How he got his surname Mandela This is the name of the clan of which Nelson Mandela is a member. A clan name is much more important than a surname as it refers to the ancestor from which a person is descended. Madiba was the name of a Thembu chief who ruled in the Transkei in the 18th century. It is considered very polite to use someones clan name. His career Mandela studied first for a Bachelor of Arts at the Fort Hare University but was forced to leave before graduating. Then, later in life while in prison, Mandela studied for a Bachelor of Laws from the University of London's External ProgrammeIn his spare time Nelson Mandela studied law so he could help black people and become a lawyer

His career 2 After university he joined the African National Congress (ANC)At first they protested calmly against apartheid, apartheid was where the white were allowed everything and the black were only allowed to be places the white werent but after a while they protested violently when they were ignored by the government Nelson was arrested and put into prison where he was sentenced to life imprisonment on Robben IslandHis prison number was 46664He spent 18 years on Robben Island and was transferred to Pollsmoor Prison in March 1982 and was freed in 1990 and ANC (African National Congress) was unbannedIn 1994 he was elected president of South Africa and resigned for a peaceful life with his family in 1999

6 questions I would ask Nelson MandelaWhat went through you when you were expelled from university?Did you make any new friends in prison?Which was the best prison Pollsmoor or Robben Island? Were you calm around white people after you came out of prison? Was it lonely in prison? Were you happy when Black people were able to vote and they elected you?
