    recent years our

This win has created camogiehistory for Nenagh and to the girls, their club and mentors. In scenesnot too unlike Wexfords greatsenior win last year, the largeattendance will hardly be envious ofa great Nenagh skilful side who infairness, deserved this win.

Both sides drew their supportelarge numbers, but Nenagh arrin a charged up frame of mindwhich they brought into their pand were determined not todisappoint. Both had their starplayers, but Nenagh were wellbalanced throughout.

tle did Conor O'Donovan thinken he was growing up in Effin, Co

merick, that the town of Nenaghuld provide him with the base forlittering hurling career.nically, he was following in the

otsteps of his uncle Terry Moloney

(himself an All-Ireland winner withTipperary in 1958) who transferredto Nenagh and helped Eire g toNorth victory in 1964 at fullforward. No surprise then that Conor wasborn into a strong hurling culture, where the greatest influences on hishurling career were his fatherPatrick O'Donovan and a nearneighbour Mike Carroll. Immersed inhurling blood, Conor went on to playunderage for Limerick (Conor played

minor against Tipperary), but it washis move to Nenagh that sparkedthe upward curve and he made hisTipperary inter-county debut at U21level poignantly enough againstLimerick (1982) as a strong, skilfuland aggressive centre forward.

Conor made his senior debut forTipperary in a League matchagainst Cork in 1984. In addition towinning All Ireland senior medals in

1989 and 1991, Conor also wonMunster medals in 1987, 1988,1989 and 1991 and a nationalleague medal in 1988. Conors'greatest year was 1987, when heplayed a huge part in bringing theMunster title back to Tipperaryafter the famine years. One of hispersonal memories is the drawn1987 Munster final against Cork inThurles which he rates as his bestgame in the blue and gold.Indicative of his performances that

year was that fact he was awardedTipperary Hurler of the year andGuardian player of the year. 1998was also great year for Conor, although, he ranks the loss of theAll-Ireland final that year as one ofhis major disappointments. While Conor will be remembered inTipperary as an outstandingfullback, he made his senior clubdebut for Nenagh in 1981 againstLorrha at centre forward. For a

number of years he led the forwardline with aplomb whilst his skill and

strength ensured that he wasconsistently one of the clubsleading scorers. A reliable freetaker, Conor showed his versawhen switched to the backlinewhere he continued to performthe highest standard from cenback and then full back. Withohesitation Conor acknowledgeshis greatest honour in a long adistinguished career for the Bwas in captaining the club to wtheir first county final in 1995.

Interestingly, he rates the cousemi-final win that year againsCashel as his best game forNenagh. However, it was a losthe semi-final stage of the NorChampionship in 1989 to Lorrhwhich was his greatestdisappointment in the Nenaghcolours. Conors personal meminclude winning a county juniohurling medal in 2000 followinwhich he retired and his remasporting ambition would be tocoach Nenagh to go the wholeand win and all Ireland club finAs a true "blue" Conor alwaysprepared the night before Tippmatches by discussing ire gchances of winning a North Finwith other members of the irTipperary contingent.

As a player Conor ODonovanbe remembered for his excelleskill and his tight marking in

defence. As a teak tough defenhe was a totally dedicated playwho maintained a high level offitness (ironically many teammrecall that Conors' bestperformances frequently camewhen he was carrying an injurand passion throughout his placareer. His level of consistencyallied to his exemplarysportsmanship mark him out aperson whose name will alway

Here is one of the most unique hurling teams to everemerge from the town. In September 1989 all the altarboys, under the guidance of Fr Pat Cotter, cametogether and took on Loughrea of Galway. They hadpreviously played each other in Galway during thatsummer and here they are pictured on the track fieldin the CBS prior to taking on their Galway opponents ina re-match.
