The National Tourism Award is a recognition of outstanding achievements of the tourism industry stakeholders.

This annual awards function inculcates a spirit of healthy competition in the industry to strive for excellence.

This year we are remembering our colleagues in the industry fraternity who lost their lives in the line of duty during

November 26, 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, especially the employees of the Taj Mahal Hotel, The Oberoi

and The Trident. In recognition of their sacrifice and demonstration of exemplary courage, we are instituting

"Atithi Devo Bhava – Pride of India" award from this year onwards.

The emerging sectors of tourism such as Cruise, Responsible, Accessible Tourism and Golf are becoming

increasingly popular. In order to unleash their potential, Ministry of Tourism is promoting these sectors and,

further, has instituted awards in these categories.

I extend my heartiest congratulations to all the award winners and thank the travel industry for its support and

commitment to the growth of tourism in our country.

The National Tourism Awards of the Ministry of Tourism have been instituted with an objective to recognize the

outstanding work done by individuals, State Governments, the hospitality and Travel trade in different fields of

Tourism.

Tourism is an activity that touches the lives of one and all and has been recognized for its potential for generating

high levels of direct and indirect employment. It is therefore necessary that tourism as an industry be encouraged

and given prominence. The industry is facing a downturn in the wake of the global economic slow down as the key

markets have been affected. However during these times we need to turn the crisis into an opportunity and come

together in a strong spirit of partnership. I am sure the Visit India 2009 programme launched recently will go a

long way in achieving our common objectives of promoting India as a leading destination.

I congratulate the winners of the National Tourism Awards 2007-08. I am hopeful that this will motivate the

industry to strive for excellence in times to come as well.

The National Tourism Awards are primarily meant for giving recognition to individuals, corporate organizations

and institutions in their respective segments. Each award winner has set the benchmark for quality in service,

commitment to growth and dedication towards promoting India as a top global tourist destination.

The winner of each award has been selected for meeting the highest standards expected of them by the tourism and

travel industry.

Inspite of the recent global meltdown and terrorist attacks, it is time to renew our pledge to constantly strive

towards maintaining high standards of service in Indian hospitality sector so that visitors go back with memorable

experiences of our destinations. This has assumed greater importance today as the tourist is traveling with multiple

objectives of seeking new and wholesome experiences.

My heartiest congratulations to the winners and best wishes to the entire industry for keeping the flag of

Incredible India flying high.

The magic of vibrant Rajasthan - its rich heritage, colourful culture, exciting desert safaris, shining sand-dunes,

amazing variety of lush forests and varied wildlife - makes it a destination unparalleled. Rajasthan is often portrayed

as one vast open-air museum, with its relics so well preserved that it delights even the most skeptical traveller.

It is an incredible destination for the outdoor-tourist – take a safari on horses, camels, elephants or even in jeeps,

with the Aravalis - India's oldest mountain range as the backdrop. Rajasthan has something for everyone – one just

has to choose an activity appropriate to one's temperament.

Major tourist places and monuments have been spruced up or renovated. Forts like Amber, Kumbhalgarh and

Chittaurgarh have been beautified and light & sound shows mounted there.

The State Government of Arunachal Pradesh has taken several initiatives towards augmentation of tourism

infrastructure in the State. Recently, regular helicopter services have been introduced between Guwahati and

Tawang and plans for establishment of airport at Itanagar and Pasighat and launching of several new schemes

including rail and road connectivity are seen as major initiatives in the field of tourism infrastructure development,

which will enable opening up new tourist destinations in the State.

The State is setting up an Institute of Hotel Management and has also taken a lead in assisting local communities

in promoting home stay in villages. The State is also facilitating Responsible Tourism and other niche tourism

products like adventure and eco-tourism. The State is successfully implementing infrastructure projects sanctioned

by the Ministry of Tourism.

Pranpur lies in the midst of ancient Vindhyachal valley, just 3 km from the famed craft centre of Chanderi in the

Ashoknagar District of Madhya Pradesh. More than half of Pranpur's 3,600 inhabitants are involved in weaving

the Chanderi fabric. Pranpur is also home to artisans skilled in metal casting, pottery and stone carving. The local

royal lineage has resulted in a rich cultural heritage, including the lively folk dances of Raee and Sehra and vibrant

festivals.

In Pranpur, the villagers are direct stakeholders in the tourism initiative and earn a livelihood through the provision

of craft and culture based services to visitors.

The impact of the Rural Tourism Project is impressive. The weavers are paid higher wages, get more work days, and

a reserve fund has been created as well for contingent requirements. Due to the gender-sensitization drive, the lot

of the women of the village has also improved. Since the local Panchayat is involved at all levels, each member of

the community is responsible towards ensuring the success of the initiative as a stake holder.

Gangtok, the crown of India's tourist destination is a picturesque landmark of Sikkim. The State Capital embodies

a unique blend of diverse cultures, historic monasteries, traditional architecture in a vibrant and thriving city.

Set amidst lush green valleys, alpine forests and with a majestic frontal view of Mt Khanchendzonga,

Gangtok has emerged as a popular tourist destination for inbound domestic tourists and an increasing number of

foreign travellers.

The State Government has provided infrastructure on a scale which will embrace the global demand and recognition

of Sikkim as an internationally renowned tourist destination.

Flanked by the Western Ghats on one side, the Arabian Sea on the other and strewn with rivers, lagoons, backwaters,

hills and valleys, Kerala encompasses nature at its beautiful best. The land’s picturesque and soothing beauty also

offers visitors umpteen opportunities to unleash their enthusiastic self. The high mountains, gushing rivers, dense

forests and the vast backwater stretches present the right stimulus to indulge in some adventure activity.

The last few years have shown a remarkable popularity in paragliding. The serene valleys and lofty mountains

dotting the State have attracted paragliders from across the world. Given its potential for adventure tourism,

Vagamon, a scenic spot in Idukki district with its hilly terrain, cool climes and vast meadows, has been listed as

the prime location for gliding in the State. The Adventure Sports and Sustainable Tourism Academy (ASSTA)

in partnership with Kerala Tourism organized International Paragliding Festivals in 2006, 2007 & 2008, which

witnessed the participation of a large number of national and international gliders.

Orissa Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) has introduced the most convenient way to explore and

experience Bhubaneswar – the capital city. A well-networked Hop-On-Hop-Off bus service connects the important

tourist locations of the city on two routes namely a City Tour and a Heritage Tour.

OTDC's Hop-On-Hop-Off bus service offers a comfortable, air-conditioned ride around the city with a single

ticket. The ticket is valid for both the City Tour and Heritage Tour for one day. One can get on and off the bus at

any of the destinations on the designated routes as per one's convenience.

Kerala Tourism’s journey towards success began with a shift of focus from mass to quality tourism. Adoption

of sustainable tourism methods was a direct outcome of this positioning. Today, this has evolved into a more

comprehensive ‘Responsible Tourism’ wherein the stakeholders in tourism as well as the tourists take responsibility

for maximizing the positive impacts of tourism and minimizing the negative ones.

Kerala Tourism has accorded prime importance to Responsible Tourism in all its development activities. This is in

line with the State Government’s strong belief that tourism should be an instrument of socio-economic growth and

that a major portion of the revenue generated by tourism should reach key stakeholders such as local communities.

A two-day state-level workshop initiated Responsible Tourism on a pilot basis in four destinations – Kumarakom,

Thekkady, Wayanad and Kovalam. The Second International Conference on Responsible Tourism and the adoption

of the Kerala Declaration has furthered strengthened Kerala’s new journey on the Responsible Tourism path.

Holiday Moods Adventures, incepted in 1997 by Tejbir Singh Anand (Founder & Managing Director), is a

Himalayan specialist company offering eco-friendly adventure travel, emphasizing on responsible & sustainable

tourism practices in India, Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet.

Holiday Moods Adventures has been recently rated as one of the "Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth" by

National Geographic Adventure.

The latest venture by Holiday Moods Adventures is NCR's largest adventure based camp called "Camp Wild" in

the Aravali Valley, at village Dhauj, District Faridabad, Haryana spread over 12 acres of land offering air, land and

water activities.

The Trivandrum Golf Course is the second oldest in India with only the Royal Calcutta Club having an earlier

Resident and Members of the Royal family.

This is a 9 hole links Golf course which has an exotic collection of rare plants and trees. The Trivandrum Golf

Course has a beautiful club house which is a marvelous piece of Heritage Building made in solid teak wood

of Archaeology. The Club House has an open pavilion in which old wooden clubs of 1850 and other antique golfing

equipments are displayed for the benefit of visiting players.

The Trivandrum Golf Course is a major tourist attraction and several domestic and foreign tourists who visit Kerala

make use of this excellent golfing facility. Apart from the game of Golf other sports such as billiards, lawn tennis,

Badminton, Table tennis etc and support facilities like fitness centre, restaurant, bar etc are also functioning in

Kerala being an important tourist destination in the travel map of India, the Trivandrum Golf Course acts as a

catalyst in the promotion of tourism related activities of the State.

The Cochin Port is one of the 12 major ports in India and is one of the busiest maritime gateways to peninsular

India. The Port has already made for itself, a name for being a clean, safe and tourist friendly destination for

cruise shipping. The Port has taken a series of proactive initiatives to build up the infrastructure that is efficient,

user-friendly and evocative of the local milieu. Recently, with financial assistance from the Ministry of Tourism,

the Port has developed its public spaces and tourism infrastructure. For promotion of cruise tourism, apart from

offering monetary incentives, Cochin Port also ensures fast and hassle-free clearances. Today, the Port has become

the most preferred port of call in India. It plays host to all classes of cruise vessels, QM2, Queen Victoria, Legend

of the Seas and Queen Elizabeth 2, to name just a few.

The Cochin Port recently attracted international attention when it successfully hosted the India Stopover of

the prestigious Volvo Ocean Race. The hosting of this event has heightened the standing of Cochin as a major

Qutub Complex, New DelhiArchaeological Survey of India Delhi Circle, G.E. Building Red Fort, Delhi – 110006

Mandu is situated about 35 km south of District town Dhar in Madhya Pradesh on a hill-top.

Mandu is known for its rich architectural heritage dating back to the medieval period. Building activities comprising

of Hindu and Islamic architecture were carried out at Mandu under the patronism of different dynasties in a span of

over one thousand years. Among the earliest, the Lohani group of caves can be assigned to 11th-12th century AD.

However, a large number of structures were constructed between 1400 AD and 1750 AD. Notable monuments

of Mandu are Hoshang Shah’s Maqbara, Jama Masjid, Jahaz Mahal, Hindola Mahal, Taveli Mahal, Hathipole,

Dai ka Mahal, Neelkanth Champa Baoli, Hammam and different water bodies. The well known Roopmati pavillion,

constructed between 1534 AD and 1561 AD, has been associated with the romantic story of Roopmati and

Baz Bahadur.

Excellent work has been done by the Archaeological Survey of India in ensuring high standards in the maintenance

of various heritage structures and the landscape thereof and also in ensuring tourist friendliness of these sites.

The Qutub Complex is dotted with architectural remains dated from 4th century to 19th century Iron Pillar

(4 century AD), a living testimony to the metallurgical technology in ancient India, bears Sanskrit inscription

in Gupta Brahmi script. Qutub Minar (1199 AD), the five storeyed stone tower, built by Qutubu'd Din Aibak,

has a height of 72.5 m with a basal diameter 14.32 m which becomes 2.75 m at the top.

The Quwwatu'l-Islam Mosque (1198 AD) is the earliest extant mosque built by the Delhi Sultans. Tomb of

Iltutmish (1211-36 AD) is profusely carved with inscriptions besides motifs in Saracenic and Hindu tradition.

Ala'i Darwaza (1311 AD) the first building employing Islamic principles of constructions and ornamentation

and Ala'i Minar intended to be twice the size of Qutub Minar besides colonnaded extension to the mosque are

contributions made by Alau'd-Din Khalji. Other remains in the complex includes Alau'd-Din's Tomb and College,

Imam Zamin Tomb, gateways, Major Smith's Cupola, etc.

The facilities provided in and around the Qutub Minar to make it differently-abled friendly is a major initiative of

differently-abled persons such as accessible parking, accessible unisex toilets, lower height ticket windows and clock

room, ramps, provision of wheel chairs, audio guide, signages and provision for assistance for the disabled make it

the most differently-abled friendly monument.

Corbett National Park, established on 8th August 1936, happens to be the first National Park of South Asia and

flagship Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger. It is situated in Nainital and Pauri Districts of Uttarakhand in the

foothills of Himalayas and is spread over an area of 520.84 sq km.

Named after the renowned conservationist Jim Corbett, the National Park is globally famous and annually receives

over 1,90,000 visitors. Ramganga River is the lifeline of Corbett National Park and provides it with enchanting

landscape beauty. Corbett boasts of one of the world's largest tiger populations, rich birdlife and presence of several

endangered species such as Asiatic Elephant, Gharial, Otter, Mahaseer and Hog Deer.

During the last three years (2005 to 2008), an ambitious programme was launched to protect wildlife from poaching

and fire, improve visitor facilities by renovating and upgrading Forest Rest Houses, involve local communities and

provide better experience to the visitors. Funds for renovation were provided by Government of Uttarakhand and

‘Rhapsodies from God’s Own Country – Kerala’Department of Tourism Government of KeralaPark View, Thiruvananthapuram – 695033 Kerala

"The Monumental India" is an extraordinary volume of photography that documents North India’s architectural

heritage on a scale never seen before. Every page constitutes a revelation - wide open panoramas that startle with

their immaculate clarity - the luminous detail inside a Mughal tomb, the airy lightness of a Rajput palace, the

uprearing dimension of a desert fort, the teeming life of a temple relief, the still spaces of a Buddhist monastery.

These monuments, some crumbling and forgotten, some lovingly preserved, some integrated into the present,

are giant page-markers in the chronicles of India. They insist on a visual interpretation that is itself monumental,

and the size of this book is homage to their import. The images are philosophic as well as documentary, incorporating

both scale and detail, mixing truth and technology, relative and absolute at the same time.

The ongoing efforts of Kerala Tourism to popularise its tourism attractions paved way to the sponsorship of a DVD

series titled "Rhapsodies from God's Own Country", produced by Invis Multimedia.

The ever-inspiring natural beauty of Kerala and its outstanding cultural heritage are meticulously captured and

presented in a set of eight DVDs. The content includes backwaters, hills, beaches, festivals, drums, art forms and

monsoons of Kerala. All DVD titles are in English language and the duration of each DVD is around 25 minutes.

It is a unique bouquet of audio-visual treat from 'God's Own Country'.

The DVD series comes in a very special handmade packing by the traditional craftsmen of Kerala.
