In Woodgrove Primary School, students are empowered to be actively involved in school activities through varied approaches. One key approach is the promotion of student voice and agency - such student empowerment lends to greater student engagement, growth in competence and responsibility for their own learning. The school structures encourage feedback and student participation. In class, students are encouraged to ask questions, to actively share their ideas and listen to other perspectives. Students reflect on their learning in journals and classwork, and grow through feedback by their peers and teachers. Each class has a class committee of student leaders who look into addressing class concerns and being responsible for the class, be it the crafting of class rules, the design of class motto or maintaining class cleanliness. Care Time, a common time for the Form Teachers to meet their students, enables students to speak informally to their classmates and their teachers, and give feedback on class matters. At each level, the Student Development Team conducts regular discussions with students on school matters to involve students in surfacing concerns so that together, all are involved in school improvement efforts. Level programmes and structures such as inter-class competitions, learning journeys and Care Time help build strong rapport between Form Teachers and students. 1 WOODGROVE PRIMARY SCHOOL MySchool,MyVoice: MyClassIdentity Actively sharing in class Leadership training in action MAY 2019 Helping one another grow Valuing each other’s opinions

Class Motto Winners 2019

Class 2BI simply love Class 2B! We have been together since Primary One. Everyone understands one another. We respect and care for each other.

Our dynamic teachers make our lessons interesting and fun. I love my Form Teacher Ms Natalie Kang as she shows us a lot of kindness. She always encourages us to try our best and be people who can do great things.

Our class spent a few days discussing our class motto. We created this design because everyone in class is special and important.

Our class motto has an extra message. We need to give opportunities to everybody in class so that everyone can excel in his or her own special way. We need to always respect and value each other. We should strive to be confident and do our best in everything.

This class motto represents us as it comes from Class 2B!

Written by: Low Si En, 2B

Class 1EI like that our Class 1E is united. Everyone is friendly to one another. I like our 1E family because we look after each other. Each of us decorated a letter of the alphabet to form our class motto. We are the only class that has this design as every class is different.

We like to display values such as respect and teamwork in class because we can do many things together. We learn to listen to one another. We are kind to each other. We also have fun learning and playing together.

This is our class and we are 1 Enormous Family!

Class 4DIn Class 4D, we work together to achieve our goals. We chose the design of the galaxy after our class voted for it.

As the theme for Primary Four focuses on teamwork, we brainstormed and came up with this motto: ‘Together, we reach for the stars.’ We like the analogy that the solar system is formed by many planets of different sizes and shapes. Likewise, even though we are all very different and have varied talents, we can work together as a class to achieve our goals!

This motto design is special to our class because we put in effort and made it ourselves. We worked as a team! Some drew the planets, funny aliens and UFOs, while others coloured, cut and pasted the pieces together to form this beautiful motto.

It took us about three days to complete putting everything together. We are very proud of it. Whenever we look at our class motto, it motivates us to do our best.

For 2019, as a class, we want to continue to show respect to our teachers and classmates. We will continue to be responsible in handing in work on time. We will also be punctual for school and care for our classroom.

We all like our class as we care for each other and we can overcome our problems confidently. We chose an ocean design because we all feel that it is motivational. Our class motto is: ‘We may all be different but in 3D, we swim together.’

It is special to us because we took a lot of effort and time to decorate and paste it on the class noticeboard. We took about an hour to decorate this class motto. You could hear the stapler gun going “Bang! Bung! Bong!” on the board. We hope that everyone who comes into our classroom will be inspired and do their best.

After creating the motto, we all started to show responsibility, respect and many more school values. We love our class. Even though we are different in many ways, we do not quarrel. We enjoy helping and teaching each other.

We are like one big happy family. The teachers take care of us wholeheartedly. We also try to make this class the best in Primary Three. We are very proud to have won the Best Class Motto award. It was such a pleasant surprise for all of us. We believe that if we strive harder, our seniors will be inspired too. This is our story and we hope that it will inspire others. Never give up!

Class 6EOur class motto is: ‘Doing your best is better than being the best.’ This motto means what we should do our best in all that we do. This motto is related to our class as we always strive to do our best in our studies. We like this motto as it encourages us to do our best, instead of focusing only on being number one.

This motto encourages us to display diligence and drive. It also helps us to develop an excellence mindset.

We brainstormed for a day before deciding on this motto. It took us about half an hour to work on the decorations, calligraphy, and emojis. We chose to use emojis to describe our feelings as they represent how we strive to do our best.

Class 5FThere are many things that we like about the class. Our classmates are always willing to learn and help those in need. We chose this design because we strive to keep trying and never give up. We believe that we can achieve our goals by believing in ourselves. Our parents always tell us not to give up when we fail. Our teachers always advise us to believe in ourselves and think positively.

Our design is colourful. We have added some decorative designs around the words. There are pictures too. We like our design because it is special. We decorated the class by writing the values and class motto on coloured papers. We hope to be good role models to others. We can do so by working together and doing our best.

The value we want to display in class is resilience. We want to face our challenges, be strong and never give up.

Values Collage Winners 2019

Class 1FMy classmates are caring and co-operative. We also perform our tasks well. As all the values are important to us, we decided to display them. We chose this design as it looks like a crossword puzzle. It is like us. We have just entered primary school and we sometimes feel a little puzzled since everything is new.

By coming together, we work things out. We do our best in our daily routines in school through the shared school values.

We took about three Care Time periods to decorate the class. My class was very happy that we won the Values Collage Award. We also thanked our Form Teachers for helping us to brainstorm this design.

Class 2GOur school values are Staunch, Stable, Steadfast and Successful. They are important to us.

• Staunch: respectful and responsible• Stable: resilience and resourcefulness• Steadfast: diligence and drive• Successful: excellence mindset and effective communicator

For Class 2G, showing respect means being kind to others. For example, we must greet the teacher “good morning” and “goodbye”. We should also say “Thank you”. Being responsible means doing all that we are expected to do in class. For example, we hand in our homework on time.

Being resilient means that we are able to cope with problems. When faced with problems and stress in school or at work, we do not give up. We will try our best. Resourcefulness means being able to find solutions to problems. For example, when we do not know how to do an English Language question, we will ask our teachers to guide us.

Diligence is about working hard and doing our tasks carefully. When our teacher gives us an activity to do, we must do it well. We also need the drive and determination to achieve our goals. We should grow in our abilities.

In order for us to be effective communicators, we should listen, speak and write well. For example, we have “Show and Tell” and “Reading Aloud” in school.

These values guide us to be good students. We should have an excellent mindset and strive to do our best. We aim to put in effort in all areas of learning.

Values Collage Winners 2019

Class 3COur class, 3C, designed a values collage. Each of us wrote a value on a piece of coloured paper that our teachers had given us. We used the word cards to form the shape of a tree. It is very colourful and interesting. All the values pasted on the wall are important to us.

We started working on the collage from the first week of school. It took us about two periods to colour the words and add some designs on the board. Mr Quek, our Form Teacher, helped us to put it up.

The tree represents the class. It represents our growth as a class as we become better students. The values also remind us to be kind, responsible, caring and helpful to others. Our teachers also use the values collage to teach us about the different values. We hope that we will become better students as we learn these important values.

Class 4BWe have a class values wall at the back of our class. With the help and guidance from our teachers, we took about one hour to decorate it. We managed to complete designing the values collage because everyone worked well together.

We chose this design because it is beautiful. It also represents the unity of our class. The design is different from other classes. It is special because we came up with the design ourselves.

Our teachers divided us into groups. The groups were given different tasks to work on. When everyone had done their part, we put the pieces together.

I think it is interesting that we have all the values written and pasted at the back of our class. It reminds us to be better students. Whenever we have an issue in class, we will look at our values. We will try to be understanding towards each other. We understand the importance of the values.

Class 5AWe like our class because we are very obedient and well-behaved. We chose this design as we love to play and work hard. We like this design as it is really attractive and it is based on our school values. We have good teamwork too.

In order to design this collage, our teacher gave us different roles and groups. Each group took charge of a different design and idea. It took us one hour to complete the designs. I am proud of everyone.

We chose the values “responsibility” and “resilience” as part of our collage as we as a class wish to display these traits. We do not give up when we face challenges.

I am also thankful to have been given this opportunity to be a representative for my class. I hope we can display all these values and motto in 2019.

Class 6AWhat we like about our class is the teamwork that we display when we work together. We always have fun together. We had fun decorating the class. We chose this design so that we could express ourselves in creative ways. We wrote our school values on different coloured papers making the design very colourful.

This design is special to this class because we used our creativity and put in a lot of effort. We decorated the kites that our teacher gave us. We also decorated the vanguard sheets by writing down the school values.

We took two days to discuss our class motto and two days to put up all the class decorations. We want to display the following values in class: respect, kindness and responsibility. Our class will behave properly and nicely to our teachers and friends.

Welcome to the Woodgrove Family!

Ms Sangeetha ArumugamAs a new teacher in Woodgrove Primary School, I am drawn to the positivity and warmth from the colleagues in the school. It is always exciting to get to know new colleagues and discuss how we can help our students as it gives me a sense of belonging to the school. The staff here are always forthcoming and willing to render help whenever I need assistance with any issues. The students are very polite and show respect to the teachers by cheerfully greeting them with a “Good Morning”.

As a teacher passionate about the teaching of Social Studies, I am always keen to educate the young minds to be inquisitive and ask more questions about the founding of Singapore, our forefathers and factors which have led to the success of Singapore—an independent nation with a strong economy. It is important for students to have a sense of national pride and belonging to the nation. As such, I will find ways to make the lessons engaging and meaningful in order for the students to be intrigued and to continually desire to learn more.

I am definitely looking forward to having an enriching working and learning experience in Woodgrove Primary School.

Mdm Koh ShiniI am Mdm Koh Shini, a Chinese Language teacher. I have always wanted to be a teacher since young. I joined the teaching fraternity in 2008. This year, I am very glad to be part of the Woodgrove family.

The word “grove” reminds me of trees that produce flowers and fruits. It truly reflects the beliefs that I have as a teacher. I believe that education is about guiding the young seedlings so that they will grow up to become different “plants” and “trees”—each with their unique goals in life. Each child can learn and achieve in his or her own way. Each child can grow up to become capable individuals who can contribute to the betterment of society.

As the Subject Head for Information and Communication Technology (ICT), I believe that students should leverage on ICT in class. I will also be looking into the Cyber Wellness education in school. I have started working with teachers to guide Cyber Wellness champs to become positive role models to their peers and contribute to the school. I am also looking into various library programmes in Woodgrove to ensure that the library is a place for students to learn joyfully and explore. The library should also be a source of inspiration for students.

All in all, I look forward to working with the teachers and parents, to guide, to care, and to inspire the young ones in this rewarding journey of education.
