FacultyCareerDevelopmentServices(FCDS)inTheWallaceCenter(TWC)continuestodesignanddeliverNewFacultyOrientation(NFO)forallnew,full-timefacultyaspartoftheironboardingtoRIT.NFO2016washeldAugust10-12,aweekearlierthaninpreviousyearsduetothestartofthefallsemesteronAugust22.

TheoverarchinggoalsforNFOinclude:

• Reinforcingfaculty’sdecisiontojoinRITbyprovidingawelcomingandhelpfulfirstexperienceoncampus.

• IntroducingfacultytocriticalinformationthatwillensuresuccessfulassimilationtoRIT--includingtheresourcestheyneedtosucceed.

FCDScoordinatedtheformat,guidedthedesignofmanyofthesessions,andmanagedactivitiesforthe2½dayprogram,partneringwithothersoncampustoensurefacultyreceivedinformationonkeyresourcesneededto“hitthegroundrunning,”theNFOthemeforthethirdyear.

ThefirstdaybeganwithawelcomeaddressfromProvostJeremyHaefnerwherehecovered10tipsforteaching,andstrategiesforresearchandservice.Facultygainedfirst-handinsightfromtheProvostwhodeliveredamessagethatsetthetonefortheirnewacademiccareeratRIT.

Day1continuedwithsessionsfocusedonwork-lifebalance,aswellascandidadvicefacultyneedontopicssuchasworkingwithdeafandhard-of-hearingstudents,andtheimportanceofconnectingwithcolleaguesforsupport,advice,andpotentialcollaborations.ThefirstdayalsofeaturedanetworkinglunchwithSponsoredResearchServices.TheafternoonfeaturedaninspirationalpresentationbyChristineLicata,SeniorAssociateProvost,onthenobleprofessionofteachingandincludedthe“voice”ofstudentsinanewlycreatedvideoexpressingstudentviewsonthepracticeofgoodteaching.Asocialhourwherefacultywereabletonetworkwiththeirnewassociatescompletedtheday.

Day2includedsessionsontheStudentInformationSystem,Starfish(EarlyAlert),RITLibraryLiaisons,TeachingandLearningServices(InnovativeLearningInstitute),andmyCoursessystem.ThedayconcludedwithaCampusResourceFairandfreetimeforfacultytogettheirprofessionalphotostakenbyRITProductionServices,parkingpassesandIDs.Day3consistedofanintroductionoftheProvost’sFacultyAssociates,thebenefitspresentationfromHumanResources,andanopportunitytoindividuallymeetwithHRrepresentatives.TheNFO2016scheduleisavailableinAppendixAandonlineathttp://rit.edu/newfaculty.

Eachyear,changestotheNFOprogramareimplementedinresponsetofeedbackreceived,thechangingdemographicsofthenewfacultypopulation,andcurrentliteratureandresearchrelatedtoonboardingandfacultydevelopment.

BeingmindfulthatnewhiresjoinRITasbothtenuretrackandnon-tenuretrackfaculty,wecontinuetoguideourpresentersindesigningtheirsessionstoensuretheyareinclusiveofallfaculty.Twonewsessionswereaddedin2016:

• RITSurvivalSkills–Apaneldiscussioncoveringskillsfacultymightneedto“survive”inavarietyofconditionsintheirnewcareerwasledbymoderatorChristopherCollison,AssociateProfessor/COS,andAcademicSenateExecutiveChair.“Veteran”facultypanelistsincludedMuhammetKesgin,AssistantProfessor/CAST;AmminaKothari,AssistantProfessor/CLAandDirectorofUndergraduateStudies;DeanaOlles,SeniorLecturer/COS;andMarkOlles,AssistantProfessor/CAST.

RecommendationsforNFO2017

TheFCDSteamwillcontinuetomanageNFOin2017.Wecontinuetoseekfeedbackfromfacultyinordertoimprovetheexperienceforfuturefaculty.Ouruseofanonlineevaluationthepastfewyearshasyieldedveryfewresponses;nextyeartheteamwillconsiderthereturnofpaper,at-eventevaluationstogatherahigherpercentageofrespondents.ThestructureanddesignofthenextNFOwillbeevaluatedtoensurethatournewfacultyacquirethenecessaryknowledgeandskillstobegintheirRITcareer.

AdjunctFacultyOrientation(AFO)

InadditiontoNFO,FCDScollaboratedwithrepresentativesfromILI,RITLibraries,Registrar’sOffice,InstituteAdvising,andTeach2ConnecttohostAdjunctFacultyOrientation(AFO)onAugust4,2016.Thirty-fourparticipantsattended,includingbothnewandcurrentadjunctsinterestedina“refreshercourse.”

AFOisdesignedtoorientnewadjunctfacultytoRITandtosharetheresourcesandservicesavailabletosupporttheirteaching.AFOwillbeofferedagainduringIntersession2017,withadjustmentstovenueandpossiblyanewsessionspecificallytoaddressdeafandhardofhearingstudentsupport.

FCDSwillcontinuetheAdjunctMentoringCommunityGroup,hostingprofessionaldevelopmentandnetworkingactivitiesexclusivelyforRITadjunctfaculty.Thiscommunityofadjunctscomestogethertonetworkandshareconversationaroundteachingintoday’sclassroom,tolearnaboutRITresourcesavailabletothem,andtoprovideguidanceandsupporttoassistwhentheyhaveconcernsorchallenges.

Dean, Student & Academic Services; Karen Beiter, Information & Computing Studies; Ann Hager, Associate Professor, SCB/NTID Support Faculty; Ann Marie Kuntz, Manager, Real Time Captioning/Notetaking; Steve Nelson, Director, Operations, Access Services

An overview of information and resources that provide instructors with classroom teaching strategies that foster collaborative learning among deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing students. A panel discussion will inform new faculty about the key roles and resources to support deaf and hard-of-hearing student success in the classroom. Panelists include RIT and NTID faculty and staff from Access Services and Academic Services, all of whom will provide recommendations to help make instruction more accessible for the deaf/hard-of-hearing student. Panelists will share the roles and expectations of key players in the classroom learning environment (student, faculty, interpreters, captionist, notetaker, etc.) and will share key campus resources for both faculty and students.

We’re confident you will survive in the RIT wilderness but we think it valuable to imagine your road through personal uncharted territory! This segment will cover some skills you might need to “survive” in a variety of conditions. It helps to be ready to face any problem that RIT has to offer! How do you cope with uninterested students, teaching hours that conflict with family commitments, a restricted swimming pool schedule, parking at peak times, tenure expectations, etc.? All RIT class instructors must use the Faculty Center within RIT’s Student Information System (SIS) to enter grades and access their class schedules, class rosters and historic grade rosters. All permanent, non-adjunct faculty have access to Advisor Center as well, which provides a modified view of what students see when they log in to the SIS. Advisor Center serves as a central location that allows you to see a student’s schedule of classes, advisors, holds, course history, unofficial transcript and more.

This session shows faculty how to perform essential tasks in both Faculty Center and Advisor Center.
