    EA Technology is delighted to have led the My Electric Avenueproject. The results mean that we now have a much betterunderstanding o how the local electricity network is likelyto cope as sales o plug-in vehicles continue to rise. In areaswhere there may be capacity challenges, we also have asolution that can help minimise the need to upgrade somenetworks and this translates to some huge cost savings thatyou will see in this report.

    So the headline outcomes rom My Electric Avenue areimpressive. However the actual journey down My ElectricAvenue has also been very interesting.

    When we irst presented the idea or My Electric Avenue including the need to recruit 100 neighbours to drive anelectric car or 18 months as part o the trial many peoplebelieved that it could not be done. But the project did indeed

    ind 100 people who were interested to trial an electric carand associated new technology to control their charging. Inact many thousands o people expressed interest in takingpart via our website.

    A huge thank you needs to go to the cluster champions, whoplayed a key role in leading the recruitment o the groupso neighbours who took part. Their enthusiasm about theconcept o an electric avenue, which they passed on to thepeople they helped to recruit, helped to ensure the projectwas such a success.

    Finally, I would like to thank all the project partners. Theyare listed elsewhere in this brochure, and all the partnersthat were there at the start o the project were also there atthe end. Without such an effective team, My Electric Avenuewould not have been able to present the learning outcomescontained in this report.

    We now understand more about the ability o local electricitynetworks to cope with charging clusters o electric cars atpeak times, but that doesnt mean that our work is done.We now know that there is an issue, and EA Technology willcontinue to work with industry the energy industry and theautomotive industry to ensure we can charge the ever-growing numbers o plug-in cars and also keep our lights on.

    RESULTS

    My Electric Avenue has been working with specially createdclusters o neighbours around the country who have all beendriving Nissan LEAF electric cars or 18 months. This has beencarried out to mimic a uture scenario where many people inan area choose to use a pure electric vehicle or plug-in hybridelectric vehicle (PHEV).

    The project has been led by EA Technology, a trusted thirdparty innovation technology deliverer, with project partnersScottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution Limited(SSEPD) (the lead Distribution Network Operator, or DNO),Nissan (EV supplier), Fleetdrive Electric (EV rental programmemanagement), Zero Carbon Futures (charging point networkdeveloper) and Northern Powergrid (participating DNO).In addition there are two academic partners, the Universityo Manchester (providing network modelling support),

    and De Montort University (providing socio-economicsupport). Ricardo has been providing independent technicalveriication to the project.

    The project set out to look or ten electric avenues groupsor clusters, with ten people or more where each personwould drive an electric car or 18 months to trial a newtechnology, Esprit, which would monitor and control theelectricity used when their car was being charged.

    The Esprit system is designed to avoid any potentialpower outages and damage to network inrastructure bytemporarily curtailing high load devices to reduce the overallload on a single eeder or transormer.

    Over 100 people in different clusters around Britain weresuccessully recruited to My Electric Avenues Technical Trials.A urther 100 people were recruited to the projects SocialTrials; they also drove Nissan LEAF electric cars, but theydidnt need to be in a cluster and they didnt have the Esprittechnology itted.

    The project aimed to provide essential learning aboutmanaging the strain on the distribution network rom theanticipated increased uptake o EVs, and to deliver a cost-effective solution to DNOs to reduce the need or networkreinorcement and allow a aster uptake o EVs.

    Technical innovation: The irst trial using technologywhich monitors and controls the demand on the localelectricity network as a result o the charging o EVs,communicating rom an individuals house or commercialpremises to an electricity substation.

    MANAGED BY A PRIVATE COMPANY

    Commercial innovation: This is the irst time a privatecompany, EA Technology, rather than an electricitycompany (i.e. a Distribution Network Operator or DNO)has led and managed an Ogem Low Carbon NetworksFund project. It has created a blueprint or how DNOs andthird parties can work together in this way in the uture.

    The results o the projects modelling has shown that acrossBritain 32% o low voltage (LV) eeders (312,000 circuits) willrequire intervention when 40% 70% o customers have EVs,based on 3.5 kW (16 amp) charging.

    Susceptible networks are typically characterised by availablecapacity o less than 1.5 kW per customer.

    My Electric Avenue has analysed the various kinds o lowvoltage networks in the UK and our types are expectedto experience issues due to the uptake o EVs at differingpenetration levels.

    Traditionally, these indings would mean the replacement ounderground cables in the street, however My Electric Avenuehas been trialling a lower cost solution to this in the orm o

    Esprit.

    It is worth noting that new EVs can charge at a rate (7kW) thatis double that o the My Electric Avenue EVs (3.5kW), withcharging rates and battery capacities continuing to increaseurther; more work is needed to understand what this meansor local electricity networks.

    MY ELECTRIC AVENUE HAS BEEN

    TRIALLING A NEW TECHNOLOGY

    CALLED ESPRIT AN INTELLIGENT

    CONTROL BOX, I.E. THE HARDWARE

    THAT IS ABLE TO CONTROL CHARGING

    TO TEST IF THIS COULD HELP TO

    MANAGE THE LOAD ON THE LOCAL

    ELECTRICITY NETWORK AT TIMES OF

    STRESS.

    The Esprit system employs demand side managementtechniques to protect power networks rom potentialoverload that might be caused by the simultaneousrecharging o numerous EVs on the same substation eeder.It does so by instigating temporary curtailment o rechargingon a rolling basis (typically, in this trial, or 15 minutes each)across the local cluster o EVs.

    The project showed that this technology was successul incurtailing charging when necessary, and thereore Esprit hasthe potential to be a solution or DNOs to prevent roads beingdug up and new higher capacity cables installed. By 2050 wethink this will give an economic saving o around 2.2 billion.

    Any project that is attempting to do something new that

    hasnt been done beore is almost guaranteed to experiencechallenges. One such challenge or My Electric Avenue wasthe prototype version o Esprit. Issues were experienced withboth the Mark 1 and Mark 2 versions, however by the endo the project sufficient curtailing o EV charging took placein all clusters and enough data had been recorded to providemeaningul results, and to prove the capabilities o the EspritTechnology.

    Esprit also helps DNOs maintain network voltages. Largeloads like EVs can affect the system voltage, Esprit typicallyallows an additional 10% o customers to connect EVsbeore this occurs. Esprit can also help make networks moreefficient; by shifing demand away rom peak times Espritreduces the losses in eeders by about 9%.

    WHAT WAS LEARNT FROM THE

    WORKPLACE CLUSTERS?

    My Electric Avenue primarily trialled Esprit with households,however there were also workplace charging clusters.The use o Esprit on the business network was enabled byartiicially reducing the control threshold to a point slightlyabove the eeders normal load, excluding the chargingpoints.

    HAS THE TRIAL RESULTED IN ANY

    WIDER LEARNING ABOUT THE

    ELECTRICITY NETWORK AND LOW

    CARBON TECHNOLOGIES?

    Participants became more aware o the electricity networkand increased their understanding o it through pre-trialinvolvement with the project. Participants also became

    more aware o low carbon technologies and increased theirunderstanding o them throughout the trial. This increasewas primarily attributed to the actual experience o using anEV and charging points. However, project communicationsduring the course o the trial, contact with the project teamand the cluster champion, and the recruitment process allalso played an important role. Participants also reportedthat their use o an EV helped to educate people in the widercommunity as the EV provoked conversations with amily,riends and beyond.

Analysis o this data indicatesat the use o the technology did not cause signiicantconvenience or unacceptable loss o ser vice to EV users,th the majority declaring themselves comortable or verymortable with Esprit being able to curtail their charging.

    WHAT WAS LEARNT ABOUT

    THE OFGEM BID AND PROJECT

    MANAGEMENT PROCESS?

    The Low Carbon Networks Fund is an excellent mechanism odelivering innovation or the electricity networks and Ogemshould be commended or its establishment.

    The bid and project management processes beneited romthe (relatively quickly orged) strong working relationshipsbetween all o the project partners, and the tenacity o the

    core project team to keep the project ocused on the agreeddelivery schedule.

    The business community will beneit rom the wealth olearning derived rom an SME having successully managedand delivered such a major and groundbreaking project itpaves the way or other SMEs to enter into similar contractswith the advantage o that learning.

    Learning rom the bid process rom the perspective o athird party lead was provided to Ogem to aid reinement outure bid processes. Recommended improvements rom thecontractual arrangement have also been developed to assistwith uture collaborative working between a DNO and a thirdparty SME.

    INDEPENDENT PROJECT REVIEWS

    SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR FUTURE

    INNOVATION PROJECTS

    The independent project review undertaken by Ricardowas highly valued by the project partners, as observationsand recommendations by an unbiased source can identiyareas where change is genuinely required. It can also offeran impartial, holistic view o a project such as My ElectricAvenue, with stakeholders ranging rom an industry regulator

    to an SME. For these beneits, it is strongly recommendedthat such an approach be considered or uture innovationprojects where the size and scope is sufficient to justiy theextra expenditure.

    OTHER LEARNING FROM THE PROJECT

    ESPRIT TECHNOLOGY WASSUCCESSFUL IN CURTAILINGCHARGING WHEN NECESSARY,AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TOPREVENT ROADS BEING DUG UPAND NEW HIGHER CAPACITYCABLES INSTALLED.

    When we embarked on the My Electric Avenuemission o recruiting participants onto thetechnical trials it seemed like an impossible task toachieve.     THE FUTURE

    My Electric Avenue has also shown that the issue oinsufficient capacity can be managed by Esprit technology.However, action needs to be taken soon.

    The project has highlighted the act that communicationtakes place within the energy industry, and within theautomotive industry, but little communication takes placebetween the two, and that is exactly what needs to happento successully address the issue o lack o capacity in somelocal electricity networks or electric vehicle charging.

    Thereore as a legacy project, EA Technology will beacilitating cross-industry dialogue in the orm o anAutomotive-Utilities Working Group to ensure that thelessons learnt rom My Electric Avenue are transormed intoaction: raising awareness o the issues and solutions, andexploring collaborative working opportunities.     Avenues trials compared to their diesel-engined equivalents.*In addition, some participants installed solar panels duringthe course o the trial, a decision that was in part, inluencedby the project, so urthering the uptake o low carbontechnology.
