A REPORT ON NDDC/SPDC SKILL DEVELPMENT TRAINING FOR RURAL WOMEN

IN THE NIGER DELTA REGION FROM 4TH JUNE TO 13TH JULY 2012

INTRODUCTION

UFORO was one of the lucky organisations selected to partner with Niger Delta Development Commission

(NDDC) and Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in training rural women from the Niger Delta

Region in various vocations. The training commenced on Monday, 4th June 2012, with twenty six (26) rural

women from Akwa Ibom State. The trainees were selected by NDDC after they had duly applied, were

interviewed and briefed on the modalities and the benefits of the programme.

We participated in four (4) different skill areas, namely: tailoring; hat and beads making; interior

decoration/soft furnishing, and photograph/videography. Trainees were admitted into the skill area of their

interest. The training lasted for five (5) weeks.

TAILORING

Between 2006 and 2011, more than one hundred youth, mostly women from rural areas, selected from all the

Local Government Areas in Akwa Ibom State has been trained in four consecutive batches by UFORO in

tailoring and garment designing. We were therefore in our comfort zone when seven (7) young women from

the Niger Delta region of Nigeria were selected by NDDC/SPDC and posted to UFORO to be trained for five (5)

weeks on tailoring. Though the training period set by the sponsors was short, UFORO set up a strategic plan

toward achieving her objective of equipping the trainees with the basic knowledge of sewing. At the end of the

five week period, the following achievements were recorded:

The trainees were able to master their sewing machines, know how to maintain them, make

pattern designs and sew straight lines;

They were able to take measurement and also cut without any assistance;

Page 4: NDDC/SPDC SKILL DEVELOPMENT TRAININGnecklaces e.g. beads with spacer, spiral beads, illusion beads, baby beads, single line stringing beads, and double line stringing beads etc. Below

They were knowledgeable about different designs for different body sizes, how to match materials

with different designs as well as obtain a good understanding of colour combination;

They were also able to design and make baby wears, different styles of skirts and shirts, burst skirt

and blouse and different styles of gowns.

It is important to state here that the students achieved a great deal in just five weeks, this was due to the

passion they all have for sewing, but they still need to learn more and its therefore recommended that more

opportunity be given to them for further training.

The following are some of the pictures from the tailoring section:

BEADS AND HAT MAKING

Hat making is another skill area in which UFORO has been training young women over the years. In

2011, UFORO successfully trained more than forty (40) women in the art of hat making and today they

are earning a living from it. When NDDC/SPDC skill development in beads making came, UFORO saw it

as another opportunity to equip the trainees with skills that can sustain them wherever they find

themselves. A total of thirteen (13) students registered for the beads and hat making training, and prior

to this period none of them had any idea about these crafts. However they came with a strong zeal to

learn. Consequently, at the end of the five (5) weeks period, UFORO was able to achieve the following:

The trainees were able to identify and source for materials/accessories needed for beads and

hat making and designs;

They were also able to identify and operate tools used in both beads and hat making;

They were knowledgeable about different designs for different product as well as different

kinds of beads and beads making techniques;

Page 7: NDDC/SPDC SKILL DEVELOPMENT TRAININGnecklaces e.g. beads with spacer, spiral beads, illusion beads, baby beads, single line stringing beads, and double line stringing beads etc. Below

They were also knowledgeable on taking measurement and cutting materials to desired hat

designs and shapes, different dying materials and processes, spraying and folding and

moulding materials to designs;

They were able to understand sewing and gumming technique and also have a fair knowledge

of colour combination;

They were able to make different designs of dressing hat;

They were also able to make different designs of beaded bags, belts, bangles, earrings and

necklaces e.g. beads with spacer, spiral beads, illusion beads, baby beads, single line stringing

beads, and double line stringing beads etc.

INSPECTIONS

In the course of the five week training period, inspection was an inherent part of the training program, and

therefore NDDC/SPDC hired a group of consultants who came from time to time to inspect the progress of the

trainees. At such visits, they spent time to interact with the trainees in order to assess the areas of challenges and

improvements. The consultants who covered UFORO were Mr Anthony U. Idung of Maryville Technical Services

Limited, Plot 309 Old Refinery Road, Elelenwo, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Dr. Dorothy Thompson and Dr. E.

Akpanuko of TFL, Uyo

CONCLUSION

The five (5) weeks training was rounded up on 13th July 2012, with a low keyed closing ceremony where the

trainees were advised and encouraged Chief Executive Officer of UFORO, Chief/Mrs. Imo Isemin to make good use

of the opportunity given to them by NDDC/SPDC. She admonished them to be like the good servant in the scripture

who received a talent from his master, and then made good used of it. The CEO concluded by telling the trainees to

reciprocate the good gesture shown to them by NDDC/SPDC by putting to good use the skills they have learnt in

UFORO.

Immediately after the brief by the CEO, the trainees were taken to a colourful closing party that featured a dance

competition and a beauty parade, where the winners went home with handsome prizes. General and group

photographs were taken by different skill areas to showcase what they have done during the training period. They

were finally treated to a sumptuous meal.

Final word from the CEO to Trainees A vote of thanks by a trainee Trainees on the dance floor
