CCRESA and/or Region3 Superintendents:As CCRESA Board Members (Superintendents) should recall, we are making arrangements to offer professionaldevelopment through VitalSmarts to develop administrators' skills in becoming effective change agents.VitalSmarts programs are used extensively in many different sectors including major businesses, hospitals, anda variety of public agencies. When we think about the gap between "Knowing" and "Doing", the VitalSmartsprograms emphasize the "Doing" side of the equation. Inadequate and ineffective implementation is where manyleaders and organizations fail.

The VitalSmarts offerings are organized around their four best-selling books:

Crucial ConversationsCrucial Accountability (formerly Crucial Confrontations)Influencer (for organizational change)Change Anything (for personal change)

We are contracting with Lynn Williams, a recently retired Wake County principal and now a part-time facultymember at NCSU, to serve as the certified facilitator of our sessions and to provide coaching to participants. Thiswill provide our participants with a local, readily available resource and will significantly reduce our costs.

We will start with a principal cohort of approximately 24 participants who will enroll in Crucial Conversations andInfluencer. Each program is two days long and will be offered in the CCRESA's Assembly Room on the followingdates:

Crucial Conversations: February 3 and 12Influencer: March 5 and 19

Lynn and I reviewed this program and proposal with our Principals Council whose members were quiteenthusiastic and who made a number of suggestions that we have incorporated into our plans.

The success of this program is critically dependent upon identifying the participants who can get us off to a greatstart. The Council recommended that each superintendent nominate an elementary, middle, and high school

principal to participate in the first two cohorts (A second cohort will be started either over the summer or nextfall.). We would like for you to nominate three principals who have the respect of their peers and who could helpus to promote and expand the program if they have a successful experience themselves. We would likenomination to this program to be perceived as an honor and wonderful professional opportunity. Consequently, wewould like your nominees to be selected from among your "high flyers." We do suggest, however, that youconsider nominating your district's principal representative on the CCRESA Principal's Council if they areinterested in participating and you consider them to be among the "high flyers" who have influence with theirpeers. A list of Principal Council reps can be accessed at: http://www.ccresa.net/councils/principal-council/

When VitalSmarts offers these programs, the tuition is $1200 per participant per program. We are offering this toyou free of charge. I hope that each of you will take advantage of this opportunity.

Please nominate an elementary, middle, and high school principal who you believe is the type ofleader for whom we are looking and who is committed to participating on all four of the dates citedabove. We will select approximately 24 principals for this first cohort with the intention of including theremainder in the second cohort. Since the first meeting date is February 3rd, I would appreciate it ifyou could send me the names of your nominees by January 10th. We need a name, school (gradelevel), and email address.

Thanks for your assistance. I believe that this program has the potential to have a significant, positive impact onthese principals' schools and, ultimately, on the district. You or your principals can learn more about theVitalSmarts programs at http://www.vitalsmarts.com/ .
