ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: The Pelicans are back in action for the rst time since Saturday, when they beatFrederick for the third straight game, 8-5. The Birds and Keys were rained out at BB&T Coastal Field on Sunday beforethe All-Star Break that gave them three more days off Monday-Wednesday.
VS. THE NATIONALS: Despite an 11-game lead in the standings, the Pelicans have merely split the ten gamesso far in the season series. The P-Nats took two out of three at home last week to even the series 5-5. After split-ting a four-game set in Myrtle Beach April 25-28, the Birds took two of three at G. Richard Ptzner Stadium May 2-4.That series was highlighted by the Pelicans 20-6 victory on May 3. The P-Nats took the 2010 series 14-6. The Birdswent 4-6 at home and really struggled in Woodbridge, going 2-8 at Potomac. It was their worst single-season recordagainst the Nationals and only Salem (15-5) had a better mark against the Birds last year. Myrtle Beach is 119-128 inthe all-time series, their .482 winning percentage is their second-worst against any other Carolina League opponent.
- TODAYS PITCHING PROBABLES -BOSCAN: Righty Wilfredo Boscan is coming off his nest start as a Pelican. In the opening game of a huge seriesagainst Frederick, Boscan shut down the Keys with seven strong innings of one-run ball. In scattering seven hits, heoutpitched Bobby Bundy for the second time this season. In addition to the Keys ace, Boscan has outdueled Wilming-tons Jake Odorizzi and Kinstons Drew Pomeranz, lowering his ERA from 6.75 to 3.86. He draws another ace tonightwith a third start opposite Bundy. Signed by the Rangers as a free agent out of his native Venezuela in 2006, Boscanhas pitched at ve different levels in the Texas system including a stint in Double-A Frisco to start the season.
OLBRYCHOWSKI: This righty makes his second straight start after his rst 16 outings for Potomac were out of
the bullpen. He made a spot start in the second game of a twinbill last Tuesday against the Pelicans and took the loss.In four innings he allowed two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out ve. In ve games against the Pelicansthis year, Adam is 0-2 and has allowed 11 runs in eight and one-third innings (11.88 ERA). Olbrychowski was selectedby the New York Yankees in the fth round of the 2007 draft out of Pepperdine. After four years in their farm systemand getting as high as Double-A Trenton, Adam was dealt to the Nationals on February 2, 2011 for OF Justin Maxwell.
DONT BE SO MODEST-O: The Pelicans had four players take part in the California-Carolina League All-StarGame at John Thurman Field in Modesto, CA on Tuesday. Joe Wieland started for the Carolina Leaguers and pitcheda dominant six-pitch 1-2-3 inning. That outing was capped by a strikeout of Jedd Gyorko, who took home Top Starhonors for the Cal League. Robbie Ross, with his catcher Zach Zaneski behind the plate, tossed a 1-2-3 seventh withtwo strikeouts. Ryan Strausborger started and played the entire game in center eld and went 1-for-4. Zach Zaneskientered in the sixth for starting backstop Dan Butler of Salem. He went 0-for-2 and caught the rest of the game. ThePelicans efforts were not enough as the California League beat the Carolina League 6-1.
WHAT A HALF!: The Pelicans nished the seasons rst half one half-game behind the Frederick Keys for thebest overall record in the Carolina League this season at 40-29. The Birds have scored the most runs in the Carolina
League (312) and allowed the fewest (246), giving them the best run differential in the circuit by far (+66). The offensealso leads the league in on base percentage and is second in batting average. The pitching staff leads the loop in ERAwith a 3.14 mark. They have racked up the most strikeouts and allowed the fewest home runs. The staff nished thehalf at second in the league in opponent batting average and walks per nine innings. The team defense has excelledas well, making only 60 errors in 69 games, tied with the Kinston Indians for the fewest errors in the league
FIRST-HALF LEADERS: Several Pelicans led the Carolina League in a statistical category in the rst half. RyanStrausborger leads the loop with 84 hits and is tied for the most triples with seven. Joe Wieland paces all CarolinaLeague hurlers in strikeouts (96), WHIP (0.96), walks per nine innings (0.32) and baserunners per nine innings (8.72).Robbie Ross is tied atop the league in wins with seven and Santiago Chirino is the hardest player in the circuit to strikeout, whifng only once every 12.06 plate appearances.
