CREATE STRAIGHT LINES WITH THE LINE TOOL

Click and drag with the Line tool to create straight lines Press the Shift key when dragging to constrain angle of line to 45º increments


CREATE A RECTANGULAR TEXT FRAME WITH THE TYPE TOOL

Click and drag with the Type tool tocreate rectangular text frames

Press the Shift key when draggingto create a square frame


CREATE A RECTANGULAR GRAPHICS FRAME

Click and drag with the RectangleFrame tool to create a rectangulargraphics frame Press the Shift key when dragging

to create a square frame

Graphics frames serve asplaceholders for imported graphics

Click and hold on the RectangleFrame tool in the Tools panel todisplay two other tools: The Ellipse Frame tool creates

elliptical and circular graphicsframes

The Polygon Frame tool createspolygonal graphics frames


CREATE AN UNASSIGNED RECTANGULAR FRAME

Click and drag with theRectangle tool to create anunassigned rectangular frame Press the Shift key when

dragging to create a squareframe

Unassigned frames are oftenused as graphic elements byadding a stroke and/or fill

Convert an unassigned frameinto a graphics frame or textframe by choosing Object >Content > Graphic or Object >Content > Text (the frame mustfirst be selected)


CREATE AN UNASSIGNED ELLIPTICAL FRAME

Click and drag with the Ellipse toolto create an unassigned ellipticalframe Press the Shift key when dragging

to create a circular frame


CREATE A POLYGONAL UNASSIGNED FRAME

Click and drag with the Polygon tool tocreate an unassigned polygonal frame Press the Shift key when dragging to

create an unassigned polygonal framewith equal sides and angles

Double-click the Polygon tool tospecify the number of sides and a starinset


SELECT AN OBJECT

Click an object with the Selection toolto select it

If an unassigned frame has no fill,you must click on its edge to select it

Click on an empty portion of the pageor pasteboard to deselect objects


SELECT MULTIPLE OBJECTS

Shift-click or click and draga rectangle with theSelection tool to selectmultiple objects

Choose Edit > Select All orCtrl+A/Command+A toselect all objects


MOVE OBJECTS

Drag a selected object to move it

Press the Shift key when draggingto constrain movement tohorizontal, vertical, and 45º angles

If an unassigned frame has no fill,you must click and drag its edgeor center point to move it

An object’s X and Y coordinatesare displayed as you drag


RESIZE OBJECTS

Click and drag any of an object’s eight resizing handles to resize it Press Ctrl+Shift (Windows) or Command+Shift (Mac) while dragging to proportionally

scale the object and its content (text or graphic) Object’s width and height are displayed as you drag Scaling and resizing an object are not the same


ADD A STROKE TO AN OBJECT

Before you apply a stroke, click the Stroke box in theTools or Swatches panel

Use the Stroke panel to specify stroke width, stroke type,and other settings

Use the Swatches panel to change the color of the stroke

Basic stroke controls (width, style, and color) are alsoavailable in the Control panel


ADD A FILL TO AN OBJECT

Click the Fill box in the Tools or Swatches panel Select a color from the Swatches panel


CHANGE THE TINT OF STROKE AND FILL

The Tint field in the Swatches panel lets you change thetint of strokes and fills Make sure the correct box — Fill or Stroke — is selected

before you change a tint value


TRANSFORM OBJECTS (SCALE, ROTATE, SHEAR, AND FLIP)

Scale: Hold down Ctrl+Shift(Windows) or Command+Shift(Mac) and drag a corner handle Content (text or graphic) is also

scaled You can also scale objects

using the Scale tool, the Scalefield in the Control panel, andthe Transform panel

Rotate: Move the pointer outsideany of the four corner handlesuntil the rotation arrows aredisplayed, and then drag You can also double-click the

Rotate tool, use the Rotate fieldin the Control panel orTransform panel, or chooseObject > Transform > Rotate torotate objects

Shear (slant): Use the Shearcontrols in the Control panel orthe Transform panel, or use theShear tool

Flip: Click the Flip Horizontal orFlip Vertical button in the Controlpanel You can also choose Object >

Transform > Flip Horizontal/FlipVertical or use the context menu


CHANGING THE STACKING ORDER OF OBJECTS

Each time you create an object,it’s placed above/in front of otherobjects on the page

Arrange commands (Object menu)let you change the position of anobject in the stacking order Bring Forward and Send Backward

move the object one level in thestacking order

Bring to Front and Send to Backmove the object to the top/bottom ofthe stacking order


MANAGE OBJECTS USING LAYERS

You can use layers to organizeobjects on a page. For example,you can create a layer for textframes and a layer for graphicsframes. Create a new layer bychoosing New Layer from theLayers panel menu

To place selected objects on adifferent layer, click the blue squarein the Layers panel and drag it tothe target layer


SHOW/HIDE, LOCK/UNLOCK LAYERS

Show/Hide box in Layers panelcontrols layer visibility

Lock/Unlock box determines ifobjects on layer can beselected/modified


CHANGE THE SHAPE OF OBJECTS

Use the Convert Shapecontrols in the Pathfinderpanel to change an object’sshape Convert Shape commands

are also available in theObject menu (Object >Convert Shape)


CREATE COMPLEX OBJECT SHAPES

Use the Pathfinder controls in the Pathfinder panel to create complex shapes


ALIGN OBJECTS

When you create or drag an object,Smart Guides are automaticallydisplayed to help you align objectedges and centers with margin andcolumn guides, other objects, andthe horizontal and vertical centers ofthe page


ALIGN OBJECTS (CONTINUED)

Object edges automatically snap tomargin and column guides when youcreate or drag an object

The Align panel lets you align multipleobjects

Top edges of these objects are aligned


CREATE COPIES OF OBJECTS

To create a copy of an object, press Alt/Option while dragging Add the Shift key to constrain movement to 45º angles Other options for creating copies:

Edit > Copy Edit > Paste Edit > Duplicate

Edit > Step and Repeat to create multiple copies


CREATE GROUPS OF OBJECTS

Choose Object > Group to combine multiple objects into a group

Choose Object > Ungroup to ungroup a group
