Mount Calvary Lutheran Church Messenger Volume XXVIII, Issue 1 February & March, 2016 A Beautiful Ministry and a Beautiful Opportunity “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’” Isaiah 52:17 J ane Mollman has done some beautiful ministry with us at Mount Calvary for over 17 years as Education Coordinator. 17 years ago, as a member of Mount Calvary she stepped in to temporarily fill an unexpected staff vacancy. Her service grew and changed in many ways over those 17 years; and now she has announced that she is ready to retire from this “temporary” position and return to focusing on other parts of her calling in her family and community. She will remain in her position of Education Coordinator until after Vacation Bible School this summer, after which she will continue to attend Mount Calvary with her family. Jane’s welcoming smile, understanding of children, ability to plan and organize, deep abiding faith, and sense of fun has helped to make Mount Calvary a beautiful place for children to encounter the living God. Jane’s retirement also presents Mount Calvary with a beautiful and spirit-filled opportunity—an opportunity to re-imagine the way we learn and grow in faith as a community of all ages. It’s a natural time to think and pray and wonder about how we spend Sunday morning together—how we use our time, space, and energy that might best help us grow as people of all generations following Jesus together. A team with great breadth of age and experiences will be working together over the next months to listen to people’s stories, needs and experiences, explore what creates engaging faith formation, play around with possibilities for learning, and dream what the church as a learning and growing community could look, feel, and act like. They will be conducting in depth interviews with individuals as well as hosting cottage meetings to listen and learn what is important to people of all ages at Mount Calvary on how to grow in all aspects of their faith. This will serve as a way to get ready to make a recommendation as to the particular ways all ages can learn together on Sunday mornings during the 2016-2017 program year. Mount Calvary is also in a beautiful spot to explore and experiment with this. We are not making changes or taking chances at a point of desperation or crisis, but at a time of energy and excitement. The All Always Learning team consists of 18 people with an age range of about 70 years, with everyone from 4 th graders to retirees: Morgan Becker, Emma Buddecke, Jan Dare, Cheryl Flanagan, Ben Glad, Brenda Higgins, Ellie Jex, Lisa Johnson, John Kendall, Ashley Koeller, Andy Lees, Quinten Lindsay, Phyllis Martin, Tammy McWain, Lauren Milikan, Jerry Morgan, Kelli Nelson, and Nate Reis. I think this team will do Jane and Mount Calvary proud. Feel free to share any thoughts or ask any questions of any of them or of myself. Together with the whole congregation this team will work to bring good news of new ways of growing in faith together, announcing hope to all of us, and in their ministry proclaiming that now and in the future that God reigns in our lives and through our lives in our world. A Beautiful Ministry and a Beautiful Opportunity

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’” Isaiah 52:17

J ane Mollman has done some beautiful ministry with us at Mount Calvary for over 17 years as Education Coordinator. 17 years ago, as a member of Mount Calvary she stepped in to temporarily fill an unexpected staff vacancy. Her service grew and changed in many ways over those 17 years; and now she has

announced that she is ready to retire from this “temporary” position and return to focusing on other parts of her calling in her family and community. Communion Education Class – Thursday, March 24 at 5:30 p.m.

At Mount Calvary, communion is open to all – that means people of all ages are welcome at the Lord’s Table. When Jesus said about communion, “Do this in remembrance of me,” Jesus did not say anything about having to be a certain age. Some of your children are already receiving communion and will learn more about it. Others are getting ready to receive it for the first time.

On Maundy Thursday, March 24, at 5:30 p.m. all children and their parents are invited to attend a Communion Education Class. The evening will begin with the class helping to make the communion bread to be used at the Maundy Thursday service. Next we will enjoy a family supper followed by communion instruction. The evening will end by attending the Maundy Thursday worship service with Holy Communion at 7:00 p.m., which will have a special connection to what we learned. Recommended for children age 3 and up. Sign up on the Children, Youth and Family bulletin board.

Changes in the

Nursery

Mount Calvary families value

worship together so much that an attendant in the nursery on Sunday mornings became obsolete. That is a wonderful thing for the faith development of families. The nursery is still available as a place for parents and young children to retreat if they need a quiet space during worship or church activities. The space will be changing in coming months to reflect the change in usage—from a childcare room attended by one adult to a multi-purpose family space. Look for more seating for adults and more quiet activities for young children like books, blocks, and babydolls! Please be patient with us, as this will take us a few months to complete. We are looking for more gliders—if you have one that is new/gently used that you would like to donate, please contact [email protected] and send her a picture or description.

Jacob Benda, Organist

Mount Calvary Dedication Organist

A native of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Jacob Benda holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Louisiana State University

where his major professors were Herndon Spillman, organ, Robert Peck, music theory, and Michael Gurt, piano. Prior to his appointment as Director of Music and Organist at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Jacob served as the Director of Music/Organist and Choirmaster at Grace Episcopal Church in St. Francisville, Louisiana (2008-2015), and Associate Organist at St. Alban's Chapel in Baton Rouge, LA (2005-2015). He has toured extensively in the United States including solo performances at the University of North Texas, Plymouth Congregational Church in Seattle, WA, Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, MS and the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis, MN. His playing has been broadcasted on Michael Barone’s PIPEDREAMS, and he recently co-hosted the Relevant Radio program, The Rediscover Hour, discussing the role of music in the church. During the past three years Jacob has championed the organ music of American composer/organist Clarence Mader (1904-1971), and has written extensively about his life and music. His debut recording, Music at Midnight: A Tonal Palette, is the first commercial recording to feature, exclusively, organ music by Clarence Mader; it was released in 2014 on the Centaur label. In 2014 Dr. Benda was featured as guest lecturer at the American Guild of Organists National Convention held in Boston, MA, and, as a result of his work, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Ruth and Clarence Mader Memorial Scholarship Fund. This non-profit corporation provides opportunities to musicians in fields of organ performance and organ scholarship. Jacob currently resides in Osseo with his wife Ali, and is very pleased to call Minnesota ‘home’ once again.

December Council Highlights

The Council discussed the 2016 budget. The budget was approved, seconded and passed by council as presented. Administrator NaDyne Glidden was commended for the hours of work she put into this year’s budget, especially, as many hard decisions needed to be made to balance the budget.

NaDyne presented the Marriage Policy, drafted by former Council member Kate Wegener, and approved by staff. The marriage policy was approved, seconded and passed by council as presented.

Finance update— Dave reports that things are basically on plan as we budgeted.

Staff update—

Pastor Tom will not be visiting Cameroon this year as originally intended for family reasons. Lisa Johnson reported that the Tanzania trip is also on hold due to scheduling conflicts among the group who had intended to go. Council President, Dan Sjolseth and Vice-President, Butch Raymond met with Tom for his annual review. Tom may also have a teaching opportunity in 2016.

Pastor Rome will be collecting spare change during January’s Worship Young for

benevolence to Lutheran Immigrant and Refugee Services to tie into the “Jesus is the Light of the World” story. February’s story is “Jesus the Hen,” so she is looking into some chicken-related options. Council had a lengthy discussion regarding homelessness in Eagan and the role of the church in engaging civic leaders in awareness of the importance of this issue to our congregation.

Open Discussion— The Council/Staff appreciation event typically held in December has been moved to July at the Sjolseth residence.

More Changes at Mount Calvary .........

(Continued on page 8)

D ave Beyer, our maintenance service technician, will be leaving Mount Calvary after 8 years of service. Dave has worked on many major projects including the parking lot renovation, the high cross painting,

the lower level bathroom renovations, the Retreat Room renovation, several roofing projects, many water infiltration projects, installation of a boiler and several forced air heating units, the hail storm insurance money projects (roofing and siding and new windows), and the latest flooring project at the Dakota Alano Society. In addition he has spent many hours planning and preparing for the property team monthly work nights, painting, responding to security and fire alarm calls, responding to building break ins with the Eagan Police, providing CPR training to the staff, establishing new vendors for Mount Calvary, and planning and working many spring clean ups.

Dave has done a great job of securing the integrity of our building, overseeing the property team and spring cleanups, and foreseeing what needed to be done next and knowing the steps to be taken. His hearty laugh and sense of humor through it all will be missed. Dave plans on staying with us until we can find a replacement for his position so we will be saying good bye at a later date. THANKS DAVE FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE FOR MOUNT CALVARY!

Coffee & Cookies with

the Staff Tuesday,

February 9 & March 8

10:00 - 11:00 a.m.

Please join the staff of Mount Calvary on the second Tuesday of the month from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. It gives you an excuse to get out of the house during these winter months, and is a great way for the staff to get to know members of the congregation as we talk about family, vacations, jobs, etc while we have a cookie and drink coffee and water, too! Please contact NaDyne Glidden if you would be interested in bringing treats to either gathering. There are so many of you that bake wonderful things that we thought if you would like to share, we would love to eat! The staff will leave at 11:00 a.m. for their weekly staff meeting; however, you can stay and visit with everyone else. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, February 9 & March 8 at 10:00 a.m.

Warm-Up America

part 2

The steering committee has come up with a new catch phrase for the former warm up America, it is now called “MCLC Warming you with Stitches.” Currently completed afghans are going to Global Health Ministries. In the future our goal is to distribute them to various organizations in our local area, for instance, Lincoln House and Robert Lewis House. At Christmas time, the Open Door and Holiday House will take donations of blankets/afghans. If you are aware of other organizations that are in need of blankets/afghans, contact Renate Owen or Marilyn Laage. If you have any acrylic yarn to donate please call Renate Owen. Paul had founded the Christian church in Philippi a number of years before and now writes to encourage them. Even though he is imprisoned, Paul does not seem downcast or discouraged. On the contrary, he thinks his suffering might have positive results for the gospel's contained extension in the world."

Mount Calvary Writers’ Group

Do You Have the Writing Bug? Many of us do have the writing bug, lurking somewhere beneath the surface. The Mount Calvary Writers' Group can help you breath life into your writing bug and watch it take flight in a supportive environment. We exchange writings of various kinds in various states, discuss what we like about them, make editing suggestions and talk about the writing process and life itself, since what is writing but a way of expressing our life experiences? The mix of our writing interests and experience makes our discussions rich and enormously helpful. Please join us on the first and third Mondays of the month at 7:00 pm in the adult retreat room downstairs. For more info, please contact Rich Cowles ([email protected]).

Daring Women of Faith Women’s Retreat

Saturday, February 6

8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Easter by the Lake

Do you want to grow in your relationships, your work, your faith and live more…...authentically? Do you hope to understand who God created you to be? Are crazy schedules making it hard to care for yourself and hard to connect with God? Then the winter women’s retreat on February 6th just might be what you are craving. Spend a day with us learning to say “yes” to those things that are life-giving and “no” to the things that aren’t. Using the Daring Way™, developed by best-selling author, and researcher Dr. Brené Brown, we will laugh, learn, and grow together in practicing being wholehearted, and understanding the powerful relationship between vulnerability and courage, connection, and compassion. Our time will be wrapped in learning, prayer, scripture, and growing in faith. Mount Calvary women and friends will be joining the women of Easter Lutheran and Family of Christ Lutheran for this jointly-planned retreat. If you have any questions, contact Pastor Rome at [email protected]. Register online at www.easter.org (Connect/Retreats) or call 651-452-3680. Cost for this day is $35 and includes a light breakfast, lunch, and all materials. It will take place at Easter Lutheran by the Lake in Eagan, MN from 9:00-4:45. Come and bring a friend! To understand more of Dr. Brown's philosophy see her TED talk on “The Power of…...Vulnerability”

Global Health Ministry Receives Four Star Charity Navigator

C ongratulations to Global Health Ministry (GHM) for ranking in the top 15 charities at Charity Navigator for the third year. Charity Navigator is the nation's largest and most-

utilized evaluator of charities. They examine the charity's financial health, their accountability and transparency. The ratings show givers how efficiently they believe a charity will use their support today, and how well it has sustained its programs and services over time. They examined over 8,000 charities. GHM received an impressive overall score of 95.36, financial score of 94.80, accountability and transparency score of 96. Last year Global Health Ministry shipped 9 containers to the following countries: Tanzania, Liberia, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, and Cameroon for a total of 233,872 pounds of supplies. Also 83 suitcases of supplies were delivered to these countries. Plans for 2016 include shipping 15 containers. This means there are a lot of volunteer opportunities for members of Mount Calvary. Every Tuesday several members volunteer at the Fridley warehouse. In addition, members help load containers for shipment overseas. If you are interested in volunteering at a top ranked charity, contact Judy Graff at [email protected].

Recombobulation Through Spiritual Practices

5:45-6:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room

February 17, 24, March 2, 9 and 16

O ur life is so full of distractions, noises, errands, lights, phone dings, events, lists, traffic noise, chores, things to do, people to see, places to go that we can often feel as if we are in a state of constant

discombobulation. Where can we go to get recombobulated in order to find a recombobulation that is in and with God? During the season of Lent we are supposed to be on a journey to get closer to God in someway, and somehow we are supposed to end in a different place than where we started at the beginning of the Lenten season. But how? What are we to do? Throughout the months of February and March we will be hosting talks, open to all people, on recombobulation through different spiritual practices. We will specifically be discussing contemplation, meditation, adult coloring and the labyrinth. The hope is that by the end of these five weeks we will find ourselves closer to God through this Lenten journey. Perhaps we’ve even picked up a new spiritual practice that can be used throughout the year to help us recombobulate ourselves with God (or maybe we’ve found the presence of God in something we already do). It is so important that we come together to talk about God, discuss the ways we encounter our God and work together, as the people of Christ, to try to be a little more Christ-like. I hope you can make it!

Reimagining the Easter Garden

Mount Calvary’s 2016 Rain Garden Project

E ach year during Lent, the people of Mount Calvary place flower orders for the purpose of decorating the Sanctuary on Easter Sunday. It is always a beautiful array of blooms in

remembrance of lost loved ones and in praise of the One who brings new life. This year, the leadership of Mount Calvary would like you all to imagine a different possibility for our Easter Garden.

Last spring, the church council voted to move forward in a cooperative project with the Dakota County Soil & Water Conservation District. Joe Barton, a staff member of the DCSW, presented the council with the opportunity to help mitigate the massive amounts of storm water which flows from our buildings and parking lot with a rain garden project. This project will consist of the construction of a basin near the south drive on Rahn Road. It will be a project that helps lower our congregation’s impact on the water resources in our area. It is a project which demonstrates our congregation’s deeper understanding of the stewardship of all that we have. It is also a project in which 75% of the cost of the project is paid for through state and county grants.

What can you do to help? Purchasing the plants is a foundational way for our people to help reduce the congregational cost of the project. The plants will be integrated into the design of the rain garden for the purpose of dissipating the accumulated water and to add beauty to our grounds. We are inviting the members of this community to consider making a financial gift towards the purchase of these plants. These gifts can be in lieu of the normal purchase of plants for an Easter Garden or in addition to. We will still have a smaller version of the temporary Easter Garden. However, this is an opportunity to make a gift which will bloom annually.

Gifts for the purpose of the rain garden will be accepted throughout the months of February, March, and April. The project will begin in the spring. Please consider participating and celebrating this important project as a concrete way of practicing new life – resurrected life – in the world around us.

Pastor Tom

Plant Order Form

W e will be purchasing a limited amount of flowers for the Sanctuary and the majority of the dollars will go towards the purchasing of plants for the Rain Garden. The Rain Garden will be a combination of 11

different plants that were recommended by the Dakota County Soil and Water Conservation District for their color, the time of year they bloom and their ease of maintenance.

Please help us make this Rain Garden a reality by electing to purchase plants for these two areas. The cost of the plants range from $7 to $30 each. Our goal is to collect $2300 for 220+ plants. Please leave this form and a check/cash with the Welcome Desk Attendant or the church office. For more details, check out the General bulletin board.
