River Chullos By Varian C. Brandon

River Blossom River Star River Fire All three of the River Chullos were designed using the same twelve colors of yarn. Each hat is knitted in the round starting at the bottom edge. An I-cord binding is added for dimension and to prevent the edges from curling. Motifs in the three patterns differ in complexity getting progressively more complicated from River Blossom to River Fire. Sizes - One size fits most. 21 ½” circumference – not stretched. Materials Yarn: Cascade Yarns 220 Sport – 1 skein each 4002 (A) – Dark Grey 8906 (G) - Aqua 8401 (B) – Light Grey 7818 (H) – Dark Blue 8885 (C) - Plum 8905 (I) – Light Blue 7803 (D) - Raspberry 7824 (J) – Dark Orange 8886 (E) – Dark Purple 7825 (K) – Light Orange 8892 (F) – Teal 8914 (L) – Sage Green Note: Yarn colors are my own and apply only to these garments. Needles: 2 - 24” circular needles - US 4 (3.5mm) OR 1 - set of 4 double pointed needles US 4 (3.5mm) AND 1 - set of 4 double pointed needles US 2 (2.75mm) OR correct needles to obtain gauge and preferred method of circular knitting. Accessories: Stitch markers, stitch holders, blunt-ended tapestry or yarn needle.

Gauge On US 4 (3.5mm) in pattern stitch: 21 sts and 24 rows to 3”. Before starting to knit, read the pattern carefully and make sure to check your gauge. You will thank yourself later. About knitting from charts: Charts are designed to be knitted from right to left, bottom to top. This means starting at the bottom right corner of the chart and working to the left and up. Be sure to note how the stitches relate to each other. An easy way to knit from a chart is to get a page-sized metal tablet with magnets. Place the magnet above the round you are working on and move it up revealing the next round as you progress through the chart. This way, the round you are working on is right below the magnet and you can see the relationship to the completed rounds below. Color changes in the charts provided in these instructions are indicated on the right of the pattern chart. A good practice is to check these changes as you start each round. Tables provided are also designed to be worked from the bottom up and provide a list of the order that chart are knitted. About hat construction: These hats can be constructed two ways. Method One: working the earflaps first and incorporating them into the cast-on edge of the hat. Method Two: constructing the hat and adding the flaps at the end. The advantage of the first method is when the body of the hat is completed; the project is almost finished. Also, the connection between hat and flaps is seamless. The disadvantage is you start your project with the tedious task of knitting stranded work flat. Stranded work is much easier knitted in the round as the right side facing you at all times. The advantage of the second method is you start with the fun of knitting colorwork in the round. You can decide later if you want to add the flaps. The disadvantage is there is a slight join where you picked up the stitches to add on the earflaps. Another option for Method Two is to use a provisional cast-on for the entire hat and then free the stitches to add the ear flaps as well as the I-cord border. Your choice. Instructions for both methods are included in this pattern. Where there is no indication for which method is being described, the instructions apply to both methods.

About increases and decreases: Increases are worked by picking up the bar between the stitches from front to back with the left needle. Then knit this bar through the back loop with the right needle twisting the stitch. This is sometimes called a “make one” increase. Decreases are worked using Knit 2 Together (k2tog), Purl 2 Together (p2tog), Slip Slip Knit (ssk), or Slip Slip Purl (ssp) depending on which row or side of the garment is being worked. Note: Instructions for all three patterns are given as follows: River Blossom [River Star, River Fire]. You may find it helpful to note instructions, charts, and colors relating to your pattern choice with a colored pencil.

Body Method One: Earflaps – With color E [B, H], cast on 11 stitches. Follow Earflap chart for method one for selected pattern. Make increases as indicated.

M – Make increase Place the 31 stitches of each flap on holders. Cast on for body. With color H [F, E], cast on 13 sts ending up with stitches on right needle. Break yarn. Place (do not knit) 1st earflap on right needle (next to original 13 cast on sts) with right side facing you. With color H [F, E], cast on 56 sts onto right needle following first ear flap. Break yarn. Place (do not knit) 2nd earflap on right needle with right side facing you. With color H [F, E], cast on 13 sts onto right needle. 144 sts Method Two: With color H [F, E], cast on 144 sts. Both methods: Work chart 1 [1-1,1-2], starting at bottom right of chart. Join work being careful not to twist. Place marker to indicate beginning of round. Repeat chart stitches to end of round. Continue to follow Chart Repeat Table for selected pattern. You may find it helpful for the larger motifs to place markers in between each repeat. Work to (but not including) chart noted for 1st decrease. Decreases are worked in the first round of this chart.

With color E [A, F], work 3 rounds. Next round: (k2tog) repeat to end. Knit one round. Repeat last 2 rounds 2 more times. 3 repeats (6 rounds) total. 12 sts. Next round: (k2 tog, k1) repeat to end. 8 sts. Break yarn with 4-5 inch tail. Thread tail through blunt-ended needle and draw up remaining stitches. Method 2 – Earflaps: Pick up 31 sts approximately 2.25” on either side of start point on edge of hat. Using Earflap Chart for Method 2 for selected pattern, knit flat (alternating knit and purl rows) decreasing where indicated. Cast off remaining 11 sts. Alternate method: If you used a provisional cast on, release and place all 144 sts on needle. Then divide as follows: from beginning of round, place the next 13 sts on waste yarn or holder. Then the next 31 sts. Then 56 sts. Then 31 sts. Then the remaining 13 sts. Working with the 31 st sections and using Earflap Chart for Method 2 for selected pattern, knit flat (alternating knit and purl rows) decreasing where indicated. Cast off remaining 11 sts.
