You take one of the worst „old nail“ available and power it beyond all imagination with a 21st century built V-Twin that offers roughly 3-times the horsepower of the original 1.340 cc po-werplant. Then add the latest state-of-the-art Bagger parts, use available suspention and brake technology to hop-up the rolling chassis – and take the result to Germany‘s radical high speed testbed: The Autobahn. For a one year long-term test, because CCE‘s Baggers – the 2012 „Speed King“ powered by an S&S exchange set an example – are usually ridden hard and long!

N N NFor a base, you usually can‘t beat a worn-out Police bike, auctioned off cheap to the public after the end of its use-ful life – this one on the Roads of Maryland. Though one of the „smaller“ States, Maryland is still the size of Belgium and can offer rought winter climate, burning heat in summer and probably salty air from the Atlantic Ocean. Not to forget the daily routine of a Police Highway Patrol vehicle, for which the original bike was used. The 1995 FLHTP is a certified „Police Special Electra Glide“ and could be stated as „collectible“, if is would not have been in the state that Christian Denstedt auctioned it off in the USA: „It was a complete rebuilt – in the same time, or less, I could also have built a complete motor-cycle from ground up“, says Christian who on weekends and after hours, operates „Maniac Mechanix“, an quite establis-hed custom motorcycle shop for customers who have, lets say „wild“ ideas...

N N N„From the Maryland Police Department, the bike was written off not without reason“, explains Christian, who did sell some of the parts like tank halves with badges to collectors, „it was used extensively and most of the components were worn out, despite having not too many miles on the counter.“ The com-plete bike was stripped and the frame paint came off too: The powder coating would give all frame parts a fresh start into a new life as a modern-day „Bagger“ and underline the abi-lity of frame and swingarm to take the additional torque and power of the 125 RevTech motor, which would exchange for the classic 80 Evo 45° Twin. RevTech‘s biggest displacement engine, introduced in a legendary „build-off“ battle between Fred Kodlin and Marcus Walz who both received the first en-gines, has always been regarded as „something special“ in terms of power output. Since the introduction, the engine has been used in several high-end projects by various European customizers, but never used as a power source for a Bagger. It can be exchanged against any Evolution „Big Twin“ and

bolts into the stock Evolution frame – as the 88, 100, 110 and 115 versions do – and to get the stock power of 140 gallopping horses, you don‘t even need fancy fuel injection, hi-tech ignition and electronic mapping gimmicks. „I bolted on a normal Mikuni HSR 45, breathing through the new Arlen Ness „Inverted“ air cleaner and that was it“, says Christian Denstedt who assures that the RevTech interiours remained untouched, „no fancy porting, no bigger valves, no polished inlets – it works without.“ Not to be on the shy side in style, all engine components that are chrome plated in the stock version have been de-chromed and powder coated – in the same black/gold flake colour mix as the frame.

„The creation of the rolling chassis was both more time con-suming and difficult that the engine adaption“, recalls Chri-stian, „because when I started the project in November 2013, the planned front wheel a brandnew 3.75 x 26’’ RevTech „Ve-locity“ Midnight Series design wheel was yet to be machined by RevTech.“ The first snapshots of the frame and fork under custruction thus show onle the Vee-Rubber front tire sitting centered in the fork for calculating the measurements of the expected wheel. Since then, the 26-Incher has not just arri-ved, it is a beautiful and clean wheel design and – together with the „T5“ design 26-Inch wheel – has been fully TÜV-homologated already and is ready for the European Bagger

TOP: Certainly a Bagger that will catch the eye, it is the combination of the modern 125 Cubic Inch RevTech Motor in an highly upgraded 1995 „Electra Glide“ frame that is the key to success. It sets a mark that Evolu-tion bikes will have a long and successful future on the road!

market! Both wheels are „Velocity“ design, of course with fit-ting disc rotors and belt pulley, although the rear wheel is partially hidden by the Ness Bagger tailend and cases. Ano-ther target was to upgrade the rolling chassis for the availa-ble power output AND bring it to 21st standards. Anybody who has ever ridden a 1995 Electra-Glide knows what that means – both in combination are a task that still might need some re-adjustments, when „Evil King“ ultimately hits the road. „We wanted to retain most of the stock „external“ com-ponents while improving them with bolt on or bolt in modern suspention accessories“, underlines Christian. Major point: center of gravity. This has been kept low by using the Arlen

Ness 11° triple-trees in combination with 2 Inch shortened fork tubes. That compensates for the bigger wheel diameter and keeps riding characteristics within stock range. Inside stock fork legs and tubes, „Monotube“ springs by Progressive Suspension work their marvels – at the rear, two Progressive Suspension 970 shocks are mounted. „When the front wheet arrived, we had everything pretty much figured out, the only thing left to do was to drill the holes in the full metal fender, which by then had already been painted“, says Denstedt.

already existing riding stability problems of the Evo-powered Touring models. The bikes are still there to be customized – and so are the parts: Innocent, unspectacular but very ef-fective. Christian madefull use of the Paugho Swingarm Up-grade Kit, Rivera/Primo’s Swingarm Stabilizer and a Ride-Str8 Spacers that improve the stability of the rear swingarm. Adding to this is RevTech’s “Chassis Stabilizer” for FLH/FLT models from 1993-2008. “The parts to stabilze the older HD frames have been developed already and we still offer them”, smiles Denstedt, “15 years after the introduction of the Twin Cam, you only have to remember that they exist!”

MMB instruments & BSL „Evil King“ pipes

Almost a days work went into th headlight mask which was adapted from a Rick‘s Motorcycle Bagger mask. Compensa-ting the additional wheel size to have the beam of the Speaker LED headlight hitting the road where it is needed, the Rick‘s mask was adapted for the use on Arlen Ness triple-trees, a cut out extended to take the new Ness „Adjustable Handle-bar“ and further customized, placing all the neccessary in-struments – round MMB units for speed, rpm and oil pressure – on top of the hosing which offers plenty of space to host the electric components. „The other Bagger components did fit pretty well“, recalls Christian, „and I can state that the new Arlen Ness „Down ‚n‘ Out“ tailend, sidepanels and bags were pretty much a „bolt on“ job in the purest sense of the word!“ Even on a 1995 frame – no problem! Christian used a hand-ful of CCE tiny „Mono“ lights that seem much too small to be street-legal, especially in Germany – and in this configuration as combined indicators, tail- and brakelights. But fact is: They are homologated, legal, ultra bright and a superb combinati-on of design and function! Paul Yaffe’s “Bagger Nation” tank is actually design to fit the modern fuel-injected Twin Cams, but even that was an easy custom-job, performed by the “Ma-niac Mechanix” in less than an hour.

N N NThe Bagger conversion parts fitted in much less time than ex-pected, Christian went back to the power train: The expected 140 horses and the massive torque asked for reliable high end components that would live up to the task: There are few other names as prominent as Primo/Rivera, who delivered the 2-Inch wide Belt drive and the clutch assembly, bolted to the stock Evolution gearbox. Not every component of the Evolution-era is outdated: Add some new bearings and new teeth where necessary – and you have a better than new ge-arbox, delivering the power to the rear wheel. Says Christian. As RevTech „Velocity“ Midnight Series design brake rotors were somewhat „mandatory“, two Performance Machine 6-piston calipers stop the front wheel, a PM 4-piston caliper the rear. „I avoided anything that would make the bike less sta-ble on the road, especially fort he expected high-speed rides when doing this years „Bolt On and Ride“ trips“, underlines Christian, „it’s low, it has a small rear wheel, it has breaking power – it should perform quite well!“ An additional 1-Liter oil-cooler from Bert Baker, mounted under the gearbox, adds additional oil capacity for „the long run“.

N N NAll those details were worked out while the bodywork was off for the paintjob: The base paint, performed by Lackschmiede Jung, is a somewhat „special“ Ford Focus RS green, that seems to come straight from one of the “Fast and Furious”

movies. Even without the applied “Monster” paintjob, one could hardly miss the bike, especially since a mixed-in layer of gold makes it gleam in the sunshine – and there is a bit of “chameleon effect” in the base paint too. To explain the “Evil King” paintjob, would be a story of its own, but a few facts can be disclosed. Christian Christian and his wife are also into medieval re-enactment and the basic idea for the theme was her’s. The task then was given to artist Sven Stepan who christened himself “The Pinstriper from Ebbelwoiland”. Tho-se who served in the US-forces in the Rhein-Main Area – or who have visited the Frankfurt trade fairs and the countryside need no further information what “Ebbelwoi” (= Apple-Wine) is, but to describe the effect to the others, all you need to know is that a ceratin dose of Ebbelwoi turns the grumpy, grim looking inhabitants of the state of Hessen into cheering, charming and smiling friends, who all of the sudden open up (may start singing!) and get crazy ideas. Like this paintjob. Next time you fly into Rhein-Main Airport, ask for “Ebbelwoi”! For the “teeth” on the Ness Bagger tailend, their Old English Bulldog Gimli must have been involved as a model too.

N N NThe last parts to be mounted to the bike were the exhausts by BSL: Although the „Bomb“ mufflers are standard CCE pro-gram, the pipes had to be made at Linz/Austria, where the bike was shipped to marry pipes and mufflers with the huge 125 Cubic-Inch engine, that had never before been use as a “exchange motor” on the “Electra Glide”. The visit paid off and – although not in the 2014/15 catalogue, BSL „Evil King“ pipes are available now from Custom Chrome Europe. “I think we made the point”, states Christian Denstedt who put a lot of heart & sweat into the project, “Evolution Era Harley-Davidson’s are anything but outdated and can be upgraded far beyond anything thought possible at the time of their crea-tion.” Even the powerful RevTech 125 can fit into existing fra-mes and drivetrains without touching the stock configuration. A fact that will become more important, when new Emission laws will make air-cooled V-Twins with carburators more dif-ficult in a not too far future! “With all the work in this project, knowing every nut and bolt personally, I intend to ride the bike myelf as my “personal bike” after the 2014 “Bolt On and Ride” season”, says Christian, “during the creation of “Evil King”, I had already two more orders for 125 RevTech conversions – those engines are fun to ride!” As will be “Evil King”!

# 1#1 TailendRIGHT: Bag-test: With the stock Evolution motor and exhausts still in place, the Ness “Down ‘n’ Out” stret-ched Bagger tailend is a simple bolt-on job. Since the kit usually exchanges for the stock bags and fender, the stock top covers and latches are retained, which in case of the Police version was impossible. CCE offers custom style stock-fit CVO-lids, with the new latches being Arlen Ness custom latches. Holes and mounting position for taillights, license plate braket and indicators can be choosen freely or according to the countries homologation restrictions.TOP: The original 1995 FLHTP is a certified „Police Special Electra Glide“ and could be stated as „collecti-ble“, if is would not have been in the state that Christian Denstedt auctioned it off in the USA: „It was a com-plete rebuilt – in the same time, or less, I could also have built a complete motorcycle from „ground up“.CR

# 2#2 Front WheelALL IMAGES: The invisible front wheel: What do you do when you want to mount a 26-Inch front wheel that is still being machined? Maniac Mechanix know: Use what you have! The Vee-Rubber tire in combination with the full metal fender (the latter also acting in the important roll of fork stabilzer!) are fixed (not mounted or drilled!) in position to allow the alignment of frame, fork and Rick’s headlight mask. Many of the stock parts and the wiring harness still in place, it all came apart for the complete repainting of the frame after the alignment was completed.

# 3#3 Motor + TankTOP: A fact that even most customizers need to see to believe it: Despite its massive displacement boost – 80 Cubic Inches to 125 Cubic Inches IS considerable – the RevTech 125 fits the stock Evolution frames of the “Big Twin” powered Harleys! Offering a massive torque boost to 192 Nm and more than twice the horsepower than the stock engine it is a considerable improvement for any given “Evolution era” hog! There is however a price to be paid for the compact raw muscle: Due to the compacted size, in particular cylinders and heads, the stock exhaust-pipes need to be adapted or a new set of pipes be built. With a 4,250” x 4,410” bore to stroke ratio, RevTech 125 cylinders are slightly wider than stock HD cylinder heads. For some models, CCE offers fitting pipes already – as the BSL “Evil King” pipes, that now can be used for touring model adaptations – or the Biltwell “Builder Exhaust” kit that allows easy routing and assembly of your own custom-made pipes.

RIGHT: Paul Yaffee’s Bagger Nation stretched tank was adapted: Usually a “bolt-on” part for fuel injected Twin Cams, Maniac Mechanix closed the fuel-injection connections and adapted the tank for carburator operation. Fits perfectly – and the seat was handcrafted into the frame and tank anyway.

# 4#4 HeadlightIt seems odd to talk about such an “accessory” as the headlight at such an early state of the build-up, but when creating a big-wheel Bagger, things are somewhat different! With the bigger front wheel, the headlight beam direction has to be re-alingned and pointed to where it needs to be when riding at night. Especially when the headlight is to be in a fixed mounting position that can be adjusted only slightly. So when “big-wheelin” a Bagger, the headlight sometimes becomes a major part of the design calculations. Maniac Mechanix started with the Rick’s headlight housing – introduced in 2013 with the Rick’s Bagger parts line – and adapted it for use with the Arlen Ness 11° triple-trees. Since Rick’s housing is a massive and solid unit, it was extended for the Ness trees, then the tight-fit cutout for the new adjustable handlebars was made. And while cutting and moulding, the idea materialized: “why not using the available space on the mask for the instruments”? The “Speaker” LED headlight insert utilises only a fraction of the room available inside the nacelle – so three instrument holes were cut with two of them moulded in elevated rings to adjust the MMB gauge position for the unusual “in-line” position of speedo, RPM-meter and Oil Pressure. The thought behind: The tank has to come off – for service and maintenance – than the headlight. The mounting in the tank dash would mean to work on metal rather than GFK fiber and – last but not least – you can see the gauges much better!

# 5#5 SeatALL IMAGES: Before bike was taken apart completely, the seat pan was laminated „on the frame“, allowing perfect fitment. Anne Karweg of www.Wunschsitz.de, did much of the initial design and upholtering work at the Maniac Mechanix workshop at Gensingen, near the new Custom Chrome Warehouse facility. Certainly a website worth visiting, since the lady is NOT into motorcycle seats, rather all types of mild to wild fun-furni-ture with extraordinary designs. # 6#6 Frame+Engine ATOP: The first fitment of the engine took place before the frame was stripped and painted. This confirmed that there would be plenty of space to mount the 125 Cubic Incher in the Police Bike frame. It was then that the decision was made to retain and restore the stock gearbox. After the “bolt-in” test, the engine was parti-ally taken apart too, all chrome-plated parts to be painted in the same colour as the frame.

# 7#7 Wheels+BrakesALL IMAGES: For the expected 140 horses running wild in the RevTech 125, adequate stopping power is requested: Brake rotors by RevTech fit the „Velocity“ Midnight Series wheels, two Performance Machine 6-piston pods deliver stopping power to the front, one Performance Machine 4-piston caliper has been adapted (with a rigid frame adapter plate) to stop the rear wheel. Braking power is applied by Beringer’s „Aerotech“ hydraulic controls.

# 10#10 Paint AAnother important part of the custmizing process: The paintjob! Preparing a smooth surface and priming the parts is much more important and requires a skilled hand than imagined! The base paint was performed by Lackschmiede Jung (www.Lackschmiede-Jung.de) at Gau-Algesheim, which took special care for a solid white base (making the final paintjob look „brighter“) as seen on these images. The „Ford Focus RS green” does not come cheap – which might be one of the reasons it is rarely seen on Custombikes – and the better the parts are primed, the less paint is needed for the bodywork.

# 11#11 Paint BLike it or not: This paint job can hardly be missed! No matter where the bike will be parked, it will catch the eye – and questions will be asked. Mission accomplished! The task of the comic-art Zombie-like graphics was given to artist Sven Stepan who christened himself “The Pin-striper from Ebbelwoiland”. Green = Apple, that analogy works – as for the rest, it might have been inspired/fueled by the drink that is popular only in selected regions of Germany, especially those famous for apple plantations, able to produce cider in huge quantities. Those readers who served in the US-forces in the Rhein-Main Area – or who have visited the Frankfurt trade fairs and the countryside – need no further information what “Ebbelwoi” (= Apple-Wine or Cider) is, but to describe the effect to the anybody else, all you need to know is that a ceratin dose of “Äppelwoi” turns the grumpy, grim looking inhabitants of the state of Hessen into cheering, charming and smiling friends, who all of the sudden open up (may start singing!) and get crazy ideas.
