Live Rust gets the most props, but if you're looking for a live document of Neil Young and CrazyHorse at their speaker-shredding, stage-scorching best, Weld is an absolute must-own. Fired upby the success of 1990's Ragged Glory, and outraged by the eruption of the Gulf War, Youngand his cohorts attacked their 1991 tour like men on a suicide mission. An angry, gunshot-lacedversion of Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" is the closest thing here to an acoustic reverie; the restof the album offers up staggeringly intense electric versions of Neil songs both current ("Crimein the City," "Love to Burn," "Rockin' in the Free World") and classic ("Cortez the Killer,""Cinnamon Girl," "Powderfinger"). The back-cover photo of a disheveled Young cradling abroken-stringed guitar pretty much says it all--no one could have unleashed a sonic onslaughtthis brutal, and emerged unscathed from the experience. --- amazon.com

released as a limited edition three-disc set entitled Arc-Weld, with the Arc portion being a singledisc consisting in its entirety of a sound collage of guitar noise and feedback, with equallydiscordant backing by the Horse, undoubtedly[opinion] influenced by Young's choice of SonicYouth as his opening act. Arc has since been released as a separate title.

Weld consists of rock and roll songs by Young and Crazy Horse, duplicating seven that hadappeared on either Rust Never Sleeps or Live Rust from twelve years earlier. It also echoesthose albums as Young, in both cases having spent most of a previous decade pursuingdifferent musical avenues, returned to straightforward rock and roll via the acclaimed RaggedGlory album with Crazy Horse, then celebrating that return with an accompanying multi-disc livedocument and concert film. An interesting cut on this album is Young's "Gulf War" version ofBob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind", which had air raid sound effects.

Neil Young claims that, while mixing this album, he permanently damaged his hearing. Therewas a brief release of the concert featuring video footage on VHS, but there was no DVDrelease. The VHS tape is now an out-of-print collector's item.
