Narrative Essay

Differences of the City

Bao Loc is a small town where I was born and grew up; it is located at the South of my

country, Viet Nam. When I was living there, it had both somewhat fun and boring. The

countryside has its own advantages that it is really quiet, spacious, and pure, however, there is no

place for entertainment, and the schools system is too small. Therefore, many people moved to

the city, Sai Gon, to take advantage of what the town was missing. My family was among the

people who chose the conveniences of the city.

When I lived in the countryside, I had some friends there; we have been friends for ten

years, and I lost touch with them after a few years moving to the big city. It is not the biggest but

the main city at the South of my country. At the time when I still lived in the country, we used to

have fun by going to the lake behind my house, racing the bike, or catching lizards. However,

those fun days were sometimes too short for me; Sometimes, I had to stay at home for a whole

day looking at the raining sky, and wished this was the city where there were plenty of

amusement parks, leisure centers. People can walk around the neighborhood to look at the tall

buildings like giant diamonds with ton of lights as we saw in the televisions. The day will come

soon which I could never thought it was real.

My parents had a sign to sell the house for years before someone was interested in it; I

and my sisters always thought that who would like to live at the small town since the city is more

fun than any other places. Nonetheless, seniors are the one that want to leave the city life to live

in the countryside the most; they love the silence of it, the spaciousness, and the pure air which

can only be experienced in the countryside. On the other hand, my parents always told us that we

need to move to the city before we go to college. They wanted us to be able to get in the big

college with advanced equipment, the best teachers, and students who care about learning.

Moreover, my parents usually said that our town was small and people went to the fields all day,

and the local schools just required students to have average grades; therefore, almost everyone

often thinks that graduating high school was enough. Furthermore, many people have come back

from the city and opened their own companies, which was big at that time. Besides that, some of

my friends had already moved to the city before me.

Choosing a school in the city was harder than I thought; most schools required grades to

be over the average and I had never paid attention to since going to school. My parents had to go

to several places to find me a school so I could attend on time. It did not mean that my grades

were low but those schools all said the same thing; the grades for students who come from towns

were always required to be higher than those who study at schools in the city. Moreover, once

getting in school, I had to take another test to find a class that fits me. Almost every school in the

city has their students learning ahead time; they teach the students information that was a grade

ahead. Each class will have different levels, which depends on the ability of students on that

class. Therefore, teachers will have variety of ways to communicate their knowledge to students,

and usually students who graduated from classes with higher level will have better grades than

the others. So, I tried to get the highest scores so I could get in the best class of that school.

However, I was only able to get in the number three class, which was still good for me.

Study hard, play hard is a thing that I used to hear from people in the city. There are

plenty of places to go. Sitting in the office all day, all most everyone wants to enjoy the pure air,

the peace and quiet in the shade of trees on a hot day. People can go to garden coffee with

bamboos and coconuts trees are planted around would make them felt like sitting somewhere in

the countryside. If people want to have a fun day, they could go to amusement parks, leisure

centers, shopping center, or the museums with tons of subjects to see. There are crowded,

animated, and lots of fun with swimming pool, hunting games, car racing, circus, clothes and

shoes with the newest fashion for people who like shopping; or they can learn about history of

thousands years ago, ethnic groups in the country at the museums.

However, the city is somewhat inconvenient. Imagine what would happen if someone

steps on a line of ants, and that was what the traffic was in the morning at the city; people try to

find their ways to get to schools or work. I would be late for school if I did not wake up at five in

the morning, even though my class started at eight, and it only took me ten minute to bike there.

When I still lived in the town, I would bike to school like people doing yoga in the morning, but

I had to race if I wanted to get to school on time at the city. Another thing was that houses in the

city are cramped. They follow each other without a space while in the old town, people had to

walk around to visit the neighbors. The city had no free space to play unless we had to pay for a

club to get a space to play soccer or anything needing a big place to play. Moreover, more and

more people move to the city put up the price of rent, foods, schools’ and hospitals’ fee, which

decreased in the quality of life of people who lived there.

Living in the countryside had its own advantages such as the environment, the space, and

the silence. However, moving to the city has given me the advantages of the location, places for

entertainment, and the quality of education. Besides that, it also has problem about the traffic, the

air, and the noisiness.
