Year 10 Music Course Outline

Subject: Music Year: 10 Qualification: GCSE Exam Board: Edexcel Course Code: 1MU0 Assessment and (Provisional) Examination / Assessment Dates Component 1 (1MU0/01): Performing Music 30% - solo and ensemble performance in April Students are required to give performances throughout the year for both solo and ensemble pieces in performance masterclasses and recitals. Each piece must be a least 1 minute in length, and a combined total time of the two pieces must be at least 4 minutes. Component 2 (1MU0/02): Composing Music 30% - two compositions to be handed in April Students must have two completed compositions to submit, one free composition from year 10 and the other to a set brief completed in year 11 Component 3 (1MU0/03): Music – Appraising 40% - Listening and written exam in May/June Students will take their final exam at the end of the year. Along with scheduled PPE exams.

Autumn Term areas of study Component 1: Performance – First solo performance Master class will take place this term. Students should prepare a piece to be performed and assessed. Component 2: Composition – Students will complete a basic theory course in the first half term. Students will then look at composition skills, how to compose? What is a melody, accompaniment? Melodic and harmonic devices. Practice of these skills using technology, Logic or Sibelius. Component 3: Listening and appraising – Placing Music into context – Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century and Popular Music. Introduction to Area of Study 1: Instrumental Music 1700-1820.

Spring Term areas of study

Component 1: Performance – Students continue to practice their solo instruments/voices. Students perform ensemble pieces for assessment. Component 2: Composition – Students begin work on a free composition in relation to an area of study. They will create ideas for homework and develop and rework them in class. Component 3: Listening and appraising – Complete Area of Study 1: Instrumental Music 1700-1820, begin Area of Study 2: Vocal Music

Summer Term areas of study Component 1: Performance – Students prepare a Solo and ensemble performance for assessment Component 2: Composition – Complete you Free composition for Hand in and assessment. Component 3: Listening and appraising – Complete Area of Study 2: Vocal Music, begin Area of Study 3: Stage and Screen Mock Examination
