    INTRODUCTIONA prcis is a summary of a plece fo writing.

    It is also called epltomisation. A prcis may bedefined as an unchanged restatement inshortened from of the main points of ides of awritten text. There is no fixed rule about the

    length of a prcis but normally. It shouldcontain one- third of the number of words inthe original passage.

    The word prcis is derived from French

    word and it means terse or exact. It ispronounced pray-see. The final letter s issilent in pronunciation.

    Effective prcis writing means, but just writing indifferent words what the original contains. It is notmerely paraphrasing of the original passage nor a listof its main pints. Once the subject matter is clearly

    understood then unity and coherence of thoughtprocess is required. The skill of organization of ides,logical sequencing of points, clear and meaningfulexpression, use of language suitable to the situation areessential for writing prcis effectively. The writer ofprcis must be able to identify the essential ideas in agiven passage and separate them from nonessentialidea. But as the same time a prcis is not a creativewriting, inasmuch a s it merely a condensedrestatement of the original writers ideas, points, etc.

    A prcis writer is not a critic. He is not anenthusiastic reader reading for pleasure. Precis

    does not contains any comments andexplanation by the prcis writer. The ability to

    PRINCIPLES OF AGOOD PRECIS

    The important requirements of make a goodprcis are: a clear understanding of the givenpassage, ability and distinguish between theessential and non-essential points of the givenpassage and identification of main points and

    sub points. Precis writer has to concentrate onthe process of selection and elimination of whatis important and what is not, and how best thereelected ideas can be rearranged and expressedin a concise way. Let us now discuss the essentialqualities of prcis writing. These arecompleteness, conciseness, clarity and unity andcoherence.

    should be presented coherently and in a logical

    sequence. When read the prcis should appear like an

    original piece of writing and should be intelligible.
