PAWS AND NEEDLESBy Dr Jennifer Hutchinson BVSc. CVA (IVAS)

At ten years of age, which is around 60 in human years, Harvey the Maltese Shih Tzu, was suddenly unable to walk. He was being treated for severe bilateral hip dysplasia (arthritis) and bilateral permanent patella (kneecap) dislocation, and had also had previous spinal surgery for a ruptured disc.

Harvey presented with a sudden onset of spinal pain that meant he was unable to walk and he did not respond to additional pain relief or anti-inflammatories. After two weeks of helping Harvey to toilet and walk, the owners were devastated at the possibility of losing him, given that he was otherwise a bright and happy little dog.

In desperation the owners agreed to try acupuncture as a last resort, and after his first treatment he walked three metres! The owners were ecstatic and now Harvey is moving around better than he was before his back flared up, and he gets so excited when he comes into the clinic!

It is a story that might be familiar to people who have benefited from the ancient healing technique, but many people are not aware of the use of acupuncture in animals. I must confess that in the beginning even I was a little sceptical of what acupuncture could do for our four-footed patients, but the results speak for themselves.

Experts point out that animals have been treated with acupuncture therapy from the dawn of civilisation. According to legend, veterinary acupuncture was discovered when lame horses became sound after being hit by arrows in battle. In fact, acupuncture has been used in China for over 4000 years and has recently gained more recognition in Western Medicine as an adjunctive and alternative means of treatment.

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into specific points in the body to achieve homeostasis or balance. These points are located along meridians or channels and when stimulated can cause physiological changes in the body.

Veterinary acupuncture has proven effective in healing or easing the symptoms of arthritis, acute injuries, respiratory disorders, immune system ailments, dermatological problems, gastrointestinal and urinary disorders and a host of other problems.

A small minority of animal patients balk at the idea of having needles poked in them, but most actually enjoy their treatments, with some even falling asleep! At Ballam Park Veterinary Clinic we also offer laser acupuncture, which uses a laser beam to stimulate the acupuncture points individually, for those patients who do not tolerate needles well.

Acute cases often respond within 1-2 treatments, however for chronic conditions, such as arthritis, often 6-8 treatments are required before improvement or long-lasting effects are seen.

I think it is important to remember that while acupuncture works well on its own, it is often best used alongside Western medicine. I use a combination of traditional veterinary medicine and animal acupuncture for cases where Western medicine has failed, is not appropriate due to another condition which the animal has, or is not achieving the desired effect.

In 2010 I completed an acupuncture course and received my certification through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS), which is an American course that is recognised worldwide.

Since graduating from Toorak College in 2001, I completed my Veterinary Degree at the University of Melbourne in 2006 and have been practising on the Mornington Peninsula since then. I look forward to seeing this complimentary alternative therapy grow so that we can see more cases with fantastic responses like Harvey!

Trent was on work experience when he caught the culinary bug, and he found himself pestering the chefs to be part of their events and be given the opportunity to learn from them.

On weekends, Trent works at Eccoqui in Frankston, but during the school holidays he is involved at the RACV. This gives him a taste of being an apprentice, including catering charity events for Starlight Childrens Foundation.

However its not just at work that he gets to hang out in kitchens. Part of Trents VCE studies at Woodleigh School includes Food Technology, and his Visual Communication and Media classes contribute to his passion for cooking by giving him the skills to sketch his meals. A lot of chefs like to draw their dishes so they can plan on how to plate them, Trent explained, his favourite drawing utensil being Copic Markers.

Earlier this year Trent was part of a small group of Woodleigh students who spent hours chopping and cooking to produce around 400 meals with the Fareshare school kitchen program. Fareshare is a Melbourne based non-profit organisation that reclaims unwanted and unused food, and turns it into meals for

Trent has big dreams; a dream to study the culinary arts in Paris; to open his own patisserie, and skydive. Not necessarily in that order. Trent Richardson is a 17 year-old foodie, the passion bubbling through his veins. If anyone is going to fulfil his wildest dreams it will be Trent, because this young man has something most of us wish we had, perseverance. In fact, thats exactly how he secured his apprenticeship, which he will commence next year at the RACV City Club on Bourke Street.

A CHEF IN THE BAKINGAlexis Collier speaks with Trent Richardson who has been struck by the culinary bug

    the needy.

This isnt the first time Trent has taken an active role in the community; as a qualified lifeguard Trent spent four years protecting Mornington and Frankston beaches.

Apart from the endeavours that have ultimately helped others, such as Starlight, Fareshare and mentoring younger Woodleigh students, Trent admits that he spends his time doing things that he enjoys, and if that helps others, its simply a bonus.

Head Chef at RACV City Club, Pierrick Boyer, is Trents role model and has actively taken the budding food whiz under his wing. But having a great mentor is not the reason for the young chefs focus on food. Cooking is a great way to express yourself creatively, and it is a lot of fun.

But that doesnt mean his apprenticeship will be easy. Trents advice for young people, including those aspiring chefs is quite simple, Be persistent. Make it obvious you want to be there. Be motivated and prove to potential employers that they want you around.

Wise words, hell probably have a book deal one day, and his own line of pasta sauces.

If youre looking for that perfect once in a lifetime experience, you cant go past swimming with the beautiful wild bottlenose dolphins and fur seals in Port Phillip Bay. Starting their season on October 6, Moonraker Dolphin Swims offer a range of swimming and cruising options to suit your needs.

Sandy Mackinnon and her daughter Torie have been operating Moonraker from Sorrento Pier for the last 22 years. Their continued success can be attributed to their focus on outstanding customer service and genuine passion for Port Phillip Bay marine life. Their commitment to sustainable environmental tourism was recently recognised when they won the coveted Qantas Australian Tourism Award for Best Eco Tourism Business in Australia and also the Victorian Tourism Award for Best Eco Tourism Business.

Flagship vessel Moonraker leaves Sorrento Pier daily at 9am and 1pm for a variety of tours. A second vessel Blue Wing was added to the fleet in 2010 to offer smaller personalised tours with a strong educational focus on the marine environment.

The popular Dolphin and Seal Swim Tour will take you on a 2 or 3 hour adventure where you can swim alongside friendly fur seals and wild dolphins. All equipment is provided and the crew give full

demonstrations to those on board. Returning to Sorrento, you can enjoy delicious morning or afternoon tea while enjoying the crystal waters of our beautiful bay.

For those whod rather stay dry, the Dolphin and Seal Sightsee Cruise is an experience to remember. Observe the amazing wildlife from the comfort of the boat and return with amazing memories to share with friends.

The friendly team at Moonraker are happy to discuss your individual requirements for private, corporate, school or group tours. Why not try their two hour Fish and Chip Cruise which will take you along the coastline while enjoying local fish and chips served by the crew. Or book a tour to the South Channel Fort which was reopened for public visits twelve months ago.

With the weather getting warmer, now is the perfect time to enjoy a cruise of the bay and learn about our marine life. Get in early before the busy summer season to enjoy a breathtaking adventure that you will never forget!

DEVELOPMENT FIRES uPThe Mornington Urban Fire Brigade was formed in 1917 but it was not until 1920 that the Fire Station at the Beach end of Main Street was completed due to slow fundraising during the war. During the 70s the Fire Brigade moved to a much needed larger location and more modern premises at 328 Main Street.

From that time until March 2008, when it was relocated to Nepean Highway, Mornington, every person within cooee of Main Street would hear the siren at 11am Sunday morning, calling volunteers for fire fighting practise.

Since it was abandoned, the old Fire Station had been sitting idle for most of the time, but a father and daughter team of visionaries is about to change that.

Number 328 Main Street is set to become the newest best address on Main Street and will offer leased office space, plenty of off street car parking, and a licenced caf for dine-in or takeaway meals.

According to the local demolition company, 90% of the old building will be sent for recycling, and a spokesperson for the owners said this was an important part of assigning the project.

The new three story building was locally designed by JR Design; will be constructed by a local builder; is owned by long-time local residents, and will have local businesses as tenants.

The owners hope the caf will encourage networking and provide a much needed facility to the professional services end of Main Street.

    ERICA MCPHERSON AND PETER WHITE

you can tell a lot about someone when they dont connect with animals. Were in agreement, and Erica McPherson knows what shes talking about. She has always been a lover of animals and devoted to horses ever since she can remember. My mother was crazy about riding so it was natural for me, she continues. She was off to riding lessons by the time she was six.

Her horse training husband Peter White is the same. Born in Deniliquin to equine loving parents, its almost like he could ride before he could walk. Erica says, Peters father was a private trainer. It takes over from an early age this horse thing, she laughs - Erica and Peters granddaughter has already ridden in the Red Hill Show and came away with seven ribbons at the tender age of four.

Training is a tough profession she continues. you only make money if youve got a really good prize winner, so you have to love the challenge of working with the animal. Theres nothing glamorous about it! She rolls her eyes. With a 3.30 am start every morning bar Sundays, Peter knows the meaning of hard work. He does everything from cleaning the stalls to feeding the horses to settling their nerves on race day. It doesnt stop.

Humans have been racing for a long time. Archaeological records show that it has been going on since ancient Babylon, Syria and Egypt. It is part of the human psyche and is what this couple, who met in 1980, were destined to do. Peter had been training Tulip Town in Bowral NSW after quitting a vet science degree. He left everything behind and moved to Melbourne so we could be together and started driving taxis, but the pull of the track was too strong so he began clocking horses at Caulfield for friend Tony Vasil.

The couple were regulars at Flemington and by then they realised it was written in stone. They bought ten acres opposite the racecourse in Mornington in 2000 where Ericas son, Alex, was trainer and Peter was the stable hand, but things were about to change.

Alex met his future partner and left, so Peter took out a training licence again. Since then Lauren Mullavery who does all the track work for Peter has been a constant asset.

One of the first horses this dynamic duo bought was Escape Artist, a Redoutes Choice (pedigree) who won numerous country cups. The year after, they bought the Lion Hunter Jungle Ruler at the annual horse auction, Magic Millions on the Gold Coast and the rest, they say, is history.

Erica and Peter are part of all things racing. Three years ago after jockey Danny Brereton had a terrible fall, Erica decided to organise a fund raiser for his family. She rang Des OKeffe of the National Jockeys Trust and got together local girls Annette SanFillipo, Jackie Newman and Robyn Knobel to organise a lunch. Fields of Fashion was born.

In the last two years they have raised in excess of forty thousand dollars all of which goes to The Jockeys Trust. She also owns Fionas of Mornington with her daughter Victoria. The store stocks gorgeous race friendly designer labels like George Gross and Harry Who, and Colette by Colette Dinnigan. It also houses a vibrant range of millinery by local designer Jackie Newman.

Take a look at the shots in this edition of Mornington Life at the racecourse with king of Desire (above) another of Peter and Ericas horses and mark the September 20 down in your diary Fionas of Mornington is having an in store night featuring their milliner Jackie Newman from 7 pm onwards. Prizes, giveaways and champagne will be part of the fun!

Once involved in an equine love affair it lasts forever even through bites, kicks, and almost losing a leg. Just ask Peter. How to survive for so long in the industry and keep smiling?

Hard work, dedication and a sense of humour, says Erica. And were racing

CAT ADOPTION Each year in Victoria, over 35,000 cats and kittens are euthanized through either mistreatment, neglect or simply being dumped, abandoned or left to fend for themselves.

Peninsula Cat Rescue aims to rescue as many of these animals as possible and provide them with a second chance. Through their network of voluntary foster carers, they are able to house, nurture and integrate them into a loving and safe family environment before adopting them out to loving permanent homes.

By de-sexing, micro-chipping, worming and vaccinating all of the animals prior to adoption, and, through screening of potential adoption families and making the public aware of the responsibilities of pet ownership, their ultimate goal is to break the ever increasing cycle.

Cat breeding season is coming up and many people have put their names down with Peninsula Cat Rescue for a kitten but there are advantages to adopting an older cat as well. They are house trained, de-sexed and micro-chipped, and just waiting to be loved in their forever home.

Older cats have already settled into their personalities so you know what you are getting and they are all so different, just like people!

Please visit www.peninsulacatrescue.com.au for further information.

guinot is the number one prescriptive skin care in France. Australian Director Jonathan Pritchard and his sister Laura, have just celebrated 20 years of guinot in our country by launching a new skin care brand, Cosmecology.

After a whirlwind tour around Australia to celebrate Guinots milestone with beauty therapists and salon and spa owners, Jonathan believes Cosmecology will be a great success given the very positive response. This is just what women of all ages are looking for and we firmly believe there is a place in the market for Cosmecology, he said.

The range includes products for the face, body and hair, with natural ingredients that are pure, effective and safe. In short, they are not tested on animals, contain no genetically modified organisms and are paraben free.

Beauty expert, Laura Pritchard says, Cosmecology products are created under strict laboratory conditions, just like medical products. And testing of any substance on animals in France has been prohibited for over 20 years, which is something Im very happy about, being an animal lover.

Laura points out the Cosmecology range is very affordable with all products costing less than $30.

We wanted to deliver a quality product at a price women of all ages could afford, so the range has no outer packaging and instructions are on the containers themselves which are made from fully recyclable material.

Cosmecology offers products which suit every different skin and hair type. Face Care includes make-up removers, face creams, a skin peel and face mask. Shower Gels contain exotic ingredients like lotus, orange or hibiscus extract, and Hair Care includes shampoos to suit every hair type, coloured as well, while the conditioner is a repair treatment.

As part of this product launch Jonathan and Laura are offering Mornington Life readers a chance to win one of five Cosmecology skincare face packs containing a 50ml tube of Peel Skin, and a 50ml tube of the Hydra Skin Face Cream RRP $56.00.

Simply become a Facebook liker of Mornington Life www.facebook.com/MorningtonLifeMagazine, and write on our wall in 25 words or less why you want to win one of the Cosmecology Face Packs. Winners will be listed in the Summer edition of Mornington Life.

Once again a warm welcome to readers of Mornington Life.

As we come out of a long winter and look forward to the sunnier warmer days of spring we will be seeing some changes at the beach end of Main Street. The new streetscape will have no more power-lines and new paving will give this lovely end of Main Street a connection to the rest of the street.

Also keep an eye on the corner of the Esplanade and Main (Right outside the Museum) as we will have a new sculpture there soon. This came about from last years celebration of our township being called Mornington for 150 years.

Im not saying much more about this surprise, just keep looking. Getting a piece of public art for the township was quite a process but I believe now weve paved the way for more.

Also a big thank you to everyone who attended the Plan Peninsula meetings. For me it confirmed how passionate we all feel about our peninsula. We have great evidence of this now to present to the Government and to use in future planning processes.

Our heritage Mornington Park will be enhanced with new tree plantings including creating a beautiful avenue of honour in the next few months. Work will commence in 2013 to provide a new major playground and restore the fountain.

The new Farmers Market will also be running in November at the far end of the park.

Ive been going for many years to our local Food and Wine festival. Its always been a great day for me to catch up with friends. The committee do an amazing job and Im sure this years one, on October 21 will be full of family fun. A good one to put in the diary.

Also just wanted to congratulate our Chamber of Commerce for their successful Bay Run raising over $20,000 for Peter MacCullum to fight cancer. Well done to all who participated!

Well readers, I write this column with a tinge of sadness as, after Council elections in October there will not be a Mornington ward any more. There will be a very large ward called the Briars taking in Mt. Eliza, Mornington and Mt. Martha.

Due to a State Government decision this is happening to several wards on the Peninsula but not all. This may bring benefits but I believe it will bring some challenges too. Please take the time to get the information you need to understand the changes.

Local Government plays a vital role in our lifestyles. From libraries to footpaths, playgrounds to home help Council is the space its all happening in. Log on to the shire website - it has a lot of details available at mornpen.vic.gov.au .

Have a wonderful spring everyone and take careCheers, BevCr. Bev Colomb 0418 506 638

Passion personified would be the best way to describe actress, Harriet James, of The Actors Shed in Dromana. Do what you love and live your life truthfully, is her personal philosophy which guides her teaching. Employing the Sanford Meisner acting technique, Harriet directs her students not to act, but rather, to reveal themselves instinctively, to shed their skin. By constantly paring back, the real core moments that make for great acting are exposed. Teaching them to listen, read one another, trust their instincts and live in the now helps unfurl the heart of human interaction converting trying to act into transformational acting. you can tell when people stop acting and become engaged and connected, Harriet explains. These moments make acting an interactive experience between actor and audience.

Harriet encourages people of all walks of life, ages and levels of experience to try this technique. She sees acting as a form of fitness. Its mentally energizing keeping the brain engaged in spontaneous problem solving and memorization. Acting promotes emotional wellbeing through self-discovery giving the heart a voice and the body vital energy.

Moving from England to Rosebud as an eleven year old was in itself a transformative experience. Harriets passion for the Peninsula seeded a dream to form a new creative

community of actors, writers and directors collaborating toward a common goal. Having traveled widely, worked and studied extensively in London and Melbourne, she always wanted to return to the Peninsula. The ten years Harriet spent practicing the Meisner technique so resonated with her that she wanted to bring it home and share it, living out that childhood dream.

While currently meeting at the uniting Church Hall in Dromana, Harriet plans to build an actual Actors Shed in the future. She feels actors have a great deal to contribute to script development as they bring characters to life adding crucial insight. While in its beginning

stages, Harriets vision is taking shape. Classes are filling rapidly and shes connecting with lots of other people who share her passion.

Acting for Energy and Wellbeing, Introduction to Acting for Adults and Introduction to Acting for kids/Teens will be on offer next. New courses begin the second week of September. To book a place ring Harriet on 0487 918 015, email her at: [email protected] or visit www.facebook.com/livingtruthfully.

Squid = Snapper = SharksIsnt it amazing how the cycle starts again, with squid entering through the rip, the snapper following and of course now we have the sharks following the snapper and it all starts again! We are still waiting for the Mako Sharks to arrive in Bass Strait, however with so much snapper and squid coming through; it was only a matter of time before the sharks followed them.

On recent trips we have been getting bitten off by what is suspected to be school sharks, there is no mistaking these guys as they put up a blistering run followed by coming back to the boat and going again, very similar to the gummy shark but triple it for speed and power. Large Seven Gill Sharks have also arrived and if targeted with the right gear and in areas which have a strong current, will put up a great fight as well. Baits that have been working the best have been a whole Slimy Mackerel which can be purchased at the Victoria Market.

Squid (Portsea Pier)Its all GO as far as the squid are concerned! With good-sized numbers and quality sized ones as well, you cant go wrong fishing for these guys in southern Port Phillip Bay at the moment. Remember the rule; if the water is dirty do not use plastic jigs and go back to the bait-style jigs using Silver Whiting and Pilchard under a float. It is only a matter of time before you land a monster squid. Fishing slack water is a must down southern Port Phillip Bay, and

remember if we have a flood tide, fish the Sorrento area past Portsea Pier, and if we have an ebb tide (running out), fish on the Nepean side of Portsea Pier. The squid are very lazy and will not chase your bait when the current is running hard.

SnapperIt is still early (water temperature still down) but what I have seen on the sounder over the last few weeks indicates we are in for a very hot season as far as the Reds are concerned. Fish to three and a half kilos have been regularly caught along the shipping channel; off Portsea, off Rye, and now even Mt Martha. They are still very finicky and I suggest small live squid be used as they are fairly easy to catch, and are very effective on the snapper. The ebb tide has produced the best results and when we are having a fairly strong current remember to use extra long leaders up to two metres as this can make the difference between catching a fish or not. Also at present, come down in your hook size for a better

    hook up.

SharksOne of my favourite target species is sharks! Whether it be Gummy Sharks, School Sharks, Bronze Whalers, Seven Gills, it doesnt matter. When you hook up to one of these guys there is nothing better than feeling that thump, thump, thump on the end of your fishing rod! They

will get thicker as the water warms up in the Bay and this is when I target them the most. Most areas in the southern Port Phillip Bay hold good sharks. The key is of course berley, berley, berley. yes we all know it brings in rubbish fish but its only a matter of time before your targeted species will find your bait.

First morning seems to produce the best quality fish both in Bass Strait and Port Phillip Bay, with last light also known for its great captures.

Areas to fishSquid Portsea Pier, Queenscliff, the boat moorings at Sorrento, Rosebud Reef, the shallow waters around the Fort, the shallow waters around Mud Island, the red pole off White Cliffs, the shallow waters straight out from Rye after the shipping channel.

Snapper.... Queenscliff, the South Channel, the broken reefs around Portsea, Rosebud Reef (first and last light) Mt Martha in 17 metres, the Shark Hole at Blairgowrie (first light run out tide)

Sharks..... Any channel that drops into deeper water, Mt Martha, the deep waters straight out from Rye and Sorrento when the water warms up to 17 and upwards, the Rip, shallow waters around Mud Island (not in the marine reserve).

So as you can see there is so much to do on the Mornington Peninsula at this particular time of the year whatever you decide to target. One tip that I will give you is to continue to fish for that particular species and dont give up and decide to fish for something else, it will happen. And usually on the Mornington Peninsula when it happens it usually is a big fish. Good luck!

Paul Mercurio looked quite comfortable at the Mornington Peninsula Brewery, with the industrial stainless steel brewing paraphernalia backdrop, and a glass of the cold gold in his hand.

Although I was looking forward to meeting Paul and garnering some comments about his involvement with the Beers By The Bay festival, his bestselling cookbooks, and his substantial body of work in theatre, film and television, I did not have the one on one I had planned.

There were three other Mornington LIFE staff members, cosied up to the tall table on barstools when I arrived at the appointed hour. Word had travelled fast and I was not at all surprised. If my 91 year old mother had been able to hoist her two replaced hips up on a barstool, she would have been there as well, and it takes a lot to impress her!

Likewise one of my daughters who did not quite shriek, but raised the decibel pitch a few levels when I told her about the interview, Paul Mercurio; I love Paul Mercurio! Ditto the staff members obviously.

So the first question had to be, Does Paul Mercurio know how well regarded and popular he is? Paul said he once looked at a most recognised Aussie poll and his score was higher than he thought it would be, but he doesnt place much weight on public opinion research.

Many people still, inaccurately, believe my introduction to show biz was due to my late father, Gus Mercurio; not true. I was already dancing on a world stage, and then came Baz Luhrmanns Strictly Ballroom which had amazing success; it was just the good luck of being in the right place at the right time, and hard work.

Paul went on to explain that 20 years of classical ballet training did not prepare him for ballroom dancing. It was like learning a whole new genre with Strictly. I found it more difficult than I thought it would be, but we got there in the end.

With Strictly Ballroom being a box office smash, and a number of nominations and awards, one being a top gong at the Cannes Film Industry Awards, Pauls comment seems to be understated.

Although his father, Gus, enjoyed moderate success as a character actor in film and television, I had to ask if there was any envy for Pauls success. It was a bit like passing the baton really. Dad was proud of my achievements and I remember going to the boxing which was a sport he loved and he introduced me to boxers after the match as, This is my son, Paul. Hes a ballet dancer and a much fitter athlete than you. I was always waiting for the right hook, but it never came, luckily!

So how and when did the cooking gene kick in? Mum was an okay cook who made food and meal times a bit of a celebration. From her I learnt to see food as a cultural and personal expression and this is what forms the basis of my love for cooking and the love for cooking my daughters have developed.

Pauls mother raised three children on a pension, which could explain why his is a close-knit family. He has been married for 25 years to Andrea, who was a dancer with the The Australian

Ballet, and is very proud of his three daughters. The kitchen is the heart of Pauls home.

There is something intimate and nurturing about serving up a meal you have prepared yourself, and I love to cook. So it was a natural progression that my television series, Mercurios Menu, let viewers and fellow cooks see a side of me they had never seen before.

The series, aired on Network 7, followed Paul as he travelled to different regions of Australia to highlight the regions local produce and cuisines, and talk to local chefs along the way. Mercurios Menu ran for four seasons from 2008 to 2011 and launched a cook book by the same name.

Pauls Cooking With Beer was released last year and I happened to have a well-thumbed copy with me for him to autograph a present from one of our girls for my husband on Fathers Day.

As he says in the book, if theres liquid in a recipe, it might as well be beer! The book is stunningly presented with great food shots, easy to follow recipes and an imaginative desert section my favourite being Beera Misu. The stout adds a depth to the caramel flavour, says Paul.

By now the bar is just about bursting at the seams and we are often politely interrupted with, Gday Paul (or mate), as the locals arrive at their favourite watering hole, and its time for Paul to head home to cook dinner. Ciao simpatico.

Cooking With Beer, published by Murdoch Books, is a present that would benefit the whole family. Available at Farrells Bookshop, Mornington, and Robinsons Bookshop, Frankston.

Originally known as the home of scuba diving in Victoria, things have changed considerably in the last couple of years. With its golden sands and pristine water, Portsea is now best described as a washing machine, with large wave action and sand movement similar to that of a sandstorm. The impact on the marine environment underneath has been considerable with sand covering most of the rock formations and making life very difficult for the creatures that call this place their home.

To best illustrate this point we need to look at one of its smallest inhabitants: the Prickly Anglerfish. Very rarely seen by divers in Victoria, this small creature uses one particular rock formation (10ft x 10ft) as its permanent home underneath Portsea Pier. Before the onset of the channel deepening project, I could usually find one or two of these little guys on most dives but since the dredging I have been unable to locate one. This rock formation is nearly totally covered in sand giving this creature very few places to hide from the constant pounding of the waves. Taking this into account, it is no great surprise that this creature has moved into calmer waters but to where exactly, nobody really knows.

The Prickly Anglerfish has a short, deep body that is covered with tiny bifircate spines. The eyes are surrounded by a ring of close-set dermal spinules. The dorsal fin is comprised of four parts, a short illicium two separate skin-covered spines and a long-based soft-rayed fin that is separate from the caudal fin. Coloration of the species is variable, but may be reddish, brown, pinkish or yellowish. It grows to about 7cm in length.

The species is endemic to Australia, occurring in Tasmania, Victoria and eastern South Australia. It is a benthic species that is found on inshore rocky reefs down to depths of about 20 m. It breeds in early summer with the females attaching upto 150 eggs with fine filaments to a rocky surface. The males of this frogfish species are known to guard the eggs with their body until they hatch. They feed on small decapod crustaceans such as shrimps and small fish

You lie strapped to a bed as 800 Milliamps of electrical current pounds through your brain. The depressive numbness is slowly replaced with elation. Miraculously your suicidal brain has reprogrammed. But no one understands why! ECT, or electro convulsive therapy, is still used in intractable depression with predictable, if cloudy, results.

In Royal Hobart hospital, a new electromagnetic therapy, rTMS, uses pulsating magnets, up to 1.5 Tesla in strength, to achieve similar results in battling intractable depression. This spectacular new therapy changes the brains mood and drive. How can electromagnetism do this? Can a changing electromagnetic environment affect your everyday life?

The brains electrical nature was first measured in the 1924 by the Swiss eccentric Hans Berger with his invention of the EEG machine. your brain produces microvolt discharges of incredible complexity. The whole body is a vast electromagnetic synchronized labyrinth. Even our neuro-hormones rely on ionic connection, or electrical polarity, to function. But this steady purr can go haywire!

As we are electrical beings we must hum to the oscillating electromagnetic forces of

the Telluric currents within our earth and the magnetosphere between us, the Sun and other cosmic influences. The medical MRI demonstrates that magnetic fields can polarise every atom within the body and cause them to release energy. What other effects could a powerful magnetic field have on our very behaviour?

The brain can be sent haywire by ionic imbalance bought by seasonal weather change!

Author of The Ion Effect, Fred Soyka, recognised the effect electrically charged atmospheric positive and negative ions had on mental states. Certain areas of the world at certain times of the year caused dramatic behavioural and psychological change.

The Middle Eastern wind known as the Sharav literally sent many people bananas. Magistrates even allowed for its ability to bring on symptoms from aggression to depression. The Sharav is literally a hotbed of excess positive ions electrically affecting peoples lives. Melbournes irritable hot northerlies echo this. But this is a relatively mild departure from normality. Our Sun literally is a major determinate of our weather.

Danish physicist, Henrik Svensmark, believes cosmic rays (positive ions) are the

major driver. From coronal mass ejections (CME) to solar flares the Sun cascades our planet with chaotic electromagnetic stimulus. It is postulated these excessive dramatic electromagnetic discharges directly affect our demeanour, attitude, behaviour and sanity. The collective brain of the human race becomes overstimulated. Could it then degenerate into erratic and aggressive behaviour? Can electrical chaos send us to war?

An episode in our Aboriginal mythology supports this bizarre theory. Mungans Fire(widely held to represent an Aurora Australis gone crazy) is blamed by the tribal elders for terror and war. They despairingly lament, Mungans fire filled the whole space between the earth and the sky. Men went mad with fear, and speared each other, fathers killing their children, husbands their wives. Could wild electromagnetic activity hold the key to the madness that is war and revolution?

French archaeologist, Claude Schaeffer who studied the demise of civilizations, is famously quoted: Those great crises will explain better than before, the historical development of the most ancient civilizations and its mechanism, and they will definitely take out of the hands of man the command of the great historical happenings we thought he possessed!

With spring fast approaching its time to renew, reassess and redefine yourself for the new season. Its often with a heartfelt sigh that I face a wardrobe filled with black, grey and brown at the end of a long winter season and feel that I need to search for something new.

Sometimes, its great to consider visiting a new place to shop, rather than just hitting the same big shopping complexes or the computer. Many people often feel they cant visit a shopping strip (unless its Chapel Street or Melbourne city), because they wont get the variety and depth of offer. But this is often not the case, and certainly not the case with Sorrento.

If youve never been to Sorrento, or havent been for a while, then its time to re-discover. youll be amazed at the breadth of choice in fashion, accessories, beauty and wellness (not to mention all the fabulous eateries, galleries and unique home wares stores).

When it comes to fashion, Sorrento offers

more than just a group of retailers. Sure, it has a number of high calibre fashionable chain stores such as Mimco, Witchery, Brown Sugar, Seed, Cinori, Blue Illusions, Sportsgirl & Gazman, so theres no need to only consider city shopping centres in your search for something youve seen in a catalogue or on-line. But, there are also almost 15 fashion, surfwear and accessories stores that are either unique to the village or unique to the Mornington Peninsula.

If you want an opportunity to speak to the person who actually does the buying, who can offer advice on latest trends, who can customise an outfit to meet your needs and who can offer you something different to wear, then Sorrento is the place to go. Shopping should be an enjoyable experience, where you are treated like an individual, not just an email address or another sale.
