MONSTER PHONICS SYNTHETIC PHONICS TEACHING RESOURCES Is this a full, stand alone phonics teaching programme or a supplementary resource or group of resources? Please explain briefly how the product should be used in teaching.

MONSTER PHONICS is a set of supplementary resources to facilitate the teaching of grapheme-phoneme correspondence through clear and memorable visual-audio cues. This product is not a programme but a set of multi-sensory resources that will supplement any synthetic phonics programme. This set of resources is being submitted here as one supplementary product.

Monster Phonics is unique in that it uses character (monster) phoneme cues and colour coding to represent the long vowel phonemes A, E, I, O, U as well as phonemes oo, ow, silent letter and tricky letters. Each monster and corresponding colour are linked to a specific set of graphemes that makes the particular phoneme.

Monster Phonics Colour Coded Magnetic Letters

A comprehensive set of all graphemes coded for sound (including tricky letters that do not show phoneme-grapheme correspondence)

High Frequency Word Flashcards Colour and Monster Coded for all sounds o First 100 words o Next 200 words (Letters and Sounds 2007)

Monster Phonics Colour Coded Bendy Letters

EVA foam strips that can be shaped into letters. Strips are of different specified lengths so that children can create different letters to build words. The strips are colour coded so that children can create graphemes that are clearly linked to

phonemes. This facilitates segmenting and blending.

Monster Phonics Colour Coded Wordlists A unique set of phonic wordlists that can be used in combination with the Magnetic Letters and the Bendy Letters, facilitating segmenting to build words, blending phonemes to read.

These multi-sensory resources can be used to support discrete, daily phonics sessions, either with whole class teaching or with groups or individual children. The resources can be used to supplement and enhance any phonics programme. High frequency words can be taught in colour groups. pink words so go no don’t oh old

Please explain how your product meets the core criteria above. 200 words max Monster Phonics is a set of supplementary multi-sensory resources which will support any phonics scheme. This product is consistent with the basic principles behind the core criteria and as such can be used as supplementary material to contribute to the core criteria. Although the product does provide for all the teaching or materials to fully meet all criteria, the exceptions are justifiable because of the nature of the product. Monster colour coding identifies graphemes and links these to their corresponding phoneme. It is not intended to replace the reading of the graphemes with colour. Rather it identifies the grapheme-phoneme relationship within words. Monster colour coding is a unique method to support clear and explicit phonics teaching through a multisensory approach, using physical tools - magnetic letters, bendy letters, play dough (particularly for younger learners and children requiring additional support) segmenting phonemes to build words and blending phonemes to read. Writing words in the colour code further reinforces the grapheme pattern-phoneme link.

Please provide a brief explanation of what your product provides, e.g. resources, training etc

MONSTER PHONICS is a set of supplementary resources to facilitate the teaching of grapheme-phoneme correspondence through clear and memorable visual-audio cues. This product is not a programme but a set of multi-sensory resources that will supplement any existing synthetic phonics schemes. This set of resources is being submitted here as one supplementary product. The aim of the Monster colour coding is to provide simple, clear and yet very effective enjoyable memory aids and tools for learning. 1 Monster Phonics Colour Coded Magnetic Letters A comprehensive set of all graphemes, phonetically colour coded for sound (including graphemes that do not show phoneme correspondence, such as in the common exception words).

2 High Frequency Word Flashcards Colour and Monster coded for all sounds

o First 100 words

o Next 200 words (Letters and Sounds 2007)

3 Monster Phonics Colour Coded Bendy Letters EVA foam strips that can be shaped into letters. Strips are of different specified lengths so that children can create different letters to build words. The strips are colour coded so that children can create graphemes that are clearly linked to phonemes. This facilitates segmenting and blending.

4 A Monster Book of Wordlists This is a unique set of phonic wordlists that can be used in combination with the Magnetic Letters and the Bendy Letters. The wordlists only include words experienced by children in their reading and words that children most often write. Teaching the most frequent words for each grapheme promotes efficient and effective phonics

teaching. High frequency graphemes (HFGs) and rare graphemes are identified. HFG wordlists are more extensive, with fewer examples for rare graphemes. Although some rare graphemes have some high

frequency words eg though (ou), these (e-e). The higher

frequency graphemes are shown at the start of each phoneme section, and graphemes are displayed in order of decreasing frequency within a phoneme section. Those graphemes marked neither as HFG nor rare have a frequency between the two.

Assuring high quality phonic work – Detailed self-assessment form This second self assessment form gives schools and settings detailed and expanded information about this product, set against each core criterion. Name of product:

MONSTER PHONICS SYNTHETIC PHONICS TEACHING RESOURCES Please explain how your product meets the following core criteria: This product presents high quality systematic, synthetic phonic work as the prime approach to decoding print by:

Monster Phonics is a set of multisensory resources that will support existing synthetic phonics programmes. The resources use character (monster) phoneme cues and colour coding to represent each long vowel sounds, oo, ow, silent and tricky letters. Each monster and corresponding colour link to a specific set of graphemes and corresponding phoneme. Each phoneme, character and colour has a verbal/visual phoneme cue to recall grapheme-phoneme correspondence. Character-Colour -Phoneme Black Cats - black - Phonemes of the alphabet, consonant digraphs and or, ur Angry Red A - red – A phoneme graphemes Green Froggy - green - E phoneme graphemes Yellow I yellow - I phoneme graphemes Miss Oh No pink – O phoneme graphemes U-Hoo purple - U phoneme graphemes Cool Blue - blue – oo phoneme graphemes Brown Owl - brown – ow phoneme graphemes Ghosts -white - silent letters Tricky Witch - gold with wand – graphemes that do not correspond to phoneme

This product enables children to start learning phonic knowledge and skills using a systematic, synthetic programme by the age of five, with the expectation that they will be fluent readers having secured word recognition skills by the end of key stage one by:

Monster Phonics resources will support existing synthetic phonics programmes that enable children to start learning phonic knowledge and skills by the age of five. It supports the development of word recognition skills.

• Colour coding identifies:

o Open syllables (the highest frequency graphemes) a, e, i, o, u (me, apron, begin).

o Less obvious silent letters (eg e in different) o Tricky letters o Essential spelling rules (eg changing tense)

• The Monster Book of Wordlists is a complete set of phonic wordlists, complimenting any synthetic phonics programme; supporting all phases of Letters and Sounds.

• Based on research, wordlists only include age-appropriate vocabulary. Only the words used most commonly by children have been selected for each grapheme, making phonics acquisition most efficient and meaningful.

• Past tense verbs; the present participle ending ’ing’ and plurals have purposefully included in wordlists, to support recognition and use of past tense forms in reading and writing.

This product has been designed for the teaching of discrete, daily sessions progressing from simple to more complex phonic knowledge and skills and covering the major grapheme/phoneme correspondences by:

This is a supplementary resource to support a synthetic phonics teaching programme. Magnetic letters and flashcards can be used with the whole class, to demonstrate word building by segmenting and reading by blending together. These and bendy letters can be used for short whole class/group/individual word building phonics activities to reinforce multisensory phonics teaching. High Frequency Word Flashcards can be used to play phonic games eg matching, grouping, cloze procedure, movement games (finding words with a particular phoneme/grapheme), ball/hoop/bean bag games (throwing to a target word and collecting). Monster Phonics resources can be applied to existing synthetic phonics programmes, (including Letters and Sounds) starting with learning to identify, blend and segment phonemes to read and write CVC words, progressing through all phases. The wordlists encourage using grammatical spelling rules within the phases. Resources can teach complex Key Stage 2 spelling patterns.

This product enables children’s progress to be assessed by: Monster Phonics supported teaching will be assessed through the existing synthetic phonics schemes that it supplements. This product uses a multi-sensory approach so that children learn variously from simultaneous visual, auditory and kinaesthetic activities which are designed to secure essential phonic knowledge and skills by: Magnetic letters link visual graphemes with the colour coded phonemes, using the tactile sense to build words. Monsters phoneme cues also link audio-visual information

Bendy letters are Monster Phonics colour-coded EVA foam flat strips, containing a fine wire to maintain shape when bent. Highly tactile, they support the teaching of

o phonics and spelling o letter formation

Using the wordlists, colour coded play dough/clay can build 3D phonetically colour coded word models, which lie flat or stand up. Salt dough can be painted. Writing can also match wordlist colour coding. Pastels, paints, gold

pens for tricky letters or 3D paint are kinaesthetically and visually rewarding. Colour coding can be used to create signs in the environment. Monster Phonics gets the children talking and interacting with the graphemes, phonemes and words associated with each character. This product demonstrates that phonemes should be blended, in order, from left to right, ‘all through the word’ for reading by:

This is a supplementary resource to support a synthetic phonics teaching programme. Teachers can use magnetic letters to model blending from left to right, pointing to or moving each grapheme as it is being read. Bendy letters can be used in a similar way, emphasising left to right blending as a word is being decoded. Colours make phonemes units possible to see, thereby highlighting each phoneme’s position within a word. Emphasising phoneme units may support teaching that blending is from left to right.

This product demonstrates how words can be segmented into their constituent phonemes for spelling and that this is the reverse of blending phonemes to read words by:

This is a supplementary resource to support a synthetic phonics teaching programme. Modelling and as an activity for children to do themselves - magnetic letters and bendy letters can be used to build words that are then separated into phoneme units. Children can then put the units back together again to spell the word and blend the phoneme units to read the word. Putting together the segments of sound, in the correct order will support left to right segmenting of words to spell. Using magnetic letters, the reverse relationship between blending and segmenting can be clearly demonstrated. Phonemes can be highlighted by pointing to or moving magnetic letters or bendy letters.

This product ensures that children apply phonic knowledge and skills as their first approach to reading and spelling even if a word is not completely phonically regular by: This is a supplementary resource to support existing phonics programmes. Monster Phonics identifies tricky letters within high frequency words rather than labelling the whole word as a tricky non-decodable word. Tricky Witch says ’On these letters I’ve cast a spell. Now they don’t make the sounds you know so well!’ Children find the spell, then sound and blend to read the word (don’t let Tricky Witch trick you!). Children are asked to remember to follow the ‘spell’ to spell the tricky letters.

want coming Spells: want – ‘a’ is making an ‘o’ sound’’ coming – ‘o’ is making a ‘u’ sound

Phonics is still the first approach to reading and spelling because the supportive elements within words are made explicit. In fact, Monster Phonics reduces the number of tricky non-decodable words in the first 100 high frequency words from 41 to 22, largely by identifying open syllables and silent letters.

This product ensures that children are taught high frequency words that do not conform completely to grapheme/phoneme correspondence rules by:

Monster Phonics Flashcards support the teaching of high frequency words. These words are in the Wordlists and can be made using magnetic and bendy letters. Words that do not conform to grapheme/correspondence rules are identifiable as tricky letters. Sometimes but not always, tricky letters follow a pattern. If children are helped to identify tricky letters and discover patterns, irregular high frequency words become easier to read and spell. eg. c and g are soft before e, i and y (magic, princess); Silent letters also cause irregular spellings in high frequency words.

eg silent e at the end of word (have, gone) Rather than asking children to infer silent letters and tricky letters themselves, Monster Phonics makes these explicit, in flashcards and in wordlists. Children can build irregular patterns using magnetic and bendy letters. Monster Phonics also illustrates the existence of open syllables, illustrating words previously classed as tricky. This product provides fidelity to the teaching framework for the duration of the programme, to ensure that these irregular words are fully learnt by: Monster Phonics is a set of multi-sensory resources that will support any phonics programme for the duration of the programme. Monster Phonics is systematic and accurate in its identification of grapheme-phoneme correspondence through Monster cues and colour coding. This system facilitates the teaching of irregular words such as the common exception words as it highlight the part of the word that does not show grapheme-phoneme correspondence and encourages children to learn the difference between the expected sound and the actual. Monster Phonics resources support phonics teaching through all levels of progression.

This product ensures that, as pupils move through the early stages of acquiring phonics, they are invited to practise by reading texts which are entirely decodable for them, so that they experience success and learn to rely on phonemic strategies by: 150 words max Not applicable
