Leadership starts here.
At Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health, we are tackling the most important public health challenges of the 21st century, addressing issues that impact our shared future around the corner and around the globe.
BIOSTATISTICIANS DEVELOP AND APPLY
statistical methods for health-related studies. As a Master of Science candidate in the Department of Biostatistics, you will pursue an innovative and challenging interdisciplinary curriculum, take advantage of opportunities for hands-on research experience and gain valuable exposure to cutting-edge methods. Courses are taught by faculty experts committed to mentoring the next generation of leaders in research and practice.

COLUMBIA UNIVERS ITY | MAILMAN SCHOOL OF PUBL IC HEALTH
master of science
Our MS degrees are designed for individuals
with a background in science and mathematics
and experience in health, medicine, or a related
field. Applicants seek to advance their careers or
pursue doctoral work by mastering specialized
skills within a broad, interdisciplinary perspective
on public health. Successful candidates excel in
quantitative reasoning and working with data.

CLINICAL RESEARCH METHODS
This innovative track responds to a pressing need for
advanced training in clinical research design and analysis.
It offers a new option for talented-but-novice investigators
who already have a doctoral degree in a clinical discipline
or public health field. CRM students receive formal, rigorous
training in skills that are critical to the design and analysis of
research studies involving human subjects.
30 CREDITS; FULL- OR PART-TIME, 1 TO 5 YEARS
PHARMACEUTICAL STATISTICS
Researchers seeking to advance their careers in the pharma-
ceutical industry need a rigorous statistical foundation that
considers the unique regulatory environment of the field.
This is the first MS track specifically designed to meet that
need. Under the leadership of faculty with extensive industry
experience, students master quantitative methods while
focusing on the particular demands of pharmaceutical indus-
try regulation. Students graduate versed in the challenges
and modern methods relevant to Phase I and Phase II trials—
issues not usually addressed by biostatistics MS tracks.
35 CREDITS; FULL- OR PART-TIME, 1 TO 5 YEARS
STATISTICAL GENETICS
This MS track prepares well-qualified students to use
advanced modern statistical genetic methods and cutting-
edge technologies to dissect complicated human genetics.
The high-powered curriculum keeps pace with the fast-
developing field of statistical genetics. Students begin with
a rigorous grounding in statistical theory and practice. Then
they add modern analytic methods to their toolbox via new
coursework. They are exposed to the rapidly evolving use of
BIOSTATISTICS master of science
those methods through hands-on practicum experience and
consulting work, and in journal reviews of modern methods as
presented and applied in current research literature.
36 CREDITS; FULL-TIME, MOST STUDENTS COMPLETE IN 2 YEARS
THEORY AND METHODS
The track provides comprehensive training in biostatistical
theory and techniques for individuals seeking positions as
statisticians in health-related research within a biomedical,
clinical, or laboratory setting, and for those who wish to
pursue doctoral training in biostatistics. A mathematical
emphasis gives graduates a deeper foundation in statistical
methods than the traditional Master of Public Health.
36 CREDITS; FULL-TIME, MOST STUDENTS COMPLETE IN 2 YEARS
ms in patient oriented research
Aimed at enabling young investigators to compete more
effectively for research funding, the Patient Oriented
Research degree provides training in the fundamentals
of clinical investigation. The program is comprised of a
multidisciplinary series of courses and colloquia with an
emphasis on strong quantitative training, critical thinking
skills and practical strategies for addressing the complex
challenges of clinical research.
30 CREDITS; PART-TIME, 2 YEARS
