The second trick to help you learn Russian words fast is a new principle known as "contextuallearning."  For all the power of mnemonic devices, they fix the word only in a superficial locationin the brain. The deeper meaning of the word is usually lost on the learner.

Yes, you can recall the word, but you have little feel for it. It's almost a robotic response, at leastat first. Mnemonic devices are a must, but they need to be supplemented with contextuallearning. Let's go straight to an example for clarification:

A cyclops is a mythical creature with only odeen eye.

A bicycle has dva wheels.

Odeen plus odeen equals dva.

The trick to learning a new word from context is having the meaning be crystal clear, andcompletely unambiguous. The best thing about contextual learning is that it's organic andrequires no effort...(except in the preparation of the phrase itself, which has to be done withgreat care.) You brain is designed to learn language this way...it's how you learned, in fact,every English word you know.

Of course, hearing it in context once is great. Hearing it a hundred times will really drill it in. Andyou'll be learning and feeling the word on a far deeper meaning, much closer to how nativespeakers grasp the word. Think about it. What if suddenly, by some bizzare new law, we wereforced to suddenly call RUGS "covyours". You'd wipe your feet on that little covyour on the frontstep, so you don't track dirt in the house. You'd go the World of Covyours store at the mall, andconsider buying a covyour with some really elaborate design, made by hand. And so on. Ifeveryone called rugs "covyours", you'd soon know this word every bit as well as Russians do.
