An Arizona �sh farm with its large, concrete lined pond had become a major tourist attraction for �shing a�cionados and those who simply wanted a great family outing. More than 255,000 Arizona anglers send an estimated $831.5 million on equipment and trip-related expenditures annually.
ProblemThe concrete pond had aged to the point where innumerable cracks and holes were causing it to leak 150 gallons of water a minute. Not surprisingly, the damage was general, over the whole concrete base. But that left two other problems.
Conventional epoxies will �ll holes but they remain rigid, making them prone to micro cracks once under strain of a heavy loading of water and the temperature changes between summer and winter, particularly on exposed rims. The third problem was the need for a remedy that was totally non-toxic and not just in the short term.
SolutionEcodur is rated for use in contact with potable water. The ANSI/NSF 61 rating designation for the product came after stringent testing. Of course, if it is good enough for humans, it is certainly good enough for delicate �sh hatchlings and juveniles.
Ecodur is made from two natural products, gypsum and castor oil. When combined with a catalyst, the ingredients form an incredibly durable 'veggie plastic' that is very �exible, non-toxic and has no Volatile Organic Compounds.
Furthermore, Ecodur can be re-applied to previous coats over an inde�nite period and form a 100% bond, making repairs not only easier but far more e�ective than conventional coatings. It has been tested in saltwater for nearly a quarter of a century without any measurable degradation.
Ecodur is sprayable on vertical services and has excellent low-temperature performance which was important in this relatively high altitude location. In this case, some of the product was foamed to permanently seal the holes and cracks. Once the anomalies were dealt with, a spray of 40 mm thickness completed the protection.
Application ResultsColorado Lining International carried out the work within 48 hours of completing the preparation of the surfaces by power washing. This is an exceptionally short turnaround for coated concrete and is primarily facilitated by Ecodur's short cure time. Typically it is touch dry within 30 minutes even in very cold weather, so �nishing touches are not delayed.
