LETTERfrom theVICEPRESIDENT

Cool  weather  and  high  water  made  a  slow  start  to  our boating  season.  Our  June  events  had  to  be  canceled.  But Rich and Julie Schank provided great hospitality and food for the July Directors meeting. A Big Thank You to both of them for a job well done, again.

The Columbus run was a big success with over 100 boats running  up  the  Platte  River.  Always  nice  to  see  boaters from other states coming to enjoy our natural resources. We Thank them for making the trip.

For  the NAA  1st Annual  Sandbar  Pot  Luck was  a  very good  turnout.  Thanks  to  everyone  for making  a  day  filled with frog jumping, big sling shots and lots of food to share. Really  appreciate  the  frog  wrangling  skills  of  those  who brought  extra  frogs  /  toads  so  everyone  could  join  in  the jumping contest.

As we come to another end of our boating season be safe and respectful of others.

Sincerely,

Jay KernNAA Vice President

LETTERfrom the PRESIDENT

WOW! What  a  short  and wet  summer. With  fall  starting  a week  from  Tuesday,  it’s  been  a  very  short  airboating  season. With all the rain in late May and June, we had to either cancel or postpone three events.

With  the weather cooperating  in July and early August, we were able to have some very good events; I was unable to make the Columbus Run, but I was told that there were approximately 125 airboats present.

The next weekend (August 2 – 3) was Thunder on the Loup. It was the biggest turnout yet in the 11 years that Tom Dinsdale has  put  on  the  event. Bill Davis  told me  that  there were  186 R.V.s and 50 tent campers. He estimated the total attendance for Saturday and Sunday to be around 8 to 10 thousand people.

The River Rats Jamboree the next Friday and Saturday was also a big success.  I attended on Friday and turned  in what I thought would be the winning raffle ticket for the Jeep, but came up short, so I’ll try again next year.

The  next  Saturday,  August  16,  was  Mark  Ulferts’  fishing tournament  on  the  Loup  River.  There  were  10  boats  and approximately 25 – 30 fishermen. It was great fun and we had a terrific fish fry afterward.

The following Saturday, August 23, we had the Sand Bar Pot Luck by Uncle Jerry’s Cabin, which had been rescheduled from June 14 because of the high water. What a great turnout! There were 56 boats and everyone brought a lot of food — enough to fill four folding tables. There were lots of things for the kids and parents  to  participate  in,  including horseshoes, water  balloon shoots and the frog jumping contest, in which there were 27 kids entered in two age groups. It was great to see the little kids and their parents having a great and fun time together.

I  would  like  to  offer  Special  Thanks  to  Dax  Daulbert  for bringing the medallions for the kids. Every kid who participated received a USA medallion. THANK YOU, DAX!

In closing, I want to wish everyone a safe, happy and fun fall, airboating, fishing, hunting and football season.

GO BIG RED!!!

Sincerely,

Darrell StarksNAA President

FROM your EDITORGreetings and am hopeful all members and friends had a

great  time dodging  the  sprinkles we’ve had  these past  few months. Hope everything was safe for all and we got to enjoy some  of  the  sunny  days.  We  all  need  to  be  sure  that  you inform us  of updates and  corrections  to  email and mailing addresses,  as  well  as  phone  numbers  changes.  We  always seem  to  have  some  newsletters  returned  as well  as  emails that are undeliverable. If you are not receiving newsletters or emails, you probably couldn’t read this either could you! But if you know some one that mentioned they are not getting their correspondence, please notify us for them so we can make the needed adjustments.  I  am a  terrible mind  reader  so do not hesitate to help me out. Please advise us with anything else we can be helpful with, or should you have suggestions for us please feel free to send a message.

AIRBOATER’SCODE of ETHICS1.  I will respect the rights of all users of the recreational waterways of the state, on public waters

and on adjacent private property.

2.  I will be considerate and courteous at public vessel launch ramps and docks. In an effort to not delay others, I will launch and retrieve my vessel promptly.

3.  I will always operate at a safe speed in posted “No Wake” zones.

4.  When approaching the shoreline, I will be especially aware of swimmers and other water vessels near the shoreline.

5.  I realize that my vessel’s equipment, ability, weather conditions, and especially other vessel traffic should determine my vessel speed.

6.  In case of an emergency, I will volunteer assistance.

7.  I am aware that my vessel creates air propeller wash and will use idle speed near the shoreline and in close proximity to boat launch ramps.

8.  I will ensure that all passengers in my vessel are equipped with safety equipment, including life vests, ear protection, eye protection, and required safety equipment.

9.  I will avoid unnecessary disturbance of wildlife and will not enter posted “No Trespass” areas.

10.  I will pay close attention to the engine sound levels that my vessel may create and be aware of how others on vessels and on the shoreline will react to it.

11.  I will not litter and will bring back all trash. I will be careful in handling my fuel.

12.  I will not interfere with or harass others. I realize that people will  judge all airboaters by my individual actions.

NAA President, Darrell Starks

The  NAA  was  formed  in  May  1995.  Its  purpose  is  to preserve  and  protect  the  rights  of  airboat  owners,  by working with public and state agencies. We also need to be good stewards of the river and surrounding land, encourage safe and responsible  recreation. Protect  its watershed  from degradation and increase the community’s appreciation of its natural beauty.

DefendOurRights:  We have a lobbyist for the association to watch for changing legislation.

PromoteandEnhancegoodStewardship: Encouraging others to join the NAA and always trying  to improve our organization.

EncouragingSafeandResponsibleRecreation:  We look out for each other and assist boats and passengers in trouble. Make sure everyone gets home safe to boat another day.

ProtectWatershedfromDegradation:  Be mindful of what you put into the river. Keeping our waters clean and clear of debris and trash will keep our rivers beautiful. Working to protect banks and property is a challenge but worth the fight to preserve our lands next to the river.

CommunityAppreciationfortheRiver’sNaturalBeauty:  By bringing our family and friends to the river for a fun outing teaches others of our states great resources, while just simply out for a good time together. Teaching our children who will be the next generation of boat owners ensures that the tradition carries on.

The  purpose  of  the  NAA  is  to  be  good  guardians  for  the rivers we love.
