President’s Message

Welcome to the 14th Biennial WFTO Conference.Every two years, the global Fair Trade sector comes together at the WFTO Conference, the world’s largest and most significant Fair Trade gathering, to discuss and deliberate issues of the day. The Conference is a unique opportunity to share experiences, innovations and knowledge about Fair Trade and also to take part in the WFTO General Meeting, and visit side-events of the World Fair Trade Week (WFTW) like Fair Trade Fair, Fair Trade Fashion Show and Fair Cooking. India is a country where Fair Trade has a long tradition with hundreds of organisations of craftspeople and small farmers involved in the production of Fair Trade products. This is a good reason to come to India and we are glad to have organised this event jointly with Fair Trade Forum India. I would like to thank FTF India for the fruitful cooperation to prepare this Conference.

The 14th WFTO Global Fair Trade Conference attracts international attention and offers a global platform for exchange. It benefits a number of different Fair Trade stakeholders, including the local and global Fair Trade movements, craftspeople, farmers, governments, international development agencies, policy-makers, academics and Fair Trade Organisations from all over the world.

Markets are changing rapidly and Fair Trade has to look at these changes pro-actively. Therefore we have chosen ‘Fair Trade Responses to a Changing Market Environment’ as one of the main themes of the conference. But Fair Trade also continues to be an important development tool and therefore ‘Trading Your Way to Sustainable Development’ is another important theme of this conference. At our EGM, which will follow the conference, WFTO will take some decisions which I consider to be milestones for the future of Fair Trade.

Welcome. I wish all participants a fruitful and successful conference.

Warm greetings,

Message From the WFTO President
