Bob AltizerPresident, Board of Directors

Thank youto all of MusicaNova’s supporters who made the orchestra’s first full season in the Phoenix Central Arts District a success. We have even more for you in the year to come! What ’s the highlight of our orchestra season? World-famous Dover Quartet member Mi lena Pajaro-van de Stadt in October? A world premiere commissioned for MusicaNova and the Paradise Winds Quintet (and special guest Martin Goldsmith) in January? Or piano prodigy Katrina J ia in April? You’ l l have to be here to find out. We’ve started a new Young Artists Series in collaboration with the Arizona Piano Company, whose new recital hall débuts later this season. And our unticketed Collaborative Concerts give us total freedom to show our chops in all sorts of musical and theatrical styles. We’re busy offstage as wel l, collaborating with the Arizona Science Center on a new planetarium show for May 2015 , as charter members of the new Central Arts District; and presenting more and better collaborations with the best secondary schools in Arizona. But none of th is happens without your support. You can make a one-time donation or set up monthly contr ibutions through FirstGiving ; let the shopping you already do at Amazon .Com or Fry’s Food Stores benefit us ; give through special events l ike Arizona Gives Day or Birdies for Chari ty; or attend one of our new series of Salon Concerts, an intimate evening fundraiser in a private home. Visit our website to find out more. We promise you won’ t be disappointed.

Music DirectorWarren Cohen

Warren Cohen brings an extensive career of musical direction to Musica Nova Orchestra. Born in Montreal, he studied piano with his father, Philip Cohen, and composition privately. He worked as a pianist for Honolulu City Ballet and as a Musical Director for Theatre Productions in Honolulu. During the 1991–1992 season Cohen underto ok a program of self-study in England at Engl i sh National Opera. He returned to Hawaii in 1992, continuing his work in symphonic and concert repertoire , as well as in theatre productions. In 1996 he was appointed Music Director of the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra in Tucson, a posit ion he held unt i l 2005, when he was appointed Conductor Laureate. He became Music Director of the Fine Arts String Orchestra in Phoenix in 2001 , the Music Director of MusicaNova Orchestra in 2003, and of the Scottsdale Baroque Orchestra in 2004.

“There is no greater thrill to me than finding new music or a new composer who has something original to say. Our new music this season shows us that it is still possible to say something new nine hundred years after Perotin became the first distinctive voice in our musical tradition.”

Cohen , h i s wife, soprano Carolyn Wh i t aker, and the i r 15-year-old son, Graham, divide their t ime between Arizona and the New York area, where Warren is Art is t ic Director of the New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestras, an award winning group that was a finalist for the 2013 Eisner Prize for Intergenerational Excellence.

His inventiveness and talent have earned Cohenten ASCAP awards for or iginal composi t ion, and the 1999 ASCAP/American Symphony Orchestra League Award for Adventurous Programming. He has conducted nearly 1 , 000 works over the past twelve seasons, with scores of regional and world premieres.

MusicaNova’s twelf th season is full of new and exci t ing

programs for all our audiences and at all our venues. Our

Orchestra Concert Ser ies ’ two stunning soloists and a

virtuoso ensemble, works by MNO Composit ion Fellows,

and the world premiere of a work commiss ioned for the

orchestra. The new Young Ar t is ts Series previews the

future of great music through exceptional young performers,

and our new Col laborative Series lets members of the

MusicaNova family show the depth of their talents and

the bre adth of the i r art istry as they explore works and

interaction with all forms of the v isual and performing arts.

“Our concerts this season reflect, in every case, a movement from darkness to light... the Elgar Concerto is an elegy to a vanished life, and the Tchaikovsky Suite expresses the hope of a new world in the musical expression of an oppressed people; the fact that we can play the gorgeous Schreker Chamber Symphony at all is a triumph of talent over oppression; and the despair of the Sibelius Symphony dissolves into the glorious festivity of the Capriccio Espagnole.”

Landrum: Gaslight MusicaNova Composition Fellow Nicholas Landrum

Elgar: Cello Concerto Transcribed for Viola by Lionel Tertis Milena Pajaro van de Stadt, viola

Tchaikovsky: Orchestral Suite No.2

A member of the internationally famed Dover Quartet, Milena currently lives in Philadelphia where she studied at the Curtis Institute of Music. She was drawn to the viola by its “lower, darker, more human sounds,” and fell in love with it when she began playing in a string quartet as a high school junior. Milena won First Prize in the 2010 Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition. A soloist with the Tokyo Philharmonic and Jacksonville Symphony, she has performed throughout North America and Europe, including an acclaimed 2011 debut recital at London’s Wigmore Hall. With the Dover Quartet she won the Gold Medal and Grand Prize in the 2010 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition.

“Nicholas Landrum is a young award winning composer whose “Gaslight” is an

evocative and br i l l iant ly orchestrated score that uses a wonderful range of colors

and sounds. Elgar ’s Viola Concerto is an arrangement by Lionel Tertis of Elgar ’s

iconic Cello Concerto. The composer agreed to conduct the f i rst performance of

th is arrangement, which gives a new perspective on a fami l iar work. Tchaikovsky’s

Second Orchestral Sui te is perhaps the closest Tchaikovsky came to the Russian

nationalism of Rimsky-Korsakov and the other members of the Mighty Handful .

I t might be the composer ’s most cheerful and light-hearted large work .”
