So, if we ever want to free ourselves from depression, we must FIRST reduce the time spent in our Survival System and increase the time spent in our Thriving System.

1. We need to discover how long we’re currently spending moving back and forth between the two systems, on a daily basis. This is known as your Personal Surviving vs Thriving Ratio.

2. We need to uncover which people, events or situations instantly activate your Survival System. These are called your Personal Survival System Triggers and they will be totally unique to you.

For example:

We may both experience the very same event. I instantly activate my Survival System, but you don’t.

There are no right or wrong triggers. There are simply individual triggers which we must uncover as fast as possible, so we can rapidly eliminate them and stop the disruption to the Ultimate Health-Enhancing Ratio: which is key to truly protecting your body-mind system from falling into depression, over and over again.

Remember, if we can spend the majority of our life operating from our Thriving System (the system which activates our body’s natural healing response), we’ll naturally set ourselves up to thrive and flourish. Whilst protecting our entire body-mind system from depression.

Quick Example…(Refer to template example below)

When you go to bed, mark the hour you got up and the hour you’re going to sleep (and all the hours in between), down the left hand column marked: TIME.

Then, simply write in all the events that occurred throughout your day beside the corresponding hour, which were either:

• Stressful, frustrating, conflictual, hurried or annoying (Enter under Survival System). Or,

• Relaxing, uplifting, calming, joyful or engaging (Enter under Thriving System).

Record each event under the relevant column. Was it a Survival System trigger or a Thriving System trigger?

Now, let’s run through a quick, practical example together.

So, let’s say, Sally starts her day around 6am.

Around 6:00am: She wakes up with huge ‘to-do’ list on her mind. This weighs on her greatly and she instantly starts worrying and stressing about her day ahead. This is a Survival System Trigger.

7:00am:She rushes downstairs to have breakfast. She feels she’s got no time to stop! She gulps down her breakfast and grab her coffee ‘to-go’. Saying goodbye to her husband and children, as she flies out the door. Sally is operating from her Survival System.

8:00am:The train is late. This frustrates her because she hates being late!

These are all Survival System triggers!

So, Sally has been constantly activating her Survival System and releasing all those ‘health-deteriorating’ chemicals into her body-mind system, which is leading her into an unhealthy, ‘dumbed-down’ state. And, this is all before 9am! She hasn’t even arrived at the office yet!

9:00am:Sally’s close work colleague (Rachel) shares some fantastic news which uplifts Sally! This uplifting feeling activates Sally’s Thriving System.

10:00am:Then, Bob ( a difficult colleague) sends a patronising email to Sally. This makes her ‘see red’ and activates her Survival System, once again.

11:00am: Nothing eventful.

12:00pm: Sally has a chilled-out lunch with Rachel and Sarah. This helps her to relax, unwind and laugh! This activates her Thriving System.

1:00pm: Sally has to pick up her bosses car from the mechanics and some a***hole cuts her off on the motorway and nearly crashes into her. This naturally sends Sally into a panic! Her blood pressure rises, she’s struggling to concentrate on the rest of the journey back to the office (note; Sally’s higher-level brain functions will now be ‘switched off’ and her emotional brain will be on high alert, as she just faced a real life-threatening emergency). This is a Survival System Trigger.

2:00pm: Sally finally completed the 3 work-related assignments, she’s been struggling with. Sally feels genuinely proud and relaxed, as she feels a weight has been lifted off her shoulders. This activates her Thriving System.

3:00pm: Nothing eventful.

4:00pm: The train is late - AGAIN! This frustrates Sally and once again, her Survival System is activated.

Of course, you would continue noting down all the events throughout your day, until the time you go to bed.

This is simply about observing and becoming aware of your daily routine, so you can start to see with crystal clear vision - which sections of your day are the most likely to need refining, adapting, changing or completely cutting out altogether to ensure you maintain the Ultimate Health-Enhancing Ratio of 20/80.

I highly recommend you complete this daily, for the next 7 days.

This will give you a complete picture of your average week and help you see how you’re currently moving between your Survival System and Thriving System.

Now, you may be tempted to say: “But, nothing ‘eventful’ happens in my life.” Or, “Everyday is exactly the same for me, so I could enter the same things for all 7 days, right now.”

Events Don’t Have To Be Huge, To Have A Huge Impact On Us!

Events don’t need to be big, overt or obvious to shift us internally.

They can be ever so subtle and more often that not, they are. That’s why we miss them and end up in the likes of depression.

Simply because, little by little, in ever so subtle ways, we’re spending more and more time ‘hanging out’ in our Survival System and depleting our system, of all those health-enhancing chemicals supplied by our Thriving System.

Then, one day we wake up and find ourselves stuck in darkness. A darkness we don’t understand because nothing ‘major’ may have happened prior to us experiencing this space known as ‘depression’.

However, when we realise depression is simply a symptom of an Overactive Survival System, we can finally see the light and the path up and out of it more clearly.

As a result, depression itself, becomes far less fearful and we can more rapidly elevate ourselves out of this dark space, we’ve found ourselves in. Simply, by shifting from one side of our nervous system to the other and living in alignment with the Ultimate Health-Enhancing Ratio of 20/80.

So, as you move through this process over the next 7 days, start becoming aware of any sensations you feel within your body. Where do you ‘experience’ the event in your body? And, which events triggers which sensations within you.

Start noticing the subtle, internal differences throughout your day.

We need to recognise that something, as nondescript as not being able to have a simple conversation with someone we love because they’re too busy scrolling on their mobile device, can instantly activate our Survival System (which can instantly lead us to feel a range of emotions. Remember, the Survival System heightens our emotional brain and switches off our rational, smart-thinking brain).

A quick example:

Let’s imagine we’re trying to converse or express ourselves to a ‘near and dear’ one. But, instead of investing their time listening intently to us, they’re busy, head stuck in their mobile device, scrolling their newsfeed.

How does this simple situation make you feel? Where do you feel it in your body?

Maybe, you instantly see red and your head heats up with anger, or you experience that horrible ‘knotted’ feeling in the pit of your stomach.

Whenever you experience these uncomfortable internal reactions, you can be sure, you’ve activated your Survival System and ‘set off’ a chemical disruption throughout your entire body-mind system.

You’ve unknowingly triggered your fight/flight response. Which ‘shuts down’ access to all your higher-level, neural pathways in our brain, leaving you mentally, emotionally and physically impaired.

In this space, the chances of us giving someone a ‘piece of our mind’, rather than keeping our own ‘peace of mind’ is highly likely. Simply because our system is priming us for a battle!

Can you see, this chaos (arguments, conflict, uncomfortable feelings, disrupted chemistry) all unfolded because of a mere moment of unsuccessful communication.

How Do I Calculate My Personal Surviving Vs Thriving Ratio?

So, after completing the entire 7 days you will have running totals for both your Survival System and Thriving System.

Refer to the image below.

To quickly calculate your Personal Surviving vs Thriving Ratio (using the figures above), follow these 5 simple steps:

STEP 1: Add Running Totals Of Both Systems

For example; 35 (Survival System Total) + 13 (Thriving System Total) = 48 (Grand total of triggers).

So, for the entire 7 days, we have a total of 48 triggers: 35 are activating our Survival System and just, 13 are activating our Thriving System.

This is the first step towards calculating your Personal Surviving vs Thriving Ratio complete.

STEP 2: Calculate Your Survival System Ratio

By using the following formula:

(Survival System Total / Grand Total) x 100 = Your Survival System Ratio.

Quick example;

35 / 48 = 0.729

0.729 x 100 = 73% (Your Survival System Ratio)

This means, around 73% of your time is spent operating from your Survival System (opposed to the recommended 20% of the Ultimate Health-Enhancing Ratio).

STEP 3: Calculate Your Thriving System Ratio

By using the following formula:

(Thriving System Total / Grand Total) x 100 = Your Thriving System Ratio.

Quick example;

13 / 48 = 0.27

0.27 x 100 = 27% (Your Thriving System Ratio)

This means, around 27% of your time is spent operating from your Survival System (opposed to the recommended 80% of the Ultimate Health-Enhancing Ratio).

STEP 4: Your Personal Surviving vs Thriving Ratio

Your Personal Survival vs Thriving Ratio is revealed by simply placing your Survival System Ratio over your Thriving System Ratio.

For example, using the figures above:

Our Personal Survival vs Thriving Ratio = 73 / 27

STEP 5: Ultimate Health-Enhancing Ratio Comparison

How does your Personal Survival vs Thriving Ratio compare to the Ultimate Health-Enhancing Ratio of 20/80 ?

For example: If our Personal Survival vs Thriving Ratio is 73/27, when we compare that to the recommended health-enhancing ratio of 20/80, we can clearly see we are activating our Survival System, too many times for it to be considered healthy.

We’re unknowingly disrupting our internal chemistry and leaving ourselves in a less-than optimal state; mentally, emotionally and physically.
