The purpose of this crosswalk is to compare and give basic district recommendations for some of the collaborative features within two common classroom platforms.
The Moodle Learning Management System is organized to support on-line courses and is housed on the district server. Participants can submit assignments, participate in discussion forums and collaborate on projects in a teacher-created online course. Moodle requires a district login.
MyPolkApps (Polk County's Google Apps) is a web-based service not housed on the district server. The structure is more general, and is also suited to educational uses. Google allows students/teachers to create and collaborate on websites, survey forms, calendars, spreadsheets, presentations and documents. MyPolkApps requires a district login. However, Google Apps can be set to be viewed by the world. Therefore, close attention to FERPA & the PCSB AUP is necessary.
Although Moodle LMS and Google Apps are two separate online systems, they can complement each other through the integration of both in your classroom. For example: within your Moodle class you may have students, as an assignment, create a doc in Google Apps and share with the teacher and other collaborative students. CLICK HERE to view a video example of the integration of both Moodle & Google Apps.
