AWARDS &ACCOLADES

Each year, the Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS) recognizes and honors individuals and organizations that have rendered significant contributions to the field of parks and recreation. This year, the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department took home five awards, including the Gold Medal for Class I. The Texas Gold Medal Awards are modeled after those of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The biggest achievement that a department can earn on the state level, these awards honor departments for excellence in the field of recreation and park management for the past three (3) years.

At right is a look at the other four awards that the APRD took home at this year’s state conference.

PROMOTIONAL AND MARKETING ExCELLENCEThis award honors the most outstanding promotional efforts of a park, recreation and leisure agencies for the past year. In the months leading up to a major department event, Ecofest Arlington, a pseudo-mascot, Eco-man, was created with the initial purpose of promoting “green friendly” department events. The department created a short video promo for Ecofest Arlington in which a green-friendly superhero (Eco-man) was introduced. The plot of the video consisted of an everyday citizen rising up to lead the fight against environmental ignorance, and promote green-friendly living in Arlington, Texas. Eco-man became an immediate hit with the Arlington community.

Following the video and event in 2013, the APRD received numerous requests for Eco-man to make public appearances. He was asked to attend elementary and junior high field trips, events at the River Legacy Living Science Center, nature preserve tours, non-profit 5k races and many more. To date, the Eco-man promotion has amassed more than 75,000 video views on the department social media platforms and more than 150,000 organic online impressions. The campaign helped create interdepartmental continuity and, most importantly, helped create a rapport with a whole new generation of Arlingtonites which has far exceeded the agencies initial expectations.

MEDIA ExCELLENCEThe Media Excellence award recognizes parks & recreation agencies and/or media outlets (television, radio, newspaper, etc) that provide exemplary coverage or sponsorship of park & recreation events, programs, facilities or issues.

The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department won the Media Excellence award for its inaugural Hall of Fame Arlington Golf Classic. The golf division of the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department collaborated with Arlington City Council, city management and surrounding business leaders in hosting the first-year event in September. The tournament was a rousing success, netting $10,700 for our junior golf programs after setting an initial fundraising goal of $4,500. The majority of the proceeds went towards the creation of Arlington’s SNAG® Golf (‘Starting New At Golf’) program, a revolutionary approach to teaching the basics of golf in a fun and friendly environment to beginning golfers of all ages.

Partnerships with local media outlets helped create a great buzz for the event. The APRD marketing staff also did its part by designing the tournament logo, creating all print and digital marketing collateral, sponsorship packet and developing a tournament website complete with registration and payment gateway in-house. Despite a relatively small budget, the ad RPM (revenue per thousand impressions) from this campaign was estimated at $133. Targeted posts on Google AdWords and Facebook resulted in four teams registering for the event ($6,000 revenue) thru direct links back to the tournament website.

BEST WEBSITEThis award recognizes the creativity or innovation in the development of web sites or home pages communicating and promoting the value of public recreation on the Internet. The Unplug and Connect website was judged on content, design, ease of use, and currency.

The Unplug & Connect website serves as the central hub for the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department’s Unplug & Connect campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to encourage people to unplug from their devices and hectic lives, and to connect with nature, family and community. The Unplug & Connect website features a clean, minimal design that is responsive to devices of all sizes. The homepage begins by featuring video content that promotes the Unplug & Connect mission. These videos were used as cable TV and YouTube advertisements. Following the videos, the site shares compelling statistics which link to more information about the benefits of connecting with nature, community and family. The homepage then uses large graphics to feature blog content from one of four categories: nature, community, family and wellness. The page concludes with social integration that includes Facebook comments and live feeds from Twitter and Instagram.

MAINTENANCE ACHIEVEMENTThe final award the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department won was the Maintenance Achievement for the Tierra Verde Biodiesel Project. This award recognizes creativity or innovation in the development of unique equipment to solve a particular problem; the development or discovery of a material or chemical to solve a problem; or the development and implementation of a system or process to maintain a park, building, pool or piece of equipment more efficiently or effectively.

Tierra Verde Golf Club, a City of Arlington golf course, is using biodiesel in its maintenance mowers. Fryer oil is collected from the golf course grills as well as some patrons and processed into biodiesel. The biodiesel is produced on site and blended with regular diesel fuel per manufacturer specifications. The biodiesel is much cheaper than petroleum diesel and eliminates a facility waste stream.

BOUNCE HOUSE BOOT CAMP I’m Derrick Flowers. As the CEO and founder of DeFined Fitness Revolution, I have trained everybody from athletes to people who want to work out for recreational purposes. This led me to working with children. One of the biggest issues that we face as parents is childhood obesity. That’s why I want to introduce our Bounce House Boot Camp for kids! Many kids who live sedentary lifestyle may not think of working out as being a fun word. They equate working out with being tired and not having fun. This is the exact reason why I implemented this program. Not to be mistaken, this is a workout program, but we’ll implement an obstacle course bounce house to add fun to the equation. Classes are ongoing.

MAKE FITNESS FIT The importance of being physically fit cannot be overstated. While advances in technology have been a boon in terms of productivity and networking, these advances have also made us more sedentary as a society. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the average 8-10 year old in the U.S. spends around eight hours per day in front of a screen. The average teen clocks in with 11 hours or more per day of screen time. This sedentary lifestyle can lead our kids down the road to obesity, high blood pressure, and other health problems.

The average teen spends 11 hours or more per day in front of a screen. And it’s not just kinds. Adults need to limit our screen time as well. According to a recent study from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), anyone who devotes more than four hours daily on screen-based entertainment such as TV, video games or surfing the web, increases their risk of heart attack and stroke by 113 percent. The risk of death by any cause also increases by nearly 50 percent compared to those who spend less than two hours daily interacting with a screen-based device. But with jobs that may require us to stare for long periods at a computer and with smartphones always chirping or buzzing to gain our attention, how can we limit our screen time? And how can we fit more fitness into our already packed schedules?

First, it’s important to step away from the TV and, increasingly, the smartphone. Then, plan enough time to get a good amount of daily exercise for the most benefit.

According to Fitday.com, a leading fitness website, “you should begin by warming up for 5 to 10 minutes to increase your blood flow and prepare your body for activity. Follow the warm up with several minutes of stretches to increase your flexibility and lower your risk for injury. Complete your selected exercise or activity for 20 to 30 minutes and conclude the workout with 5 to 10 minutes of cool down and stretching.”

Want to ensure your children are on the right track in terms of fitness?Make your kids’ bedrooms screen-free, make the TV off-limits for certain days or hours and provide active alternatives such as encouraging them to take walks, ride bikes, play outside, or play indoor active games instead of watching TV. Playing with your kids – anything from a game of tag in the backyard to swimming at a community pool to helping them practice their tennis skills - is often a big draw. You might also work with your family to create a list of fitness activities you all might enjoy – such as playing soccer or basketball at your local park or learning a new sport at your community recreation center - so you can refer to it when your family’s had too much TV time.

HyDRATION Wednesday, July 15 • SRCNy • 10:00-11:00 AM • FREE

Staying hydrated during the summer months can sometimes be difficult. Come to class with us to learn some signs and symptoms or dehydration and the importance of how to keep hydrated.

aturally Fun Photographer Bob Brennan isn’t one to ask for much in return.

Perhaps his humble beginnings on an Iowa farm in 1938 had something to do with that. Maybe his “give more than you take” philosophy on life was developed while growing up in foster homes throughout the 40’s and 50’s. Whatever the root of his generosity and character might be, Bob Brennan has had a

tremendous, positive impact on the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department.

He has been involved in photography for more than a decade in the Arlington, Texas community. He has produced work for local car shows, Arlington Today Magazine, Art on the Greene and the South Street Arts Festival, City Hall, Arlington Fire Department, AISD, just to name a few.

44 City of Arlington Parks and Recreation • N a t u r a l l y F u N . o r g

However, one thing differentiates Bob from many other local photographers: he’s done it all for free.

“I’ve never sold a file. I’d rather just give them away,” Brennan said. “I made a deal with many of these local organizations years ago: I’d allow them to download my files and use them in any way they wished just as long as it benefited their department or the City of Arlington as a whole. With photo credit to me, that is pay enough.”

If you’re wondering where this generosity and commitment to community came from, you have to understand the man behind the camera.

Bob Brennan began his professional working life in Des Moines, Iowa in 1959 where he was employed in the information technology field wiring unit record machines and writing programs for mainframe computers.

After moving to southern California, where he worked in the early years of IT in the corporate motorcycle industry he also pursued an interest in motocross racing. His employment with Sanger Harris (now Macy’s) led him to move to Dallas/Fort Worth. He eventually laid permanent roots in the City of Arlington where he has now lived for the past 42 years. Bob is retired from Macy’s and Pier 1 Imports.

“We fell in love with Arlington and never left. We made our life here but also I had a lot of fun pursuing what interested me. And, as my family would tell you, I have had a lot of hobbies, Brennan said with a grin. “I’ve always been into technology: computers,

HAM radio, software, I just love that stuff. I also had an interest in photography, cameras and everything, but I only got serious about it 10 or 12 years ago.“

Utilizing photography as a means of capturing meaningful moments in his life, he began photographing different environments and events around the city. From his granddaughter’s high school dances to his grandson’s baseball games and transition into the Arlington Fire Department, Bob began to develop a story board of his family’s life. With five grandchildren and 13 total family members in Arlington, there was a lot to shoot. He and wife Bonnie are married 51 years.

Photography on Facebook also became a way to stay in touch with long-lost friends. Therefore, Brennan also began highlighting his own personal experiences around the City of Arlington.

“I’ve been involved with nature all my life. If it’s out there and growing in nature I like to see and share it, so my adventures in the parks were perfect for me. I found out about the Southwest Nature Preserve during 2006. At the time it was just 60 acres, more or less, of undeveloped land sitting 1 mile from my house. That’s what got me involved with the parks because I started going in there and taking pictures of all the critters,” Brennan said.

“I knew a person whose house backs up to the south side of the large pond. He introduced me to the former parks director Pete Jamieson. I told Pete that if the department ever had a desire to develop the land, that I had some great photographs

that I’d be willing to share. I turned them over to him. I’ve photographed every square inch of that park so many times that they used a lot of the photos to help get the park renovated,” he added.

After a few years, Bob’s aspirations grew. He eventually decided to set off on a personal mission to photograph every park in the City of Arlington - all 94 of them. Even after suffering a stroke in 2014, he returned to his feet and continues his journey, so far he has “pictured” 36 parks.

“The parks department connects neighborhoods through parks and the city. They help bring communities together. They’re important and I want to show their beauty to people,” Brennan said. “I don’t go out to the parks and say I’m going to shoot 400 files today, I just play in Arlington and I’m happy that others can benefit from my experiences.”

Bob Brennan’s photography and generosity has become an asset to the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department. His work has helped put a face to many of the department’s assets and has been used in countless park planning documents. His photography is also a main feature of the department’s park finder pages.

“The parks department connects neighborhoods

through parks and the city. They help bring

communities together. They’re important and I

want to show their beauty to people.”— BoB BRENNAN

It’s hard to find a more beautiful course than the award-winning Tierra Verde Golf Club. Tierra Verde is the first golf course in Texas and the first municipal course in the world to be certified as an Audubon Signature Sanctuary. Walk onto the first tee and enter an environment where golf and nature come together in harmony.

Opened in 1998, and carved from 250 acres of secluded terrain, the course’s unsurpassed layout encompasses a variety of natural settings and offers an outstanding playing experience on every hole. The course has been host to many prestigious events, including the Byron Nelson Qualifying Tournament on multiple occasions.

Tierra Verde has been named the top golf course in the DFW Metroplex the last three years (2012-14) by AvidGolfer magazine.*

Each hole has five sets of tees, sculpted fairways, strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards - all accented by stately trees and beautiful native grasses.

The facility features a state-of-the-art golf learning center, a lighted driving range, three-hole practice course and large chipping and putting green complex. Also offered are lessons and clinics taught by PGA/LPGA professionals and apprentices, an outdoor pavilion and full-service restaurant, Ventana Grille, that complement every event from small corporate outings to large fundraising tournaments.

Named after life-long resident of Arlington Chester W. Ditto, Ditto Golf Course is located in north Arlington, just 15 minutes from the DFW airport and near the heart of Arlington’s Entertainment District, featuring the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys and Six Flags.

As a long-standing favorite among golfers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Chester Ditto is 18-holes of challenging golf blending plush fairways narrowed by trees and accented with strategically placed sand bunkers and landing areas.

A driving range, practice putting green and chipping area are offered to complete one’s golfing experience.

The clubhouse offers snack bar concessions and a full line pro shop with today’s most popular equipment and apparel. Chester Ditto also offers tournaments and private and group lessons taught by PGA Professionals and Apprentices.

Chester Ditto was named one of AvidGolfer’s top-5 Value Priced Courses (Under $50) in its 2014 rankings.

The course is currently in the Master Planning process for significant improvements to both the golf course and clubhouse. To review the plans and give your input, please visit: ArlingtonGolf.com/cwditto_plan

LAKe ARLiNGTONGOLF COURse

Lake Arlington Golf Course is a beautiful 18-hole facility nestled on 185 acres on the north shore of Lake Arlington. The course was designed with all types of players in mind and with the newly renovated fairways and greens, the course provides a great golfing experience at an exceptional value.

Lake Arlington’s time-honored design blends open and tree-lined fairways, long challenging par 3’s and scenic greens to appeal to every level of player.

A challenge for the professional as well as the beginner, the four sets of tees, ranging from 5,485 yards to 6,637, provides a fair playing field that appeals to every level of proficiency.

The clubhouse features a well stocked pro shop and grill. Lake Arlington’s combination of enjoyable golf, convenient location and professional staff create the perfect setting for group outings and tournaments.

The course offers challenging golf along with a practice putting green and chipping area at an exceptional value.

A Ralph Plummer design, the course was renovated in 1998 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013.

Avid Golfer voted Lake Arlington the most kid-friendly course in DFW in 2013, while the layout garnered a Top-50 public course ranking in the publication too.

PGA Head Professional Michael Berneburg and his staff offer golf lessons for all ages and ability levels. Call 817-451-6101 for rates and availability.

MeADOWBROOK PARK GOLF COURse

Arlington’s tradition of outstanding golf began in the 1920’s with Meadowbrook Park Golf Course. Conveniently located just east of downtown Arlington, the golf course provides an excellent choice for families and leagues.

The golf course is the centerpiece of Arlington’s first city park. Arlington purchased the 52-acre site in 1923 and it was sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club.

The site includes picnic grounds and the tree-filled nine-hole golf course. Many of the holes feature vistas of nearby AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Meadowbrook Park is the perfect facility to learn the game of golf and sharpen short-game skills. The 9-Hole, par-33 layout consists of six par 4s, 250 to 300 yards in length, and three par 3s, approximately 150 yards in length.

The course can be easily walked or played under time constraints and has a long-standing commitment to beginning adult and junior golfers. Golf legends Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson once led golf clinics here.

Its small greens and narrow fairways are designed to challenge every level of player.

The clubhouse offers a full line pro shop, concessions, and golf cart rentals. Exclusive facility rental opportunities are available for both golf and non-golf outdoor activities.

With a long-standing commitment to environmental enhancement and preservation, Meadowbrook Park Golf Course is like a walk in the park for the whole family!

The Learn to Swim program offers customers of all ages the opportunity to enjoy swim lessons on weekends and weeknights.

Weekend classes are offered Saturdays or Sundays over a period of nine weeks.

Weekday lessons are on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays and run for five weeks.

Our Learn to Swim program includes parent / tot, preschool, adult and Red Cross certified swimming classes. We also offer private lessons for all ages.

For more information, or to register for the Learn to Swim program, please call Hugh Smith Indoor Pool at 817-275-0513.

LEVEL ASSESSMENTThe City of Arlington’s Learn to Swim Program follows the American Red Cross Swim and Water Safety Program. We assess each child on the first day of class to help with accurate placement of the child in the correct level. If possible, we will move the child to a level that best suits his or her skill level. If a child is registered in the incorrect class, every effort will be made to place them into a class of an appropriate level but cannot be guaranteed.

We ask parents to help assist us with registering their child in the correct level by talking to their child’s instructor at the end of the session and/or following the guidelines below.

The City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department has been working on updating the master plan and producing construction documents for phase I development of Julia Burgen Park in Central Arlington. This linear park, which runs along a section of Johnson Creek, is named after the former Arlington City Council member and long-time environmental activist.

In 2005 the City acquired federal funding and arranged a voluntary buy-out of homes that were prone to flooding when Johnson Creek over-spilled its banks. More than 100 homes were removed and that demolition project left sections of streets with no homes. These streets are currently deteriorating. The updated master plan for the park includes the removal of these crumbling asphalt streets and the construction of a new 12’ wide concrete hike and bike trail that will loop around the park in addition to other amenities.

Phase I construction, slated to begin in Fall 2015, will include removal of existing streets and construction of a portion of the hike and bike trail on the north side of the creek. Later phases of development will include more trail and bridges that will allow the trail to cross the creek in key locations.

In addition, the master plan for Julia Burgen Park includes a lighted parking lot, a shaded playground with separate areas of equipment designed for 2 to 5-year-olds and 5 to 12-year-olds, picnic tables and benches with a new drinking fountain.

The proposed phase I construction will be funded through the 2008 Bond Referendum and Linear Park Fees.

PROPOSED MASTER PLAN IMPROVEMENTS:• Shaded playground with separate areas of equipment for 2 to 5-year-olds and 5 to 12-year-olds• Drinking fountain, benches and an ADA picnic table.• Twelve-foot-wide, concrete hike & bike trail• A lighted parking lot

“Development of the park and construction of the hike and bike trail will provide numerous recreational opportunities for area citizens to allow for important connections from the looped trail over to the UTA community,” said Parks Planning Manager De’Onna Garner. “Julia Burgen Park and its natural open spaces will be a beautiful place to go walking/jogging, bike riding, bird watching, and more, once all development is completed.”

Lake Arlington is a municipally owned multi-purpose reservoir used for municipal and industrial water supply, and for recreational purposes. The reservoir is located on Village Creek in Tarrant County at the western edge of Arlington. The City of Arlington, recognizing the need for additional water supply, began construction of the lake in 1956 and completed the project March 31, 1957. The lake covers approximately 2,250 surface acres and has a watershed of 143 square miles. The service spillway overflow elevation is 550 feet above mean sea level.

Lake Arlington has various facilities for your enjoyment. There are two parks located along Lake Arlington’s eastern shore, Richard Simpson Park (6300 W. Arkansas Ln.) to the north and Bowman Springs Park (7003 Poly Webb Rd.) to the south.

Special attractions at these parks include boat launches, picnic areas, BBQ grills and restrooms. Pavilions are available for rent at both parks. Richard Simpson Park also has the Lake Arlington Activity Room, which can be reserved for private functions. A recreation permit is required to place, operate or keep any boat or other craft on Lake Arlington, including rowboats, canoes, kayaks, motorboats, sailboats, barges, personal watercraft and sailboards.
