NEW MOON ESSENTIALS

DARK MOON DAYS – from the dying balsamic crescent to the appear-ance of the New Moon’s waxing crescent -- is the perfect time to align with your deeper self. A Full Moon pulls energies upward and outward, while the Dark Moon turns energy inward. Introspection is the key, but not always easy in the modern world. To function well you must take time to slow down and rejuvenate. When you don’t get a break, your inner child tries to hide and escape any way it can.

Mark the two days before and after the New Moon on your calendar and think of them as your private retreat. Though you may not be able to step away com-pletely from the world, you can use some of the following tips to create a New Moon ritual that will pay dividends all year long.

1. Unplug. Multi-tasking is a myth under normal circumstances. It is utterly out-of-sync with the energies of a New Moon. While the Moon is dark, take a mini break from social media, email and smartphones. If you can’t unplug completely, limit your connectivity to a certain times each day. By doing one thing at a time, you’ll begin to replenish your brain’s ability to focus (Maybe you’ll like it so much, it will become a habit all month long)!

2. Declutter. You know how good it feels to come home to a clean house? Or go to work to a clean desk? The dark Moon is the perfect time to clear away old distractions. Clear out your physical space, and your virtual space too. Also, if you make this a monthly New Moon ritual, Mercury retrogrades will become a snap!

3. Yoga. Restorative yoga is the name of the New Moon. Yoga poses and routines that allow you to relax deeply are the perfect accompaniment. Anything with forward bends, child’s pose or corpse pose will do the trick. Or ask your personal instructor to design a relaxing, yet recharging, routine for you.

4. Contemplate & Plan. Once your mind and space are clear, now it’s time to decide what you want to focus on for the next month. Choose a monthly theme for your efforts, perhaps even weekly goals. If you’re working on a longer-term project, setting aside long blocks for focused concentration during the Dark Moon can dramatically improve your productivity. The New Moon is also a good time to launch new habits and rituals, if you want them to stick. Plus, if you feel like you’ve got a lot accomplished during the New Moon, you’ll be more in the mood to play when the Moon turns Full again.

5. Use a holistic remedy. The Moon governs our emotional and etheric bodies – the intuitive part of us with which we sense the vibe of things. Holistic remedies such a flower essences, aroma therapy and homeopathy are especially helpful inconjuction with the Moon. Focus and clarity are the goals of a New Moon. For flower essences, investigate clematis, chestnut bud or white chestnut. Nootropic herbs such as brahmi (bacopa mannieri), ashwaganda, tulsi (holy basil), gotu kola or ginko could be a good fit if you feel like you need to strengthen your powers of concentration. If you feel like you need some extra rest, you can also try herbs such as valerian, lemon balm, passion flower or chamomile. Some comlbination of these herbs are often found in herbal tea blends at your local grocery store.

6. Meditate. Whether the Moon is New or Full, meditation is key for tapping into the subtle energies of the cosmic vibe. With so much noise and distraction, we could all use some basic understanding of how our minds work, so we can compensate for the ever-present challenges of modern life. With regular practice, meditation brings calm and emotional self-regulation. In fact, research suggests that it is a far more effective antidote for depression than any pharmaceutical. Of course, this is not a short term solution. But with consistent practice, people report amazing improvements in mood, physical well-being and happiness. When you’re aware of how you think, it becomes easier to direct your attention on whatever you want. In the case of lunar energies, meditation can help you turn distraction or anxiety into peace and tranquility. If you don’t know how to get started, there are a number of good smartphone apps like Calm or Headspace that will point you in the right direction.

7) Make friends with the Moon. Remember, the Moon is here to HELP us, not make us suffer. In fact, without the Moon, we would most likely not be here – literally. The more you work with the Moon, the deeper your relationship will grow, and the more you can manifest together. As you begin to understand Her moods – even Her favorite things – you’ll be able to form a congenial partnership.

Practice these steps, and soon you’ll be looking forward to the New Moon every month! Her fresh wave of energy can blow out the cobwebs, and leave you eager to begin again.
