I havent had any problems in my current abode (thank goodness), but in my previous house eesh. Built in 1923, it was basically an overpriced sieve. It had tons of character, which in realtor parlance means expensive problems that are not easily corrected. Theres nothing as disheartening as seeing water marks on the newly-reworked plaster ceilings you ordered to the tune of umpteen thousands of dollars. And the marks are just a symptom of the problem who knows what lies beneath? To the layman, its a vexing mystery. Thats where the professionals like Josh Ostrowski can be invaluable resources. Where you and I see water marks, he spots a miniscule entryway between the exterior and interior of your home and figures out how to fix it. Just as important, hes a roofer with a conscience recycling asphalt shingles to be added to pavement for roads. Check out what he has to say about it on pages 50-51. Not unrelated, were running an article from the Better Business Bureau on the dangers of unreliable, traveling home improvement contractors such as those who work on roofing, painting, asphalt work and installing security systems. Complaints about these types of individuals and companies, many of whom sweep into town after damaging storms occur, are on the rise. Thats why its so important to do your research and choose a local contractor you can trust. Look for a contractor with an established business in the area, ask for references and check them out. Also, look into the contractors standard of work and his professional affiliations; verify his insurance; and check to see if he needs

Lets face it. No one gives a thought to the roof over their head until theres a problem with it.

to be licensed. Check with the BBB for a report on the contractor. Sound advice for anyone who needs work done. Finally, you hear a lot about gluten these days: its bad for you, how so many people cant tolerate it, how to avoid it, etc. But unless youve been properly diagnosed with Celiac Disease a condition in which gluten is treated like an invader by the immune system, resulting in damage to the intestines, low energy levels and emotional ups and downs what do you really know about it? Dan Stearns explains it all in his article on a gluten-free diet. Be sure to check it out because theres lots of valuable information. Have a healthy, happy July!

Discover wellness treasures in rural communitiesBy Jennifer Culver, CPC The Wautoma, Wis., motto a few years ago was Small Town, Big Dream, when the high school football team set out for the state competition. This hymn is still relevant in Wautoma and other small communities found in key people and businesses striving to make a difference. Cathy Favelle, of Anya Advanced Skin Care and Yoga in Wautoma, demonstrates this mantra beautifully. A long-time resident, yoga practitioner and entrepreneur in the community, she built upon her passion of sharing her love and gifts with others in her home town by obtaining her yoga teacher certification in 2009. She joyfully empowers others to improve their inner and outer beauty through her skincare studio and her yoga instruction. Cathy has been an avid fitness enthusiast and yoga practitioner for more than 30 years, with a personal connection to Vinyasa flow, but the closest studio where she could practice Vinyasa was 40 minutes away. Her goal two years ago was to bring all the powerful benefits of a quality yoga program, accessible to all fitness levels, into her own community where she could practice and share her passion for yoga. She exceeded her dream, with her classes frequently filled to capacity and her clientele absorbing her positive, light-hearted energy. Her students range in age from 20 to her oldest student, who was 100 years old as of May. Last year, Cathy saw another need within her community when some of her senior students approached her with concerns about the floor work involved in class. She acquired additional training in Yoga for Seniors and Yoga Therapy in Asheville, N.C., and came home to create Rock Your Chair Yoga/Sculpt, a wellrounded yoga and fitness program at the Waushara-Wautoma Senior Center geared specifically to seniors. Cathy recognizes

that all people are young, vibrant, funloving, and adventure seeking, regardless of age. Additionally, Cathy teaches Yoga Fusion at Club TEAM fitness center in Wautoma, mixing Vinyasa flow, Pilates and Yoga/ Sculpt available to all levels. With her love of adventure and the outdoors, she is expanding her offerings to include Yoga for Sports Conditioning and additional outdoor yoga adventure workshops and retreats. A challenge, not unique to a small community, is the perception that yoga is solely a meditative, sitting practice. Cathy loves opening the minds of all athletes to the cross-training opportunities of yoga for strength, core work, endurance, balance, focus, breath and coordination. As an athletic person herself, she values adding yoga to a training regime to advance to a new level and stay in the game injury-free and with vitality. Cathy is excited to further demonstrate this integration in an upcoming retreat titled Life is a Beach Aug. 12-13 hosted at Camp Lakotah, Wautoma.www.naturespathwaysonline.com

All things are possible; remember, age is only a number and always look to your heart, the very core of your spirit.happiness and balance lie within.(www.innersunyogastudio.com/summerretreat.html.) She and Deb Sommerhalder, owner of Inner Sun Yoga of Oshkosh, will team to produce their second yoga and wellness retreat. Their successful January 2011 SNOGA event sold out fast integrating snowshoeing, yoga and other activities. This is another example of bringing greatness to a rural community, for the betterment of all who participate. For Cathy, this is just the beginning. She sees a window a light that really gets her excited for the future and its opportunities, happiness and wellness. She wishes to expand her retreat and adventure opportunities, while continually appreciating the natural beauty and simplicity of the outdoor area in her own backyard. All of this is possible through the support of the community at large, the local Chamber of Commerce organization, the local establishments working together, a network of wellness, energy practitioners, musicians, and the like coming together, and most notably her loving husband, David. Cathys positive mind-set and experience provides her clients faith when there is doubt, love when there is fear and an opportunity for a longer, happier life when there are limitations. The goal she aspires to for all is that of transformation. All things are possible; remember age is only a number and always look to your heart, the very core of your spirit.happiness and balance lie within. When you discover balance in your life through the powerful integration of body, mind and spirit you can take yourself to new heights and literally learn to expand your wings and take flight. (Cathy Favelle, LE, RYT, TAP;

Local chamber of commerce offices are excellent resources for discovering wellness treasures in all communities, large and small. According to www.discoverwisconsin.com, Wisconsin is becoming a bicycling mecca with its Rails to Trails program and other bike trails across the state. How coconut oil can benefit your pet

W

hen many of us think of coconuts, we think of tropical islands in faraway places, suntan lotion and pina coladas. But oil made from coconuts may be an amazing health food for both our 2-legged and 4-legged family members. According to the Coconut Research Center (www.coconutresearchcenter.org/), coconut (cocos nucifera) oil has been used to treat everything from abscesses, asthma, baldness, bronchitis, bruises, burns, colds, constipation, cough and much more. Reported to be anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic, its said to increase immunity and help fight off many illnesses ranging from cancer to dental cavities. It may provide relief from kidney problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, cancer and osteoporosis. Coconut oil can help us look and feel younger by helping to fight

the signs of aging, including wrinkles, age spots and sagging skin, by providing valuable essential fatty acids (EFAs) and fighting free radicals that cause oxidation, degeneration of the cells and aging. In pets, coconut oil has many of the same benefits but instead of promoting fewer wrinkles and healthy skin, pets enjoy healthier skin and a healthier, more beautiful coat. Lower in calories than other saturated fats, coconut oil helps promote healthy weight by increasing energy, promoting healthy thyroid function and metabolic rate. Many of the health benefits of coconut oil are attributed to unique key ingredients: omega fats, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid. Lauric acid is a rare medium-chain fatty acid found in human breast milk and it makes up about 50 percent of coconut oil. Lauric acid supports healthy metabolism. Another key component is in the medium-chain fatty acid. Most of the fats, by far, that we eat as Americans (including fats in meat, dairy products, margarine, vegetable oils and shortening) are from animals or plants and are composed of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA). Coconut oil is made of mostly medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). The MCFAs in coconut oil are what cause it to have so many health benefits. Among other differences, MCFAs are more prone to create energy instead of turning to fat when metabolized.

The benefit to pets:

Taken internally, coconut oil may help promote healthy bones and joints, a healthy metabolism and weight, healthy thyroid function and support against fungi, viruses, bacteria and parasites in dogs, cats and other animals. Coconut oil will also promote healthy skin and a beautiful, lush coat.www.naturespathwaysonline.com

Taken topically, coconut can be used on ears, cuts, wounds, mouth sores, and dry, cracked paw pads. As with anything else you will give your pet, its best to find organic and non-GMO (non-genetically-modified) coconut oil whenever possible. Always choose unrefined oil, also described as virgin oil. The cold-pressed method is best. Look for one that is processed very quickly after its harvested, preserving as much nutrition, freshness and taste as possible. Different brands of coconut oil will have different tastes ranging from a bland taste, to a strong coconut taste, to a more buttery taste. Solid or liquid coconut oil can be added to food at any meal or given between meals. Solid coconut oil can easily be melted quickly in hot water. A general guideline for the optimal dose for dogs is about 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight daily or about 1 tablespoon per 30 pounds, but dont start with these amounts in the beginning! Large amounts of coconut oil given to a dog can cause diarrhea or greasy stools while his body adjusts to the change in diet. Start with small amounts, such as teaspoon per day for small dogs or puppies, and 1 teaspoon for large dogs, or even just a dab if your dogs constitution is sensitive. If your dog seems tired or uncomfortable or has diarrhea, just cut back the amount temporarily. It may also be helpful to give small amounts of coconut oil in divided doses throughout the day. Gradually increase the

amount every few days. Because coconut oil kills bacteria, viruses, parasites, yeasts and fungi, your pet may respond negatively to the detox aspect of taking coconut oil. Signs of detoxing too rapidly may include lethargy, headaches, flu-like symptoms, fatigue and diarrhea. Coconut oil is best given with food. Most dogs like the taste of coconut oil so you wont have trouble feeding it to them. If you apply it to their skin and they try to lick it off, try wrapping the skin in a rag or towel for a few minutes to let the oil soak in before they get a chance to lick it off.Article submitted by Victorias Pet Nutrition Center (www.allnaturalpethealth. com), which offers a wide selection of natural health supplements, natural foods, treats and supplies that pamper pets and improve their quality of life.

Do you have a Sherpa?By Trish Poole Recently I went to Deer Park Buddhist Center. It is a beautiful center established in Oregon, Wis., by people committed to practicing Buddhism within the tradition developed by Tibetan spiritual masters and scholars. It is named after the place near Benaras, where Buddha Shakyamuni gave his first teachings after attaining enlightenment. While I am not committed to Buddhism, I like to visit very spiritual places both here in Wisconsin and

overseas. We have many such places in Wisconsin; Aztalan State Park, Our Lady of Good Help, Deer Park and many more. When I visit these types of places I will often have dreams about them before and after my visit. I am a lucid dreamer, which means that when I am dreaming I can

enter my dream and actively participate in it. It is something I have done since my college years and is like dream yoga, which was practiced as early as the 8th century by Tibetan Buddhists; during dream yoga the dreamer maintains full waking consciousness while in the dream state.

In my dream last night, a Yoga master was teaching me a few things and asked me if I had a Sherpa. I wasnt sure what a Sherpa was. He suggested I engage one and perhaps share the idea of engaging one with others. Then he went on to explain more about energy healing. Ive learned that during my lucid dreams when I am connecting with someone I am unfamiliar with, it is best for me to just be aware and do what I can to take the information in. After I awaken I can write down what was discussed and look up words I do not know or recognize. If I get too excited about the information I am hearing, I will end up waking myself out of the state, so after what seemed an eternity of more information about the energy healing and the temple, I woke up with the word Sherpa on my mind. In looking it up I found that the Sherpa people live in the Himalayas and that they are considered the experts in navigating those mountains, especially well-known Mt. Everest. So clearly he was using the word Sherpa as a sort of metaphor for teacher or guide. Of course! He was encouraging me to

engage someone who has walked the path before me. Its not brain surgery, but it is a worthwhile consideration to be sure. If there is someone who has already worked through the difficult passages and knows a way to make them easier or a safer way to pass through them, it stands to reason that I engage them or at least align with their energy to gain insight into how to address whatever the challenge may be. Over the years I have had a variety of wonderful and inspiring mentors or Sherpas and am so grateful to them. Do you have a Sherpa, or maybe a few? Remember to engage them, get their input. Your Sherpa can accelerate your learning curve and

facilitate difficult situations. We are all here on the planet for one another. Each of us has something special and unique to teach and share. I know some of you will be wondering if I mean our spirit guides. Our loved ones whove crossed over? Who? To those of you who would wonder that, I would say, yes, all of them. We have a family of love and light, whether they are in physical form or not, we are always connected.Patricia Trish Poole, CH, EFT-CC, has been providing hypnosis and energy healing private sessions and classes for 13 years. Why we love OprahBy Nancy Freier Oprahs last show just aired and I am bursting at the seams to pay tribute to her and what shes become to so many people. The quotes are excerpted from Oprahs love letter from The Oprah Winfrey Show Finale that aired on May 25. What the world needs now is someone, or something a vision bigger than ourselves to believe in. For 25 years, Oprah did that very well. She captured our attention by spotlighting our problems and either solved them, or made us feel like we were not the only ones experiencing them. She entertained us. She made us laugh. She made us cry, and she made us look at life in a uniquely Oprah way. Underneath it all was a common thread that bound us together for an hour, for 4,561 days of our lives that she took to the airwaves. It was her spiritual nature that shined through everything she did. The glow attracted us. She became a beacon of light in a world of people in need of a leader of truth. For 25 years she was that idol, that shining star. People came on her show broken, abused, lost and looking for

help. She turned on the stage lights and turned on our lights. It was clear to me that she tuned in and listened to her inner voice through all of it. As I write this, I reflect on her show and wonder why so many people love Oprah so much and for so long. I believe thats because she got it and then she became a mirror for us. In that love letter to her viewers, Oprah said, Soon after I started the show, something shifted for me... Something in me connected with each of you in a way that allowed me to see myself in you and you in a professional designer coming into your home or office. me. I became your surrogate to ask the She rearranges what you have to help you get what you want questions, deliver the answers, learn, grow, without spending a fortune. expand my thinking, challenge my beliefs and the way I looked at the world. You are responsible for the energy that you create for yourself, and youre responsible for the energy that you bring to others.to know what sparks the light in you so that you, in your own way, can illuminate the world... My great wish for all of you who have allowed me to honor my calling through this show is that you carry whatever youre supposed to be doing, carry that forward and dont waste any more time. Start embracing the life that is calling you and use your life to serve the world. Nobody but you is responsible for your life. It doesnt matter what your mama did; it doesnt matter what your daddy didnt do... You are responsible for the energy that you create for yourself, and youre responsible for the energy that you bring to others. People often ask me, What is the secret of success of the show? How have we lasted 25 years? I non-jokingly say, My team and Jesus. Because nothing but the hand of God has made this possible for me... I know Ive never been alone, and you havent either. And I know that that presence, that flow some people call it grace is working in my life at every single turn. And yours, too, if you let it in. Its closer than your breath, and it is yours for the asking.

I have felt the presence of God my whole life. Even when I didnt have a name for it, I could feel the voice bigger than myself speaking to me, and all of us have that same voice. Be still and know it... In a nutshell, spirituality is all about recognizing that inner voice, turning up the volume and following it to live our passion. Oprah led us to this. Now we must find our own stage and shine our Light. Thank you, Oprah, for bringing us to this moment. This is why we love her.Nancy Freier is a professionally-trained Essential Feng Shui consultant and spiritual healer. Her passion is helping people live a happier, more fulfilling life. Average Jane rides the busRecently, I set out on an adventure. For one week, I decided to park the car and ride Valley Transit. I knew I would save money by not driving, but I had no idea I would meet so many interesting people during my bus travels. I had a few questions, too. Namely, how do I get where I need to go? Im not great at deciphering maps so I was happy to find out Valley Transit had a Google trip planner on its Web site. Ive used Google countless times to get driving directions and was happy to learn I could do the same thing with my bus trips. I started with my trip to work. The Google link on Valley Transits site gave me all the information I needed to take my trip. I simply entered my home address, my destination and the time I wanted to arrive at work. Within seconds I had walking directions to my bus stop, the time the bus would arrive, which bus I needed to transfer to and walking directions from my bus to work. It even compared my bus cost to driving. For this trip, I paid a cash fare of $1.80 and received a free transfer to my connecting bus. Driving would have cost me $3.63. I discovered a bonus while on the busthey have free Wi-Fi! My trip to work was a bit longer by bus than driving, but the bus was more economical and I could use my time usually spent driving for more fun things, like buying music on iTunes with the free Wi-Fi service on board. By my second day, I discovered that I could save even more money by purchasing a 10-Ride Ticket. They also had 30-Day Passes and Day Passes available. I continued the week taking the bus to work, the mall and even the grocery store. Weve all heard the rumors about empty buses, but I have to say, many of the routes I rode, particularly during the peak times in the morning and evening, were very full. I thoroughly enjoyed my week using Valley Transit, but it was the people I encountered on the bus who made the biggest impression. From the helpful and courteous bus drivers to the passengers themselves, I learned that the bus is truly a community. When someone who is usually on the bus isnt, other riders ask about them. They have conversations about summer plans, school, debate about whether or not the Brewers will have a good season and other topics. There were people on the bus because they had no other form of transportation and there were others who, like me, chose to leave their car at home. Had I not taken the bus I wouldve missed meeting the rider with a huge smile who tells everyone, Hey, do me a favor? Have a great day! Ive decided to continue riding the bus at least five times a month. With a little planning, its easy and with Wi-Fi on board, its fun. But its the people I met that most make me want to keep riding. And, the money I save will help support my soy vanilla latte addiction. For more information on Valley Transit, visit www.myvalleytransit.com or call 920.832.5800.

Is a gluten-free diet what youve been waiting for?By Dan Stearns What could be the difference between feeling great vs. feeling run-down and even depressed? Can you believe it might just be gluten? Gluten, the protein found in wheat, rye and barley, is essentially indigestible for individuals with Celiac Disease, a condition in which gluten is treated like an invader by the immune system, resulting in damage to the intestines, low energy levels and emotional ups and downs. In fact, the authors of a recent study concerning Celiac Disease concluded that an estimated 2 million people may have the disease and not even realize it. In this research, headed by Dr. Katri Kaukinen, 3,031 people with relatives that had the disease (but considered themselves symptomfree) were randomly selected to go on a gluten-free diet or stick with their normal diet that contained gluten. Those eating a gluten-free diet felt better much better. So great was their improvement in gastrointestinal health and overall wellness, that 85 percent of the participants wanted to continue their gluten-free diet. There are also lots of people who dont have full-blown Celiac Disease, but who have some level of gluten sensitivity. Therefore, more people are interested in eliminating gluten. It can certainly be a challenge, since gluten is an ingredient that shows up in unlikely products, like salad dressing and ketchup. We see a tremendous difference in the health of people who have even moderate gluten sensitivities, says Debra Lemerond, owner and manager of Caffe Naturally, a Green Bay restaurant that specializes in organic, gluten-free meals. Healthy food should taste amazing. I think that our customers are surprised that gluten-free can taste so good. Plus, we want people to have a worry-free experience. Unfortunately, most restaurants prepare gluten-free entrees in kitchens

where gluten is present most of the time, but we are truly a gluten-free restaurant, so there is no potential contamination with gluten. This is really important to a lot of people on a gluten-free diet. Some of the problems with gluten may go back to the fact that historically, humans have only been cultivating gluten-rich grains for a very short time. We see people who begin to follow the caveman diet, and focus on proteins, healthy fats, berries, nuts and other more traditional foods show a dramatic improvement in their health, Lemerond says. Plus, if you still want to get some grains, there are more options out there than most people imagine. One of these options is sprouted grain breads that are rich in nutrients and fiber, but not in the problematic gluten proteins that can cause allergy-like reactions. Another option is to bake your own breads with traditional grains like amaranth, brown rice flour and tapioca flour. For people with Celiac Disease, the one sure way to control symptoms is to avoid gluten. But there can be many instances of accidental gluten ingestion causing inflammation. There are supplements that can help, including high-AKBA (acetyl-11-keto- B-boswellic acids) boswellia extract which is especially helpful for reducing inflammation throughout the body, including the digestive tract. Combine this with a highly-absorbable curcumin extract, and youll be able to reduce the irritation in your intestines that can occur no matter how vigilant you are with your diet. Experts advise to look for a curcumin that has been micronized and blended with turmeric oils because curcumin is notoriously hard to absorb. In fact, this special form is absorbed and retained in the

bloodstream up to 10 times more effectively than a curcumin 95 percent extract, so its worth it to find the right Boswellia-Curcumin combination. Additionally, probiotics can make a big difference. Top probiotics include Lactobacillus acidophilus, a fairly common probiotic with decades of research supporting its digestive benefits, and Bifidobacterium longum, bifidum and lactis are also a good bet. Combining your probiotic intake with fructooligosaccharides (FOS) that act as a food for the beneficial bacteria is a good way to help them colonize faster. Also consider a deglycyrrhizinated licorice extract, commonly known as DGL. Traditionally, DGL has been available in a chewable form, but there are newer clinically-studied versions that are encapsulated and work at lower doses around 300 mg. When you take this DGL blended with probiotics, it really provides soothing relief (and healing effects) for the gut. There is a life after going gluten free, and its probably the one youve wanted to have for a long time. It can be a challenge, no doubt. There may be times when youve ingested gluten but not realized it, until you notice symptoms. But by choosing healthy, gluten-free foods, with some supplemental back-up, youll have more energy, rid yourself of irritating (and sometimes debilitating) gut symptoms, and feel more emotionally balanced than you have for a long time. Give gluten-free a try. It may be the diet youve been waiting for.Dan Stearns is an award-winning health and medical writer with a focus on botanical ingredients, whole foods and natural medicine. How to find a wig that works

T

By Mark P. Brettingen his scenario unfortunately hits home for many of us at some point in our lives: the frustration of losing our hair and the psychological aspects that go hand in hand. Hair loss is disturbing as it can greatly affect our appearance, but as important our perception of how we feel others see us. Thinning hair makes us feel older and can become all-consuming. Today, I would like to touch on the topic of one option of replacing ones hair that many women gravitate to: full wigs. There are situations that arise where a wig is indeed the best solution. impulse control disorder where individuals pull out their own hair), radiation treatments to the scalp creating permanent hair loss and occasionally very extensive genetic female pattern hair loss, all create the need for a full wig. There are many options when it comes to wigs. It can be overwhelming as there are many things to consider when choosing a wig. There are inexpensive machinemade wigs, hand-tied wigs, synthetic and human hair wigs, wigs with highlights and wigs with lowlights. It becomes very confusing to the average person. Many think that human hair is the best solution and indeed certain types of human hair are fantastic; however, other types are very coarse, thick and unmanageable. Synthetic wigs vary tremendously as well. Synthetic fibers can appear very shiny and look like they belong on a dolls head. In contrast, other high-end synthetics can easily be mistaken for high-quality, fine, human hair. Wigs need to look good, but they need to fit properly so they are as comfortable as possible. Most wigs have way too much hair left in them, which takes away from the natural appearance desired. A professional that specializes in this area can help you with this challenge and assist you in making the correct decision for your particular desires.

Financial Makeover Challenge winner named Goodwills Outstanding AchieverBy Karen Kramer Participating in the 2011 Money Smart Week Fox Cities Financial Makeover Challenge was a life-altering experience for Melanie Marasch of Combined Locks, and all of her hard work paid off when she was named this years winner. She also received further recognition when named the Outstanding Achiever for June by Goodwill Industries of North Central Wisconsin. She was awarded this honor because, during the four-month Challenge, she worked with a financial counselor from the Financial Information and Service Center (FISC), a program of Goodwill. Thank you so much, Marasch said. This whole experience has changed our lives. Marasch and her 13-year-old son, Bailey, were among the four families honored at a May 6 program at the History Museum at the Castle in downtown Appleton for their participation in the third annual Financial Makeover Challenge. As the winner, Marasch received the first-place cash prize of $3,500. The other three families, who each received a $750 cash prize, included Tracy Buksyk of Neenah, April and Craig Schmidt of Kaukauna, and Barbara and David Lewandoski of Appleton. From December through April, the

participants met with financial counselors from FISC to improve their financial situations. The selection of the winner was based on which family came closest to meeting their financial goals by the April 15 deadline. FISC counselor Dana Berger worked with Marasch throughout the Challenge. Functional training equipment, summer temptations and fitness trackersExpert answers to your health and wellness questions

By Karmen Nenahlo Question: Do you have any thoughts on some of the new functional training equipment on the market things like TRX bands for example? Answer: Generally speaking, Im a fan of TRX bands and other pieces of functional training equipment. Things like TRX, the ViPR and the Rip-Core FX are taking the fitness industry by storm, and for good reason. Theyre new, innovative, and fun to use. But best of all, theyre functional, which means that using them allows you to mimic traditional daily activities, thereby improving movement, balance, coordination, and strength all at the same time. Thats pretty cool! The only real concern here is that people may not know how to use these pieces of equipment properly, which could potentially result in injury. Theres definitely a learning curve with these products, so its best to watch the experts first. I also strongly recommend working with a trainer until youre

completely comfortable with the training methodology. As always, the goal is to educate yourself so you can get the most out of whatever training you decide to do! Question: How do I manage my food intake during the summer, especially with all the events, get-togethers and goodies seemingly everywhere? Help! Answer: Interestingly enough, the answer depends almost entirely on you. Assuming youre susceptible to sweets and other treats, you really only have three options go all-out and worry about the ramifications later, avoid them at all costs, or take a reasoned approach and indulge to a modest degree. I think most people would argue that the third idea is the best one. After all, why not treat yourself to a few goodies, especially if you can limit yourself to one or two here and there. And dont forget to continue with your workouts during this time as well. Restricting foods that you truly enjoy will only increase your cravings for them, and make for an unhappy holiday season. Bottom line it comes down to choice, and you can choose to make healthy decisions or not, but you have to be realistic. Keep variety, moderation, and

balance in mind, and reward yourself for being active all year long! Question: Several friends are using Web sites to track their nutrition and fitness, and theyre trying to get me to do the same. Do you think these health and wellness sites are worth the time, money and effort? Answer: Ultimately, it depends on the individual. However, research has proven that consistent monitoring and added accountability can pay off in the long run when youre looking to make lifestyle changes. This can come in many forms, but one of the most popular these days is certainly through the use of web sites. They can be a great tool as you try to change your behaviors, and may be just what you need to maintain your motivation. There are a number of options out there, from basic nutrition or fitness tracking sites to others that offer a wide variety of capabilities in all areas of health and wellness. I have to admit that Im biased when it comes to this discussion. Anytime Fitness has created one of the most progressive, comprehensive, and fun Web sites to use if youre looking to facilitate your own health and wellness. Its called Anytime Health (anytimehealth.com)! The site has a diet tracker, an activity tracker, a workout planner that uses over 300 high-definition videos, as well as a robust community with a Q&A section, support groups, a contest page and a site blog. And these features are just the tip of the iceberg. If you get a chance, check it out. You can sign-up for a free account that gives you somewhat limited access, and if you like what you see, you can join for a nominal yearly fee.Karmen Nenahlo is with Anytime Fitness, the worlds largest 24/7 co-ed fitness franchise. Whats the value of a penny?

By Charles Schmalz he road to financial success is paved with pennies. Although a penny may seem insignificant today, its been said that the road to financial ruin begins with as little as a 2 penny difference. If you earn $1 and spend $.99, youre OK. But, spend $1.01 and youre heading for trouble. Thats the 2-penny difference. No new economic theory beats this old favorite: a penny saved is a penny earned. As Calvin Coolidge once said, There is no independence quite as important as living

Addressing the root cause of breast pain

B

By Dr. David Janssen reast cancer, the most common type of cancer diagnosed in women, has received considerable attention in medicine. Saving lives, reconstructing the breast and getting patients on the physical and emotional path to recovery have been the highlighted priorities. One area that needs more focus is the subject of nerve health and its connection to post-operative breast pain. Any surgical procedure performed to the breast needs this consideration, especially because of the intercostal nerves located in this area. These nerves send pain and other sensations to the arm from the chest. If they are damaged during surgery, the patient can experience chronic pain.

Breast pain may interfere with sexual activity, exercise, social activity and employment.According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, postoperative breast pain is a frequent issue reported by 50 percent of women following a breast procedure. Breast pain may interfere with sexual activity, exercise, social activity and employment. Women can experience nerve damage in any breast procedure. The risk of damage to the nerves seems to be at least as great in lumpectomy (partial removal of the breast) procedures as in mastectomy (full removal of the breast). Regardless of procedure performed, the surgeon needs to make every effort to best manage the nerves so the patient has the best possible outcome. In the case of mastectomies followed by reconstruction, the nerve pain is called post-mastectomy pain syndrome (PMPS). Post-mastectomy pain is also caused by damage to intercostal nerves. These nerves exit through the muscles of the chest wall, and provide sensation to the breast, shoulder and upper arm. These nerves may be cut by the surgeon in the process of removing lymph nodes if special consideration is not given to nerve health. However, even if the nerve is carefully preserved, some patients still have pain. There have been clinical studies performed world-wide on nerve health. The conclusion is that nerve preservation may decrease postoperative arm sensory disturbance and pain for stage I, II and III breast cancer patients. It should be noted that post-mastectomy pain syndrome can also be caused by a neuroma (abnormal tissue growth). Neuromas can form whenever peripheral nerves are severed or injured, causing pain and sensitivity. Chronic breast pain may impact a healthy recovery process. Non-surgical treatments for post-mastectomy pain syndrome include medication, physical therapy, acupuncture, massage or hypnosis. Today, more board-certified plastic surgeons have significant training and experience in nerve-sparing and nerve-connection techniques. As trained micro surgeons, plastic surgeons are able in some cases to micro dissect traumatized nerves and improve pain by manipulating the nerve end. If you have post mastectomy pain in a highly localized area, consider seeing a plastic surgeon with experience in managing post-operative breast pain. In some cases, surgical treatment to block nerves that are causing pain may be the best option. If you or someone you know is experiencing breast pain, please remember to consider nerve health. Be your own best advocate, do your research and ask a lot of questions.Dr. David Janssen is a board-certified plastic surgeon with Fox Valley Plastic Surgery, based in Oshkosh. Using hyperbaric oxygen therapy during cancer treatmentsBy Angela Saunders Cancer is such a frightening word, but it can absolutely terrify us when linked with someone we love. When it strikes, there is a lot to consider. How advanced is the cancer? What are your treatment options? Which treatment should you ultimately go with? Will it be all right to combine different types of treatments? What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy? Since the 1600s, doctors have been experimenting with forms of hyperbaric medicine. Modern-day treatments, developed by the military for diving operations, helped scuba divers recover from decompression sickness and air embolism. Since then, hyperbaric treatments have been used in hospitals for the treatment of such

things as burns and carbon monoxide poisoning. But the benefits of hyperbaric medicine do not stop there. It has been used to alleviate many health issues, including cancer. Can hyperbaric oxygen therapy really help cancer? Note the following comments: I utilize mild Hyperbaric Therapy (mHBT) in all stages of cancer; upon detection, as well as pre- and post-surgery, pre-,

post- and during chemo, and radiation. In fact, if chemotherapy is used in conjunction with mHBT, the chemotherapy dose must be reduced. The mHBT will potentate any primary cancer treatment. mHBT is the best cancer prevention and cancer remission therapy out there, bar none. (Bergeron, Rhett, M.D.) Most doctors are aware of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), even if they seldom prescribe this treatment, because oxygen applied to the body under pressure is approved for use in limited situations such as carbon monoxide poisoning, poorly healed wounds, gas embolism, and decompression illness. Very few physicians, however, are aware that oxygen therapies have far more advanced medical applications that are commonly used in many countries outside the United States. In Russia, Europe, China, Japan and Cuba, among others, oxygen therapies treat a broad range of conditions, such as arthritis, cancer, cerebral palsy, HIV, Lyme disease, optic neuritis, stroke and even multiple sclerosis. (Yutsis, Pavel I., M.D., Oxygen to the Rescue) Why is oxygen used? Disease thrives in an oxygen-deficient environment. Some bacteria, for instance, cannot survive in the presence of abundant oxygen. During hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the increased oxygen dissolves in your blood and circulates throughout your body. Regarding the effectiveness of oxygen in fighting disease, note these comments: applying increased oxygen to diseased cells in the human body revitalizes or changes the cell structure. (Yutsis, Pavel I., MD, Oxygen to the Rescue)

By increasing the oxygen environment to the cancer cells, it makes them less virulent and in many instances destroys them. (Yutsis, Pavel I., M.D., Oxygen to the Rescue) For the past 50 years, we have steadily been fighting cancer, and during that period, researchers and scientists have known that cancer develops in low oxygen environments. (Yutsis, Pavel I., M.D., Oxygen to the Rescue) Lack of oxygen clearly plays a major role in causing cells to become cancerous. (Goldblatt, Harry, M.D., Journal of Experimental Medicine) In all serious disease states we find a concomitant low oxygen stateLow oxygen in the body tissues is a sure indicator for diseaseHypoxia, or lack of oxygen in the tissues, is the fundamental cause for all degenerative disease. Oxygen is the source of life to all cells. (Levine, Stephen, MD, Oxygen Deficiency: A Concomitant to All Degenerative Illness) Due to the health benefits of oxygen, you may decide to take oxygen treatments in harmony with other health-care treatments. It is your decision. Make sure to check with your doctor first, and if your insurance does not cover hyperbaric oxygen treatments, free-standing hyperbaric clinics are available and are typically an economical choice.Green Bay Hyperbarics is a free-standing hyperbaric clinic located in The Aesthetic Spa building at 2372 S. Is your mouth kissable?By William J. Twohig, D.D.S., N.M.D., I.B.D.M. A friend of mine recently shared her story with me. Her daughter was preparing for her junior prom. Her date arrived to pick her up for the evening ahead. As he politely smiled at the girls mother she became concerned. His teeth were covered with plaque and blood was visible between and along the gum tissue of his teeth. As a dentist, she began to think of the bacterial conditions occurring in his mouth. The young couple headed out the front door to their awaiting limousine. As the door closed the beautiful girl received a text message from her mother. Dont you dare kiss him!

Diabetes, heart disease, infertility and aching joints have all been positively linked with bacteria and viruses originating in your mouth. As health-care providers and dentists, we have been trained to immediately think of decay-causing bacteria and periodontal disease (gum disease). Both of these common infections are the result of bacteria, viruses, fungi and others. We have also known for years that the bacteria, viruses and fungi in your mouth do not just remain in one place. There is just one cell thickness between them and the rest of your body. Once an infection is present, a simple cut or puncture to your tissues while eating and these bugs are off to the races. They manifest throughout your body to find another place to do their damage. Diabetes, heart dis
