SECTION A: DRAMA

QUESTION 1

NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH

1.1.1. A public library is meant to be used by the general public and has always been a free service to the community √ and is not meant for profit where patrons must pay for the service √ (2)

1.1.2 The lady in charge of the library/ Sipho’s supervisor. √ (1)

2.2 THE SOFT VOICE OF THE SERPENT 2.2.1

2.2.2 Locusts are pests hey destroy crops. √ The farmer would be happy the locust was kept busy elsewhere.√ (2) 2.2.3 A. / man and the locust √ (1) 2.2.4

a) His mood changes from happiness to√ irritation√ . He was joking at√ first but later becomes nasty/ angry. He was happy but√ once the locust flew off he became unhappy. √ACCEPT ANY OF THE ABO√VE OR ANY OTHER RELEVENT RESPONSE PROVIDED. (2)

b) He realises that the locust is able to fly√. The locust is able to move but he can’t. Although the locust lost a leg just like he has, the locust could fly away but he is still stuck in the wheelchair. √ Accept any ONE of the above or any other relevant response. (1)

2.2.5 The serpent refers to the locust√. It refers to the temptation in the Garden of Eden. √ (2) It refers to the temptation that there is hope in end, false hope for the man Everything can be fixed in the end √ ACCEPT ANY TWO OF THE ABOVE OR ANY OTHER RELEVENT RESPONSE.

2.2.6 At first she is afraid √of the locust and then she feels sorry √

for the locust. She feels sorry√ for the locust and then becomes afraid of the

SECTION C: POETRY

QUESTION 3 3.1 AN ABANDONED BUNDLE 3.1.1. Early morning/ dawn/ day break/ sunrise √

3.1.8. Open – ended, accept a well substantiated response e.g.: Yes. The mother has literally ‘abandoned’ her baby by throwing it on the rubbish dump. To her the baby was just a ‘bundle’ to be thrown away. OR

No. The baby has not just been ‘abandoned’ but thrown away. One should not refer to a living baby as a ‘bundle’. The word ‘bundle’ hides the gravity of the offence committed by the mother. √√ (2)

3.2.1. The children came from poor/√ lower class/ unsophisticated backgrounds where the level of education is not high . The children are not disciplined or taught manners ,and are√ left to do as they please . √ (3)

It is greater than the fear he would experience if he has to face tigers. (2)

Their background doesn’t allow them to associate with him. The rich people usually undermine the poor. any answer relating to the relationship between the boy and the other

children . 3.2.5. He is only one and they are many. √/He is not as strong as they are. /√ He may have been taught by his parents to turn the other cheek. /√

He is friendly. /He is afraid, cowardly, forgiving. /He wants to be their friend. (ANY TWO) (2)

3.2.6 They are overprotective√ parents who do not allow their children to interact with the greater community. √ Parents from the middle class√ who will not allow their children to interact

with the poor. √ Parents who discriminate√ other children on the basis of social background. √ (2)

3.2.7 Open – ended. Accept a well – substantiated response e.g. √√ (2) They did not want to accept him into their world/ be friends with him as they came from different classes. He was a subject of their abuse and constant ridicule. The distance created by social class and environment did not allow them to associate with them. They wanted to keep it that way. [18]
