Movember

Since its humble be-ginnings in Melbourne Australia, Movember has grown to become a truly global move-ment inspiring more than 1.1 Million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate, with for-mal campaigns in Aus-tralia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, Finland, the Neth-erlands, Spain, South Africa and Ireland. In addition, Movember

is aware of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas support-ing the campaign and men’s health cause across the globe, from Russia to Dubai, Hong Kong to Antarctica, Rio de Janeiro to Mumbai, and everywhere in be-tween.

No matter the coun-try or city, Movember will continue to work to change established habits and attitudes

men have about their health, to educate men about the health risks they face, getting them to act on that knowledge thereby increasing the chances of early detection, di-agnosis and effective treatment.

In 2010, nearly 119,000 Canadian Mo Bros and Mo Sistas got on board, raising $22.3 million CAD.

BeginningsLike many things having to do with the World Beard and Moustache Championships, the history of the event is shrouded in controversy. The Italian delegation claims that the first champion-

ships took place in Northern Italy in the early 1970s, but today’s affair is directly traceable to an event orga-nized in 1990 and hosted by the First Höfener Beard Club

(1. Höfener Bart-club) in its home-town Höfen/Enz, Germany, a small village in the Black Forest. In 1995, the same club hosted the second World Beard and Mous-tache Champion-ships in the nearby city of Pforzheim.

Beard Team CanadaFor the first time in history, Canada will have a team at the World Beard and Moustache Championships. Canadians appearing in An-chorage include self-appointed creator and custodian of Team Can-ada Darrell Crawford, Warren Lillie, Tim Millar, David Janzen, Kyle McNair, Ryan Day, Mitch Steinberg, and John Burns.

Team Canada even has its own “cheer trio,” made up of Heather Zel-ensky, Emily Bach, and Julie Downey, who will be driving all the way from Canada to Alaska for the fun.

American Mustache InstituteThe American Mustache Institute (AMI) is an ad-vocacy organization and registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit based in St. Louis, Missouri. When founded in 1965, by Dr. SCHNURRBART SNOR, AMI was the only organi-zation in the world work-ing towards facial hair advocacy. AMI’s full-time staff supports a more than 700 global chapters which advocate for greater ac-ceptance of mustaches in the workplace and throughout modern cul-

ture.

Efforts by AMI have in-cluded a 2007 campaign against “widespread and unacceptable discrimina-

tion in the workplace and society,” as chronicled by media including the Daily Telegraph and The Learn-ing Channel. In Decem-ber 2007, AMI lobbied the Royse City, Texas School District] on behalf of stu-dent Sebastian Pham, who had been forced by a teacher to shave his mustache, which in the opinion of Pham’s family and AMI had violated his civil liberties. Addition-ally, the New York Times cited AMI as an example of modern online com-munity building.
