MYRTLEFORD SHOW IS ONLY 8 WEEKS AWAY — Saturday 22nd October 2016. Last year we successfully ran a colouring competition for the “young” ones. Over 200 entries came from schools
in the Alpine Shire and Whorouly. This year it is the “oldies” turn.
What you colour is your choice, but it must be A4 in size and taken from one of the many colouring books on sale around Myrtleford.
The competition will close 2 weeks before the show. SO START COLOURING NOW.
We will again be holding a scarecrow competition and these will be displayed down in the animal nursery area.
START CREATING ONE NOW.
This years show will feature a Pet Show which is going to be bigger and better! Pet Owners - have you any ideas as to how we can achieve this?
More classes and more prizes has been one suggestion. Who keeps a snail as a pet?
It has been suggested we could run a snail race and award the Myrtleford Snail Cup! The Pet Show is usually held early on show day. Entries are taken from 9.30, entries are free, and judging begins at 10 o’clock. Jillian Wilcox is in charge of the Pet Show and she would love to hear from anyone who would like to be a Pet Show steward.
RAYMOND THE SNAKE BUSTER Come and see Raymond the snakebuster, a snake man with a difference. Raymond’s snakes have been defanged and are used to being handled. You will be able to touch a snake or hold a snake and learn what to do if you meet a snake at home, in the street or in the bush. Remember, the snake is more frightened of you than you are of the snake. Raymond takes his snakes to festivals and childrens birthday parties. There will be a FReeZA Music Event. A small committee of young people are organising for a popular band to play at the Show, supported by local musicians. The event will be free for everyone attending the show. FReeZA is a state government funded program to deliver drug, alcohol and tobacco free events for young people. Being involved in organising FReeZa events is a great way for young people to influence the events which are being held for them. Calling local young creative types!
Council has received an invitation from the Office of the Governor of Victoria to provide a decorative ornament to
be displayed on the Government House Christmas tree this year.
The opportunity is available for local young people (aged 12 - 21) to submit a concept design.
The designer of the winning concept will work with Council and a local artistan to bring the design to life. They will also have the opportunity to attend the opening of the Christmas tree at Government House in Melbourne later in the year.
The concept must be for a high quality decoration which can withstand weather, is representative of the area and is no more than 10cm x 10cm in size. Please include sketches of your concept, along with a rationale for how it represents the Alpine Shire and the materials for construction. Entries close on September 30 2016 and may be emailed, posted or dropped in to Council’s Bright Offices att: Development Officer (Community & Youth) Jenny Corser email: [email protected].

Myrtleford volunteer drivers needed The Ovens Valley Specialist Medical Transport
Service provides transport to residents of the
Ovens Valley, to access specialist medical
appointments outside the Alpine Shire, using
volunteer drivers.
Since the launch of the transport service in May 2012, the demand has grow steadily and is becoming invaluable for the residents enabling access to vital medical treatments outside the shire. The service has two vehicles one based at each Alpine Health campus in Bright and Myrtleford respectfully. Currently the service is in need of more volunteer drivers for Myrtleford, if you would like to become a volunteer driver please contact:

HIGH COUNTRY MUSIC Mountaingrass at Harrietville, November 18-20 For 28 years, Harrietville in the foothills of the Victorian alps has echoed to the high-lonesome sound of bluegrass and old-time music. If you like country, you’ll be stunned at the power of all-acoustic bluegrass. Its songs tell the same stories of love lost and won, faith and despair and life beyond the cities. Mountaingrass is sweet songs, turbo-charged bluegrass and jamming into the night. Think campfires, comfy lodges, country pubs and the song of the Ovens River flowing through the little town. Think walks and cycle trails on mountain paths. MountainGrass owns Harrietville for three days of concerts, workshops and music in every venue in town. These guys are known for jamming till all hours and are some of the finest picker & singers you'll come across in the High Country.
THE PAST AND THE PRESENT Dates: 18-20 November 2016 Harrietville, Vic, 3741 For over 27 years the small township of Harrietville has played host every year to bluegrass and old-time music festivals. The first bluegrass and traditional country music festival was held in October 1989. It was organised by a group of musicians including Nick and Janet Dear, Rod and Judy Jones, Philomena Carroll and Laurie Grundy. With help from other dedicated volunteers the festival grew into the peak event on the bluegrass and old time music calendar in Australia and came to be known simply as ‘Harrietville'. The first Mountaingrass was held in November of 2013 and is now organised by the Australasian Bluegrass and Old Time Music Association Inc. (ABOTMA Inc.) Mountaingrass continues the tradition of bringing U.S. Bluegrass and Old-Time acts to play concerts and run workshops for fans and players of all levels. Mountaingrass also showcases a selection of acts from
Australia and New Zealand and runs instrument and
other workshops for players of all levels. Most of all,
Mountaingrass offers two and a half days of non-stop
picking and jamming and lots of opportunities to
improve your chops!

Our very first market and our very first theme! The first month of Spring envigorates with its warmth and burst of colour and movement as plants, trees and crops emerge from their winter hibernation along with the pollinating insects, signifying a period of renewal and the start of the growing
period. It’s always an uplifting time and a time of great expectation for everyone, but growers in particular as they consider the
forthcoming season and its crops. It’s a time of low harvest and therefore a great opportunity to dig into our cupboard of stores to prepare lighter meals enjoyed
outdoors. Our area has some established nut growers producing walnuts, chestnuts and hazelnuts amongst others. The grand trees that
produce these sweet and healthy treats dot the Snow Road between Myrtleford and Porepunkah and provide a great farm gate stop for travellers.
This month, we’ll be looking at some of the delicious nuts, oils and flours from the region and using them to cook some simple and tasty Spring dishes .

What used to require extensive travel and weeks of pouring over dusty archives can now be accomplished with just the click of a few buttons!
TRAVELLERS AID This free service provides a friendly space to have a cuppa, heat your lunch and they can even provide personal care and meal assistance. There is also wheelchair and scooter recharge and hire
facilities, as well as an accessible toilet.
Travellers Aid is located at King George V Memorial Gardens, corner of Templeton and Ovens Street, Wangaratta. (Just opposite the new Target Centre)

A picnic shelter will be built at Myrtleford’s Cundy Park by the end of the year. The $50,000 project includes paving, replacement of the existing barbecue and relocation under shelter as well as installation of picnic table, water tap and security lighting.
The shelter has been made possible by an $18,125 grant from the Federal Government, $18,875 from Council and $13,000 from the Cundy Park Steering Committee. Of the $13,000 raised by the committee, $5,000 was from the Into Our Hands Community Fund, $5,000 from Alpine Rally Group, $1,000 from the Myrtleford Lions Club and $2,000 from private donations and fundraising.
Council staff met with members of the committee this morning to establish a suitable site for the shelter. This is a great example of what can be achieved by the community, Council and Government working together for a common cause, with the double benefit of improving facilities for those who already enjoy the park and attracting new users, as well as making the space a little more flexible in wet weather.
The Federal Government funding has been provided under Round Two of the Federal Government Stronger Communities Programme.

Ovens Valley Specialist Medical Transport Service The Specialist Medical Transport Service provides volunteer transport to the residents of the Ovens Valley from Harrietville to Everton, to specialist medical appointments which are located outside of the Alpine Shire. WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Any person from the Ovens Valley, who is unable to access public transport, taxis or private transport and who is experiencing transport disadvantage due to economic, geographic or disability status (including temporary disability). COST
The service relies on clients donations to assist with the day to day running costs. You will be advised by the coordinator of the requested amount when you make your booking.

JUSTICE of the PEACE SIGNING CENTRE A Justice of the Peace Signing Centre operates at Myrtleford Library every Tuesday afternoon from 1.00pm until 3.00 pm. This free community service has rostered JPs available to witness certified true copies, affidavits, statutory declarations and power of attorney documents. No need to book, just turn up. This is a free service supported by the Department of Justice and the Royal Victorian Association of Honorary Justices.
