    H ere, the N

    ature Trails running through A sturias and

    C antabria are briefly described: A

    ovadonga, or Sarón - La Penilla, longer trails such as Villaescusa, Río N

    alón or the different sections the Senda del O so, as w

    ell as longer routes such as C

    ordillera C antábrica. Inland A

    avarre, Zaragoza, Tarragona).

    This section of the River Ebro N ature Trail is located in the

    region of C am

    poo–Los Valles, in the province of C antabria,

    and visits the source of the River Ebro and its first kilom e-

    tres as a stream . This area, surrounded by beautiful high

    m ountains, boasts a rich historical and natural heritage.

    It is considered the gate to C astile and has been used by

    traders and travellers from the plains for m

    any centuries. The Ebro Reservoir, the La Robla Railw

    ay, the A rroyelos

    C hurch,the Ídolo de Ruanales and the A

    brigo del C ubular

    are especially notew orthy.

    The C antabrian M

    ountains N ature Trail crosses inland

    A sturias from

    one end to the other, a route that surprises the traveller w

    ith spots of extraordinary beauty hidden in spectacular m

    ountain counties, and takes them to a pre-

    dom inantly agricultural w

    orld w here traditional w

    orks and custom

    s still set the pace of life. Its 606 km include seve-

    ral protected areas.

    M uñigo-C

    ovadonga (A sturias).

    Short and sw eet, this natural trail is 1.6 km

    and leads to the heart of the Picos de Europa N

    atural Park, w hich w

    as created on 22 July 1918 under the nam

    e of the C ovadonga

    M ountain N

    atural Park. In 1995, the oldest am ong the

    Spanish N ational Parks changed its nam

    e to the current one and extended its surface to 64,660 ha, w

    hich are a m

    elting pot of natural beauty, history and m yth.

    Sarón-La P enilla (C

    antabria).

    In the C ayón Valley, located betw

    een the m ountain ran-

    ges of C aballar and La M

    atanza, the Pisueña River m erges

    w ith the Pas River against a backdrop of oaks, hazelnut

    trees, com m

    on haw thorns, beeches, hollies and large pas-

    tures. The 3.3 km of this trail are anim

    ated by the tw eeting

    and chirping of the m any species of birds that populate

    the valley.

    V illaescusa (Santander).

    V illaescusa

    is a

    village in

    C antabria,

    located in

    the Southern A

    rc of the Bay of Santander and integrated in the county of the sam

    e nam e. From

    the C abárceno N

    ature Park, starting in O

    bregón, this 7.4 km long nature trail

    crosses m eadow

    s, sm all w

    ood patches of oak, m aple, ash

    tree, chestnut and straw berry trees and reaches the sea in

    the village of A stillero.

    U nder this nam

    e, three sections of this natural trail lo- cated in the heart of the A

    sturias side of the C antabrian

    M ountains:

    from

    the Valdem

    urio reservoir

    to Santa

    M arina (10.2 km

    ), Entrago-C ueva H

    uerta (8.8 km ) and

    Santa M arina-Ricabo (6.8 km

    ). These routes boast an ex- ceptional landscape beauty, w

    hich are the hom e of m

    any of the m

    ost endangered species native to A sturias, such

    as bears, otters or Spanish im perial eagles, and offers the

    travellers w ith a rich cultural heritage w

    hich is reflected in local architecture, traditions and cuisine.

    This 15.6 km route connects the greenw

    ay that links Fuso de la Reina and the Parque de Invierno in O

    viedo w ith

    the Senda del O so, w

    hich starts in Tuñón and continues through m

    eadow s, chestnut patches and riverside w

    ood- land along the Rivers N

    alón and Trubia.

    Toranzo V alley (C

    antabria).

    is a

    village in

    the A

    utonom ous

    C om

    m unity of C

    antabria located in the Pas basin, m ore

    exactly on the Toranzo Valley, region of Pas-M iera, in an

    area also know n as Valles Pasiegos, w

    hich is lim ited by

    Puente V iesgo to the north; w

    ith Luena to the South; w

    ith Santiurde de Toranzo to the East and w ith A

    renas de Iguña, A

    nievas and San Felices de Buelm a to the w

    est. This nature trail stretches a little over 15 km

    divided in tw o

    pretty, relaxed routes.
