News: Indian billionaire Ajay Piramal wants to sell mortgages and build

affordable homes as the drugs-to-data conglomerate seeks to ride an estimated $1.3 trillion housing-investment boom.

The Aditya Birla group’s Ultratech Cement Ltd’s Rs16,189 crore acquisition of the cement business of Jaiprakash Associates Ltd is expected to be completed soon, a top group executive said in an interview. On completion, the purchase will increase UltraTech’s cement capacity by almost a third to 90.7 million tonnes per annum and give the company access to the markets of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh East, Himachal Pradesh and coastal Andhra Pradesh, where it does not have a presence.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is likely to announce within a fortnight the guidelines to operationalise non-performing assets (NPA) ordinance so as to expedite the recovery of bad loans which have crossed Rs8 trillion.

Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd on Monday said it plans to invest directly or through its subsidiaries “in high-end electric powertrain technology as part of its plan for the future of mobility; and electrification of some of its existing and future products. The investments will also be utilised towards increasing the capacity for electric powertrains and electric vehicles, it said in a notification to the National Stock Exchange on Monday. The high-end electric powertrains will be used for the group’s future line-up of electric vehicles (EV).

GST rate for financial services transactions, such as banking, mutual funds, insurance and stockbroking has been increased to 18% from 15% earlier. Tax on financial services transactions will rise from the current 15% to 18% as the goods and services tax (GST) kicks in on 1 July, making them marginally costlier. The new GST rates will apply to some banking transactions, mutual funds, insurance and stock market which were earlier taxed at 15% including Krishi Kalyan cess and Swachh Bharat cess.

The tax rates fixed by the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council will not lead to any flux in equity markets as the new indirect regime will make doing business in India easier. The council has struck a fine balance in ensuring that the rates are not inflationary. This coupled with most products and services being taxed at the existing or lower rate augers well for equity markets as well, The markets will wait for the date of implementation. Fast moving consumer goods companies are expected to be the key beneficiaries, with soaps, toothpaste and adhesives being taxed at a lower than the existing rate under GST.
