Editor’s note: Huge thanks to ONC Board Member Kim Wheatley who spearheaded this project, wrote the grant for funding, and saw us through the coordination, installation and educational aspects of our first solar project. The Solar Project at Ogden Nature Center was conceptualized in 2007, funded by a $20,000 grant from Rocky Mountain Power and put into operation July 2008. Its purpose is educational; we want to show what alternative energy is all about, why it is necessary, and what individuals, families, governments and businesses can do to facilitate the transition from fossil fuels to other forms of energy. The solar array is installed just off the southeast side of the LS Peery Education Center. Come out and take a look. Ogden Nature Center was the recipient of a 2007 Rocky Mountain Power grant to create a solar power generating station. Ken Gardner and his staff, of Gardner Engineering in Ogden, embraced ONC’s goals and provided the know-how and technical savvy in this continued on p. 2

rapidly evolving industry. Ken’s people, along with Richard Patton, ONC sanctuary and facility manager, installed the system in July. Our installation was to be cutting edge. We wanted to show the state of the industry at its best and what could be achieved per dollar of investment. Most of all, we wanted to give our audiences the best practical knowledge we could...no hype and no nonsense. Projects like this take a lot of money and most everyone thinks in terms of return-on-investment; that is, how much ONC will save on its energy bill, given the thousands spent to install the system. The answer is a bit discouraging. We estimate $362 per year --$405 after recent rate increases. But the question itself tells us a lot about how we got into this fossil fuel dependency and global warming mess in the first place. Up until a few years ago not many people thought about costs associated with releasing millions of year’s worth of stored carbon into

Earth’s atmosphere in a few hundred years time. But what a difference now; the world will soon put a fairly high price on carbon emissions and any return on investment question will include calculations of carbon reduction. So what will ONC save? Around $400 per year, PLUS about 4 tons of carbon emissions into the atmosphere. If the system remains productive for 20 years, we save around $8,000 in electricity costs ($14,000 if we see 5% per year increases in electricity prices; $25,000 if we see 10% annual increases) and some 80 tons of green house gases. Of course, our intent is to influence your energy choices toward lower carbon emissions and make our carbon return-on-investment much, much better. If you are wondering what your personal carbon footprint is, you can calculate it on the EPA website http://www.epa.gov/climat-echange/emissions/ind_calculator.html. Right now, you can help wean the country from fossil fuels and simultaneously lower your own carbon footprint by enrolling in Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program. For a

solar ...continued from p. 1few dollars a month voluntarily added to your electric bill, you can have the same impact in reducing carbon as the $20,000 system we just installed at Ogden Nature Center. Read about the program at http://www.rockymtnpower.net/Article/Article65531.html.

If you’ve visited the Nature Center Picnic Grove over the past few months, you may have noticed the eight foot fence and many rows of orange flags on the northwest corner of the preserve. This project is a collaborative effort between the Ogden Nature Center and Northern Arizona University that combines restoration and cutting edge environmental research. Two PhD students have planted over 1,000 cottonwood trees to help conserve native riparian ecosystems and provide more insight into how biodiversity is created and maintained over time.

Restoration of an important ecosystem Restoring cottonwood forests not only brings back the trees themselves, but also provides habitat for hundreds of species that depend on these trees. Cottonwoods are considered a foundation species. That is, they provide food and habitat for hundreds, if not thousands of other organisms and, to a large extent, they also drive ecosystem processes, such as nutrient cycling and water filtration. As testament to their importance to other organisms, cottonwoods only occupy ~2% of the land area in the U.S., yet 70% of migrating birds nest and forage in these trees. At the Ogden Nature Center alone, researchers have documented over 200 insect species and scores of fungal andbacterial species living on cottonwoods. Despite their importance to the local ecosystem, cottonwood forests are one of the most endangered ecosystems in North America. The U.S. Geologic Survey estimates that at least 90% of riparian ecosystems (of which cottonwood is a major component) have been destroyed. Consequently, the plantings at the Ogden Nature Center represent a much-needed

restoration effort. In addition to simply putting trees in the ground, PhD students from Northern Arizona University and at least five other universities will use these trees to conduct ecological experiments to learn even more about how riparian ecosystems behave.

Current and past research at the ONC Northern Arizona University has beenconducting environmental research at the Nature Center for nearly 20 years. In that time, they have conducted dozens of studies and published over 80 papers in scientific journals. One of the big findings of this research is that individuals matter. In other words, just as every human is different, every tree is unique as well. Trees aren’t just different in how fast they grow, or in the architecture of their branches, but also in the number and kinds of other organisms they associate with. For example, Joe Bailey, a former student at NAU and current professor at the University of Tennessee, showed that each tree differs in the number and kinds of aphids it is susceptible to. Further, because birds like the Black-headed Grosbeak and Black-capped Chickadee are attracted to trees with lots of aphids, the trees not only varied in the number of aphids they supported, but they also varied in the level of bird foraging (Bailey et al 2006). Consequently, by planting a wide range of tree types, we can indirectly support a wider range of other organisms (Crutsinger 2006). Building on studies like these, we will be using the trees planted this year to learn how trees influence the surrounding ecosystem.

and an increase in threats to our air and water supplies. We have to make sure our children understand these challenges and are well-prepared to overcome them in the years ahead. As kids spend less time outside and more time inside and plugged in, they become increasingly disconnected from nature and the outside world. The NCLI coalition says, “The ramifications are profound. Dramatic increases in childhood obesity, diabetes and attention deficit disorder are increasing at an alarming rate. We must make it a priority to re-connect young people to their natural world.” Environmental education can help. The Ogden Nature Center has been providing this kind of educational experience for almost 33 years, though we usually call our programs nature education. More than 10,000 school children visit the Nature Center each year on field trips. Kids and teachers alike love their time here and love being outside. Each month we offer topics which help children make connections to the natural world. The Ogden Nature Center’s 152-acre preserve offers an accessible, diverse landscape where students can explore plants, animals, soil, water, seasons, orienteering and the natural and cultural history of our region. The No Child Left Inside Coalition defines environmental education for us. EE includes: • Learning in the field as well as the classroom• Incorporates the teaching methods of outdoor education, experiential education, and place-based education • Is inherently interdisciplinary• Promotes school/community partnerships • Is hands-on, student-centered, inquiry driven, engages higher level thinking skills, and relevant to students’ everyday lives • Develops awareness, increases knowledge, builds skills, and creates the capacity for stewardship and good citizen-ship • Helps address the causes of “nature deficit disorder” • Boosts student achievement in math, science, reading, writing and social studies. The future looks more promising for environmental education and for our children. The No Child Left Inside Coalition’s website has a wealth of information at www.cbf.org and we encourage you to read more. We thank them for the use of information from their website for this article.
