Here, the N
ature Trails running through Asturias and
Cantabria are briefly described: A

This section of the River Ebro Nature Trail is located in the
region of Cam
poo–Los Valles, in the province of Cantabria,
and visits the source of the River Ebro and its first kilome-
tres as a stream. This area, surrounded by beautiful high
mountains, boasts a rich historical and natural heritage.
It is considered the gate to Castile and has been used by
traders and travellers from the plains for m
any centuries. The Ebro Reservoir, the La Robla Railw
ay, the Arroyelos
Church,the Ídolo de Ruanales and the A
brigo del Cubular
are especially noteworthy.

The Cantabrian M
ountains Nature Trail crosses inland
Asturias from
one end to the other, a route that surprises the traveller w
ith spots of extraordinary beauty hidden in spectacular m
ountain counties, and takes them to a pre-
dominantly agricultural w
orld where traditional w
orks and custom
s still set the pace of life. Its 606 km include seve-
ral protected areas.
Muñigo-C
ovadonga (Asturias).
Short and sweet, this natural trail is 1.6 km
and leads to the heart of the Picos de Europa N
atural Park, which w
as created on 22 July 1918 under the nam
e of the Covadonga
Mountain N
atural Park. In 1995, the oldest among the
Spanish National Parks changed its nam
e to the current one and extended its surface to 64,660 ha, w
hich are a m
elting pot of natural beauty, history and myth.
Sarón-La Penilla (C
antabria).
In the Cayón Valley, located betw
een the mountain ran-
ges of Caballar and La M
atanza, the Pisueña River merges
with the Pas River against a backdrop of oaks, hazelnut
trees, comm
on hawthorns, beeches, hollies and large pas-
tures. The 3.3 km of this trail are anim
ated by the tweeting
and chirping of the many species of birds that populate
the valley.
Villaescusa (Santander).
Villaescusa
is a
village in
Cantabria,
located in
the Southern A
rc of the Bay of Santander and integrated in the county of the sam
e name. From
the Cabárceno N
ature Park, starting in O
bregón, this 7.4 km long nature trail
crosses meadow
s, small w
ood patches of oak, maple, ash
tree, chestnut and strawberry trees and reaches the sea in
the village of Astillero.

Under this nam
e, three sections of this natural trail lo-cated in the heart of the A
sturias side of the Cantabrian
Mountains:
from
the Valdem
urio reservoir
to Santa
Marina (10.2 km
), Entrago-Cueva H
uerta (8.8 km) and
Santa Marina-Ricabo (6.8 km
). These routes boast an ex-ceptional landscape beauty, w
hich are the home of m
any of the m
ost endangered species native to Asturias, such
as bears, otters or Spanish imperial eagles, and offers the
travellers with a rich cultural heritage w
hich is reflected in local architecture, traditions and cuisine.

alón (Asturias)
This 15.6 km route connects the greenw
ay that links Fuso de la Reina and the Parque de Invierno in O
viedo with
the Senda del Oso, w
hich starts in Tuñón and continues through m
eadows, chestnut patches and riverside w
ood-land along the Rivers N
alón and Trubia.
Toranzo Valley (C
antabria).
Corvera
de Toranzo
is a
village in
the A
utonomous
Com
munity of C
antabria located in the Pas basin, more
exactly on the Toranzo Valley, region of Pas-Miera, in an
area also known as Valles Pasiegos, w
hich is limited by
Puente Viesgo to the north; w
ith Luena to the South; w
ith Santiurde de Toranzo to the East and with A
renas de Iguña, A
nievas and San Felices de Buelma to the w
est. This nature trail stretches a little over 15 km
divided in two
pretty, relaxed routes.
