CLIENT: John “Moose” Williamson

- Style Diagnostic: Vintage-Modern

- Likes clean lines, simple, stylish, vintage

- Does lots of living at home

- Likes casual and some mid-century modern elements

- Turn offs: anything ornate/elegant, decadence, complex patterns, too busy/clashy, too much going on

"You know you are drawn to modern furniture and interiors, and yet you really don't like a space that feels cold and sterile....Though the backdrop of the room, the walls and windows, are many times white or monochromatic, the furniture and accessories have the color, shape and texture to bring the warmth into the space. The great thing about Vintage Modern is ease of mixing different styles in the one space. You can have a new modular sofa mixed with a great pair of chairs that your grandmother purchased in the late 1950's and the new and old work appear as though they were destined for each other.... What's great is that even if you don't have time for swap meets and garage sales, so many of the pieces from the mid-century were so great that they have been remade and mimicked year after year.”

LIVING ROOM

TEAM: Sara K, Marisa, Erin, Tim BUDGET: $1200 “I won’t be keeping a TV in this room. I would like to use it as a gathering place for guests and a more quiet place for myself. There must be a place for the stereo and turntable, relatedly some record storage in this room would be necessary. I do see this as the most important job involved in this competition. I’m strongly leaning toward white walls. The current window treatments are just what was left here.” Musts: Sofa Seating for at least 6 Place for stereo and records. Coffee Table Lighting Rug Artwork Preferences: More intentionally selected window treatments could be a good idea  (consider coordinating with dining room) Don’ts: No TV Please hesitate to paint bookshelves.

TEAM: Paula Manni + Friends BUDGET: $800 “This should probably be thoughtfully coordinated with the style of the kitchen in some way due to the shared flooring and lack of defined separation. I’m inclined to keep the table. Painting that red at the back of the built-ins would be a must. I currently don’t have have a million dishes to fill the built-in, so consider getting creative on those shelves, I suppose. I feel comfortable with seating for four (I don’t entertain/cook much), but there is a leaf in the basement, so an option to expand to six makes sense.” Musts Paint back of built ins Seating for 4-6 Lighting Preferences: More intentionally selected window treatments could be a good idea (consider coordinating with living room) I would be inclined to keep the table (but not mandatory) Flowing well with Kitchen, somehow Probably keep the built-ins white

KITCHEN

TEAM: Paula Manni + Friends BUDGET: See “Dining Room” “I don’t cook much, but do have a larger kitchen with some more recent updates. While the countertops, white appliances, tile, and cabinets probably would not have be the choices I have made, most of those elements are fine with me. I’m not wild about the yellow walls, I’m sorry.” Musts: Lose the yellow Coordinate with Dining room to some degree Ideas: Consider more intentional window treatment selection A backsplash is a possibility If you think you can fix the exhaust fan somehow (or get a smart dad or something to), go for it. (And possibly the disposal, I don’t know what the deal is). I would hesitate to paint the cabinets because they’re newer, but maybe I need to be open. Perhaps some throw rugs for the floor

TEAM: Recent Calvin Alumni BUDGET: $600 “This is the master/my bedroom. I would like to keep a TV in here as well. I’m inclined to keep the bed where it is. I’m not wild about the wall color.” Musts: Paint Storage (Dresser) Side Table Lamp Bed Bedding Optional: Window treatment change

MASTER BEDROOM

Page 10: Moose's Move-In Makeover

TEAM: Current Calvin Students BUDGET: $600 “This is the guest bedroom. There is a bed. Um, figure something out. I do think the bed is in the right spot. There’s a broken door knob. fixing that could be great.” Musts: Bed Side Table or table(s) Comfort/Bedding Mirror Dresser Preferences: I would be inclined to keep the windows unpainted, but can be persuaded.

GUEST BEDROOM

Page 11: Moose's Move-In Makeover

TEAM: Current Calvin Students BUDGET: See “Guest Bedroom” “This had been the nursery, but I see it becoming a sort of workspace/music space/even recording space (for just podcasts maybe). Paint is essential, I can work with you. Right now it has the most stuff per square inch. Guitars and music stuff will stay in here. Possibly the desk will stay, but that could go to my bedroom if that is helpful. There is a lot of built in storage that may be used for random stuff (though largely music and project related)” Musts: Paint, let’s talk, you probably don’t have to do it yourself. Preferences: I’m inclined not to paint the built in stuff. Ideas to deaden sound make some sense. A rug, I guess. Sound absorbing stuff on the walls maybe.

RULES

CHALLENGE: To create a functional, well-designed space between November 7 and November 22. CASH PRIZE: $250 (total to team)

On November 7 (unless other arrangements have ben made), at least one member from your team must be represented at the kickoff event. At this event, you will receive a tour of the house, further instructions, and time with your mentor (more info on the next page). You will also have time to measure your space/brainstorm/etc.

Your team needs to appoint a team leader. This team leader is responsible for: •  Managing the budget •  Presenting the overall concept •  Providing leadership/direction •  Communicating with your mentor

Once your team has come up with a general concept/plan (this can be in person on November 7 or via e-mail), you must submit to Moose & your mentor.

Once you’ve touched base on the concept/plan, you will be given HALF of your budget in cash.

The other half will be given as needed via the Square Cash App. It’s free to download, and Moose will “invite” you to join. This will give both you and moose an automatic $5 to your account. All you need is a debit card.

Teams will have two weeks (and three total weekends) to hunt for furniture/décor, move things in, install stuff, and whatever else, at your leisure. Moose is willing to make the hours the house is available for work pretty flexible, more or less 9 am to 9 pm every day if needed. Please communicate with him via text or e-mail to set up. Also, if you’d like anything from IKEA for your budget, please submit to Moose by Friday, November 13. You can create a PDF “Shopping List”, save it, and send it to him via e-mail.

Painting the space is a REQUIREMENT. Moose will provide white paint, but if you’d like something outside of that, please let him/your mentor know. Another requirement is that you are touching base/making good plans with your mentor, Kelley Howley (see next page).

The competition will end at 5 pm on November 22nd with a celebration and awards ceremony. Winner is chosen by Moose & Kelley on the following criteria: Space Planning, Creativity, Impact, Use of the Budget, Quality of Work.
