NEWS 4 Sealing Technology July 2007 New inerting systems for gas seals A new line of custom-designed nitrogen cabinets from Parker Hannifin are designed to meet the stringent requirements for inerting non-contacting, dry running gas seals commonly found in critical service pumps and compressors. The cabinet systems are designed to run continuously and unattended, delivering a reliable, constant supply of inert gas to the dry gas seals. The units can be equipped with a dual filtration system to allow filter maintenance to be performed while the generator is still operational. The nitrogen mem- brane generators include proprietary high productivity HiFluxx hollow fibre membranes which provide a compact cabinet design. The system operates at low pressure, so the feed air supply can be plant or instrument air. Additionally, these systems can be equipped with local nitrogen boost- ers to charge high-pressure cylinders on the same cabinet skids, assuring a back-up supply of nitrogen. Satisfactory business trend reported Together with its Japanese business partner Eagle, Burgmann Industries registered sales increases again in 2006. The considerable degree of cost pressure in terms of raw material and energy was able to be cushioned by concluding global long-term purchasing contracts with key sup- pliers. The result was that, together with its Japanese partner Eagle, seal manufacturer Burgmann Industries GmbH of Wolfratshausen, Germany increased its sales in the worldwide EagleBurgmann Alliance by 9.2% to 500.3 million. The proportion of sales accounted for internationally by EagleBurgmann was 75.8%, with the remainder generated in Germany. The Business Development divi- sion registered some important suc- cesses in terms of business with inter- national operators and key accounts. These included a contract with Sulzer Pumps worth a total 2.9 million, for the supply of mechanical seals and supply systems for what is currently the biggest Siberian pipeline project, namely ESPO (East Siberia to Pacific Ocean). This is the biggest individual order to be landed by the company since its founding 17 years ago. July will see the launch of a specially developed crystalline diamond coat- ing for application to the sliding faces of mechanical seals. With a thick- ness of up to 10 µm, this diamond coating is suited for use on gas and fluid-lubricated mechanical seals, for example in the oil, gas pharmaceuti- cal and chemical industries. It offers outstanding protection against wear in dry-running operation, mixed friction and abrasive media. For the future the alliance is pursuing a consis- tent and targeted policy of growth and consolidation of its positioning. The high levels of energy demand above all in China and India in the flourishing oil and gas industries there will be hav- ing a positive impact on the business trend.
