Harvest ofgratitude

When people teach us about gratitude, they usually tell us to be thankful for everything and everyone in our lives. After awhile it starts being second nature to say “Thank you!” and it feels great to acknowledge the good that comes into our lives. Page 2

When people teach us about gratitude, they usually tell us to be thankful for everything and everyone in our lives. I agree with this and I believe we must be thankful. After awhile it starts being second nature to say “Thank you!” and it feels great to acknowledge the good that comes into our lives. Last month something happened and it’s perfect for me to share it with you during the month of Thanksgiving. Something that I wanted to have happen didn’t. But I found myself saying, “Thank you,” because I realized that if this had been for my highest good, it would have happened. It not happening was the best thing that could have happened for me. When I realized what I was doing, I wanted to share it with you because it’s very powerful. The way it usually goes is we ask for something, pray for it, “treat” for it, affirm and visualize, etc. If it happens, we say thank you. If it doesn’t happen, we start analyzing what went wrong. Didn’t we visualize long enough? Didn’t we say the affirmations right? What did we do wrong? What if getting whatever it is isn’t in our best interests right now? This is why we add, “This or something better now happens

The leaves of spring and summer are green. When the fall weather shows up, they turn colors; but although it seems to happen all at once, it doesn’t! It seems that one day the leaves are green and the next they are brown or gold. But it actually takes time for them to change and it is so slow it is almost imperceptible. I can’t stand in my yard and watch them make these changes all at once. When I make changes in my life or try to grow something like my business, it seems to happen slowly, bit-by-bit. Then one day – or so it appears – what I was working towards manifests. When I can remember this in the midst of the slow day-to-day growth, I can be patient because I know everything is happening in perfect order for the highest good of all concerned. I can relax. I can breathe. I can focus on what needs to happen today

for the highest good of all concerned.” What if it takes some time for our manifestation to show up? What if we need to learn to be patient? Nature has some advice for us. Now is the time of year when most of us see the leaves on trees change from green to various shades of yellow, orange, brown, gold, and red. It’s as if Mother Nature wants to give us a show before she shuts down for the winter. As I watch these changing colors, I am reminded of a valuable teaching. I share with you the desire to manifest quickly. Whether it’s my business or a meditation practice, I want it to grow or develop quickly. Now would be good. It has taken me years to learn patience and the leaves have helped me do this. Here’s what I see.

consciousness that he embodied. In times of polarizing divisions among peoples and major religions, the profound life and miracle energy of this humble saint, in bringing together people of many different faiths, will serve as light and truth upon seemingly intractable ignorance, divisions, and fears. The story of his life, the Sri Sai Satcharitra, introduces Shirdi Baba to many in America who know little or nothing about him, and a modern English translation of it is now widely available for the first time. The promise that Baba made before passing from his body in 1918 is that he would be forever present to those calling him for peace from pain and suffering. He was so fully realized in his being that there is high shakti (sacred energy) in his photograph and words, or in invoking his name by even simply calling, “Sai, Sai.” His eternal consciousness cradles us in a love and tenderness that is so real that his grace is here even in the context of the complexity, noise and chaos of life in contemporary America. Baba lived most of his life in a tiny rural village in India. Today his burial site is one of the most visited holy sites in that entire country, drawing people of many faiths and nationalities who witness his continuing living presence. His relevance to us in 2014

in the West is beyond imagining. Living for decades in an abandoned temple, begging daily for his food, orphaned at birth, with no relatives or family name, he epitomized a being unattached to identity and embodying ultimate spiritual truth. No one knew his specific religion, yet every encounter he had with persons or animals is an expression of the miracle energy of divine consciousness. He was omniscient as to minute details of the lives of all who come before him, he healed incurable diseases, blessed barren couples with children, brought peace of mind and heart to countless people. Those who came to reveal him as a fraud, came away humbled and awed. And so very important to our times of fear and suspicion, he brought harmony and trust among Hindus, Muslims, and those of other religious faiths throughout his life, stating that all religions are one in attempting to express God. He made no distinctions regarding religion, caste. or gender. One of his closest attendants was a leper. When coming into Baba’s presence, many who worshipped different gurus or gods saw their sacred being rather than the physical form of Sai Baba, revealing his truth that all saints are one. Whoever came to him with devotion and a pure heart he accepted with joy, whatever their faith. The caring, love, and sweetness he emanated was so profound that those before him called him Mother, Father.

Cradled in Love and Tenderness by

Shirdi Sai BabaContinued from Back

His life is a testament to how one’s very being is the most effective way to share with others the indescribable bliss of spiritual union. In the West, our hyper-active minds and enhanced egos are formidable hurdles, given cultures that promote both as virtues. We may have much in our lives, but lack peace of mind and peace of heart. It is to such symptoms of disorientation that Baba brings a special grace. The simple act of looking deeply into the eyes of Baba in a photograph, or being quietly with his words in the Sri Sai Satcharitra, is to feel a consciousness that holds you in love and tenderness. The anxiety of being the doer starts to ease. He taught the importance of releasing our sense of “doership” with regard to both good and bad deeds, to be without pride and egoism in all things. The sacred has placed you in the situation you are in, and sacred energy in the form of Baba’s consciousness is the simple and direct solution. We need only to turn our attention there with faith and patience. Baba himself promised that his special character is to address the constant wandering of the mind, attachment to the physical senses and an inability to turn our sight inward, and free any person who remembers and meditates on him. He also promised that the miracles experienced by those who call for him would continue after his physical passing, and my own experiences have confirmed the power of his continuing commitment to our welfare. The Satcharitra was originally proposed to be written by Hemadpant, a devotee of Baba. In giving his permission, Baba said he would use the opportunity to write about his life himself, that Hemadpant would just be the

outward instrument and Baba would write the autobiography so his life stories and teachings would continue to be of service. The resulting book is a direct expression of Baba’s soul consciousness. The Sri Sai Satcharitra is not a normal book understood through the mind, but approached as an act of meditation or devotion with an open heart, one is immersed in pure sacred energy, unconditional love. It has the power to transform our disorientation into self-realization.

The new English edition of the Satcharitra is the inspiration and initial work of Monika Taylor, a senior student of Sri Kaleshwar. Sri Kaleshwar, whose teacher was Baba, was instrumental in introducing Baba’s avadhut mastery over time, space and the elements to Western students. The prior English translation of the book, done in the 1940s in India, presented reading difficulties for contemporary readers. The new edition, which was co-edited by William Song for printing and publication, is now available in hard copy from Amazon An electronic version of the book is also available for free download at the website: www.divinelineage.org. William Song, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, studied with Sri Kaleshwar and teaches sacred meditation channels. Visiting the Samadhi site of Shirdi Sai Baba in India altered his life profoundly. He is a painter whose work explores tonal light frequencies. Contact him at www.william-song.com.

My grandmother could tell a story that could make a sick dog laugh. Being a southerner of origin, that was actually a high compliment. And boy, did I love my grandmother’s stories. She enjoyed them, too, as evidenced by how much she herself would laugh while telling us one. At her funeral – and she lived to be just a few months shy of 100 – several speakers got up and shared some of grandma’s best stories. And I laughed so hard I cried. Trouble was, you didn’t laugh at a funeral where I’m from, and I got lots of dirty looks until my sister pulled my head down and wrapped her arms around me so as I heaved up and down it just looked like I was appropriately crying. Afterwards, people clucked sympathy to me for being so emotionally overcome. I was, indeed, emotionally overcome, but not just because of the loss of my grandmother, but because of the wonderful memories that came flooding back to me while I was re-hearing those stories of hers. It is her stories that live on within me. And what I remember the most.

We all love a good story, whether it makes us laugh or not. Stories have the power to move us in unexpected ways. And it is the same way with your marketing. The best marketing tells a story. Whether it’s a written story, relayed in a video, or told from a stage, people do love stories because they can relate to them so well. Just like a movie or novel, a good marketing story has a plot, characters, and movement toward a climax. It keeps people reading to see what’s going to happen next.

the SSS Story Structure

If you look at almost any story, you’ll see a common structure. This structure consists of three Ss: setting, situation, and solution. The setting gives a background for the story. The situation is the challenge that the characters must overcome. In marketing, it’s usually some kind of pain or frustration that your product or service solves for them. Then, the solution is the happy ending where that problem is solved.

personal Stories Personal stories always work well to sell both products and services. A personal story relates how you struggled with

the same problem your reader has, and that you figured out a solution, which is the product or service you’re offering. The great thing about personal stories is that they can be completely true. No embellishment is necessary. Products and service offerings that were made to solve a problem always have personal stories behind them.

Expert Stories A variation on the personal story is one in which you didn’t solve the problem yourself, but met an expert who helped you solve the problem. The story is the same, but in this case you’re passing on the expert’s own story and their knowledge rather than your own. This type of story is particularly effective because of the air of mystery surrounding the expert. That expert may be inaccessible to your audience for a variety of reasons, but you, of course, are not. You are available to share the knowledge and expertise that you’ve

developed because of that expert and you are ready and willing to share it. Alternatively, you can actually introduce your prospects to the expert and let them tell their story themselves. This approach is particularly effective via webinars or teleseminars.

historical and Cultural Stories

You can also add a bit of history or culture to your product or service in order to reframe it. This is very common with natural health products that are based on indigenous traditional medicine. The setting of an

herb’s use for thousands of years among the people of the Amazon Basin helps to explain to the customer where it’s coming from and why they should try it. The product doesn’t just appear out of the blue.

Your Story as a Marketer

In addition to the story of your products and services, it also helps if you have a story about yourself and what you do (and how you came to do it). Celebrity-like marketers with strong followings always have a good backstory. A few common marketing stories include the single mother who built an online business while raising her kids; the slacker or surfer who never

Digestive system health is a cornerstone of naturopathic medicine and Ayurveda. Like the health of our immune system (as discussed last month), natural health practitioners recognize that the digestive system health can be challenged during the fall season. What causes this phenomenon? Is it the cooler temperatures? Perhaps the onslaught of holiday foods, from Halloween into the New Year?

As with many health issues, there are many factors that can contribute to digestive system disturbances. I would like to share my experiences in promoting and preventing digestive problems in the upcoming months. I remember the analogy one of my favorite Ayurvedic teachers shared about digestion. The concept of digestion is like an oven. The oven cooks the food and changes it from one form to another. So our stomach acid and digestive tract act on food we consume to turn it in to utilizable nutrients. This oven concept resonated with me, as I imagined a perfectly cooked recipe compared to a burnt or undercooked one. Optimal digestion, or cooking of our food, is challenged this time of year due to the cooler temperatures. The digestive fire, Agni, as it is known in Ayurveda, must be balanced in each season like the porridge in Goldilocks and the Three Bears, so that it burns not too hot, and not too cold but just right. Typically, the cooler temperatures and propensity to indulge in rich foods during the fall and upcoming winter seasons hampers our digestive fire. I recommend paying close attention to your digestion on a daily basis. Some of the symptoms you could experience include: •Heartburnoracidreflux. •Gasand/orbloating. •Excessiveorloud“stomachrumblings.” •Changesinbowelmovements(constipation or loose stools).

And because the digestive system is a key player in providing health to the whole body, other symptoms may show up including fatigue, skin complaints, and mood changes like increased irritability or depression. It is really common to experience some temporary symptoms after an unusually large holiday meal for example. There are many ways to naturally support the body in recovering from these indulgences and supporting digestion during the colder months of the year. Ginger: The ginger plant (Zingiber officinalis) has a hearty root that is used to promote digestion year round. It is especially supportive in the cooler months as it is warming in nature. Ginger helps promote circulation and warmth in the body. It is also useful for improving metabolism and the breakdown of food. There are many ways to incorporate ginger into your daily food routine; why take another capsule? I will share a quick and easy ginger recipe at the end of this article. triphala: Triphala is a renowned Ayurvedic herbal formulation used to support optimal digestion. This ancient formula consists of three fruits: Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki. This combination is anti-oxidant rich, boosts metabolism, and promotes healthy bowel movements. pippali: Pippali (Piper longum) is another key Ayurvedic digestive remedy. Also known as long pepper, Pippali is similar to black pepper in that it is a warming and digestive herb. When Pippali, ginger and black pepper are combined in equal parts it is known as “Trikatu” (three pungents). This formula is excellent for relieving sluggishness and cold conditions. Licorice: (Glycyrrhiza glabra) One of my favorite remedies for occasional symptoms of reflux or acid indigestion is known as “DGL,” a specially-prepared form of licorice. When taken as a chewable or powder form, licorice soothes and coats the lining of the digestive tract. As some forms of licorice have been implicated in increasing blood pressure, it is very important to check in with your healthcare practitioner to make sure it is safe for you and in the right form. probiotics: Bacteria in our intestines are needed for optimal digestions and help with the processing of food. Modern research indicates that the numbers and kinds of bacteria present can influence not just our digestive health, but also the immune system and metabolic conditions like diabetes and obesity. Foods like yogurt, Kimchi, sauerkraut and other fermented foods can help support maintaining healthy “gut flora.” Digestive enzymes: Special proteins in the digestive tract, known as enzymes, help break down large food particles into smaller nutrients. Enzymes help break

A Course of Love is a course for the heart. Remarkably, it bypasses the mind. It uses thought to go beyond thought.

It may be astonishing to hear that there is now a “continuation” of A Course in Miracles, but it is true. Forty years ago Jesus dictated his Course to the scribe Helen Schucman. More recently, over three years, he similarly dictated to Mari Perron. He named it A Course of Love.

What’s a teacarina? It’s a way to bring music to your table. A Teacarina is an ocarina – a 12,000-year old type of vessel flute - that’s also a tea cup! They come four to a box so the whole family can join in, and there is a little booklet that explains how to make music and the notes to fun songs like Mary Had a Little Lamb. Enjoy a cup of tea together while making music. This is a fun and very unique gift that will have people laughing and joining in the musical fellowship. Now is the time of year most people start thinking about what sort of track their life is on. My Life Contract by Joel Fotinos (Hampton Roads) gives a 90-day program for discovering your purpose, understanding and making goals, moving forward and

staying accountable. This is an actual workbook that takes you through the process and then gives you space to write every day, recording what you plan to do and then write down what you actually did. There are tons of great ideas here as well as lots of support for following up. Fans of Rumi will love Rumi Day by Day, by Maryam Mafi (Hampton Roads) where a different quote is offered for meditation every day of the year. Here’s one: Have you ever seen a person/writingonapage already filled with words/orplantingsaplingswheretreesalreadygrow?/Bettertobeablanksheet,betterthevirginsoil,/sothehandofSpiritmay leave fresh traces. the only Little prayer You Need by Debra Landwehr Engle (Hampton Roads) is a small book that offers a punch. Inspired by the Course in Miracles, the only prayer you need is six words: Please heal my fear-based thoughts! This book is not only inspirational and supportive; it offers practical ways to apply the principles to all areas of life. If you’re ready to move into an easier, more centered way of living, read this book and then say the six-word prayer. I had fun coloring two of the pages in Coloring Animal Mandalas by Wendy

Piersall (Ulysses Press). The book gives 30 black-and-white animal-based mandalas that are fairly intricate and very beautiful. There’s a turtle and some bees, a lion, a parrot, fish, and even snakes. Coloring mandalas is a relaxing way to focus your attention and energies and can be very meditative. It’s also very satisfying for those of us who don’t draw. This would be a great gift for older children and adults. Gather friends and family and play the Five Agreements Game by Olivier Clerc (Findhorn Press). Don Miguel Ruiz says, “You cannot play this game without feeling joyful and free.” During the game, you identify the relationships that make your life more difficult and then transform them by “slaying the dragon,” your own shadow. There’s an 80-page book, notepad for each player, agreement cards, relationships cards, prize cards, and bonus gift agreement cards. This is a great way to practice higher principles and have fun at the same time. Shakti Gawain and her co-teacher Gina Vucci have written a book based on the workshops they have given together for years. the Relationship handbook, a path of Consciousness, healing, and Growth (New World Library) shows how all the relationships in our lives are mirrors that reflect back to us what we may or may not know about ourselves. The book can help the reader become aware of and heal unconscious patterns, communicate more successfully, and use the trouble spots in our relationships as a way to heal. There are sharings of stories – even some of domestic abuse – and the understanding that some relationships will be terminated. This is a great book with practical insights that will give you an expansive depth of understanding about yourself and the people in your life. harness Astrology’s Bad Boy, A handbook for Conquering pluto’s tumultuous transit by Hazel Dixon-Cooper & Bridgett Walther (Beyond Words), explains how Pluto, the planet of transformation, affects us and how we can work with rather than against this energy. Their writing is fun with a hefty dose of humor. Although they do explain some

common astrological ideas and terms, the more one knows about astrology the more one could benefit from the information. You’ve probably heard about the Lenormand Oracle by now. It’s a set of 36 small cards with pictures and playing cards on them. The cards are used to tell a story and they have been around since the early 1800s. Very different from the tarot or other cards, this book is bound to be welcomed by those attempting to learn how to read the cards. the Complete Lenormand oracle handbook by Caitlin Matthews not only gives a great history of the deck, it also offers many different ways to read and use the cards. If you want to read the Lenormand cards, you need this book. Walking the Camino, Six Ways to Santiago, produced and directed by Lydia Smith, (Beyond Words) is fabulous. Whether you’ve walked the Camino in Spain, thought about doing it, read about it, or know you probably won’t ever do it yourself, you will love this movie. I know I will watch it multiple times. I’ve reviewed several books about the Camino here, but this is the first movie I’ve seen of the journey. We meet various pilgrims from ages three to 73, as they walk across an entire country. We hear their stories, feel their pain and triumphs, and celebrate their success as they come to the end of the journey. This is a visceral movie. I couldn’t help but be moved by the pilgrims and their emotions. A few quotes: “I feel like I am walking in a post card.” “There is freedom here, nothing is set, change is the only constant.” “The road itself is home.” Get the movie, watch it, and learn how the Camino can touch your life without leaving home. If you’re not clear on your life purpose, this is your book; if you’re willing to do the work. Life purpose Boot Camp, the 8-Week Breakthrough plan for Creating a Meaningful Life, by Eric Maisel (New World

step guide based on a new psychological approach to improving emotional well-being called Future Directed Therapy. The practical assignments, tips, and exercises are intriguing and create a sense of upliftment and hope. I’m sure that using the entire program would result in greater happiness, balance, and success and I look forward to giving some of them a whirl. As the name implies, this is a high energy book: hop, Skip, Jump - 75 Ways to playfully Manifest a Meaningful Life by Marney K. Makridakis (New World Library) begs you to loosen up and have some fun with your work and manifestations. The book is bursting with ideas, exercises, concepts, and tools that are designed to help you navigate through the three stages of hop, skip, and jump. Hop is focusing on exploring new beliefs. Skip helps harness spontaneity, wonder and love. Jump spurs us into inspired action. Our community tends to be rather serious about our lives. This book will help us lighten up and remember life is meant to be lived and enjoyed, not endured.

Just remember, your story needs to be real in order to be effective. Don’t make up a common sob story just to appeal to your prospects’ feelings.

Writing Your Story There never really is any need to fabricate your story. Every person and every product or service has a story behind it, whether you

realize it or not. Instead of creating a history out of thin air, look for the one that’s already there, just waiting to be discovered. Start by looking at the obstacles or problems you sought to overcome. Relate these to yourself or to others you know. You want the reader, your prospect, to clearly see themselves in the same or a similar situation. How did you solve those problems or obstacles for yourself or others?Let the reader know that you are available to help them solve the same problems and that they are experiencing themselves. Keep it personal. People love knowing the “inside” story.

And if you can make ’em laugh in the process, they’ll likely never forget you.

If you are a cat lover and/or owner, you may already be familiar with the word. The word is catification. When I typed it just now, my spelling and grammar program underlined it in red saying it is not in the dictionary. I have no doubt it will be added soon. I first heard the word on one of my favorite animal TV shows, My Cat From Hell, with feline behaviorist, Jackson Galaxy. It is the word he used to describe environmental enrichment to owners of cats with behavior problems. I have been doing the same thing with my clients for many years. I just didn’t call it that. There are many reasons why cats have behavior issues that require professional intervention and coaching to resolve. The most common problems are inappropriate urination, defecation, aggression toward

humans or other animals, and fighting. Most of the time when these problems occur, the environment the cat lives in is involved in some way. By creating a better environment, the behavior issues often just stop or at least, greatly improve. That is where catification comes in. Catification is important both inside and outside of the home. Usually this term is used when describing structural changes or additions to the home inside or out. Here, I will also include some other things as well. For example when bathroom issues are present the most common reasons for that are that the cat box is not large enough, clean enough, or not convenient or safe. My recommendations are: one box per-cat plus one, at least one box on each floor

of the house, scoop and stir at least once a day (and twice for fastidious cats). The larger the box the better and something about 28 inches by 32 inches, with three to four inches of litter is ideal. For problem cats, no lids and no liners are usually best. Then there is the safety issue. If the cat may feel potentially trapped or vulnerable to other household cats or dogs while using the box, then multiple boxes and positioning

The New Buzz Word for Cat Fancierscan be critical. When it comes to eliminating safety issues, aggression, and fighting problems, the structural type of catification can be very important. Cats like to climb and go upforsafety.Especiallyinmultiplecatand/or other animal households the ability to do this can be really helpful. Cat climbing and scratching posts and condo type structures have been around for a very long time. They are a great addition to any cat environment. The latest in interior catification now are wall shelves and many

creative variations on that theme. Jackson calls it “building a cat super-highway.” This involves using shelves or boards on the wall in between furniture to create a path for the cat to traverse a room and in some cases an entire house without ever touching the floor. Doing something like this can make a frightened cat feel a lot more confident and willing to explore and less likely to feel the

need to attack humans or other animals. When I was growing up, our family cats were allowed to go outside whenever they wanted to. Unfortunately, over the years I learned that as life got busier, that practice was not a safe one. After losing some beloved cat friends to known or unknown causes outside, I stopped letting my cats go outside. It was a frustrating life for all concerned until I built my first cat run. where the stones of Stonehenge originate, to the center of Lundy Island, with the third tip of the triangle formed by Stonehenge itself. This may not seem important except for the fact that we were dealing with a very ancient civilization without modern mapping equipment or drones. On the same page of the same book these same triangles are repeated when drawing lines from the station stones in Stonehenge. These intersections and some lesser sites along the line appear on the lines themselves. But, for my purposes, do pick up some pens and, if you will, draw the Flower of Life. There is something captivating and magical in just tracing the lines and following the intricate pattern. When you

do, you will be following in the big footsteps of our ancestors, and possibly extra-terrestrials, who knows? What could be more exciting than that?

fan ever since. I built my third and largest cat run four years ago when I moved to my current location. I call it the “Paws Majal” because it is so magnificent (well, at least in my and my cat’s opinion it is!). It is 20 x 22 feet and about that height in the center. It was built around a large tree stump, has rim lofts around it with a ladder, and carpeted climbing posts so the cats can get up to them

to play, run, or lounge in the sun. There are carpeted shelves, cat condos, and climbing posts around the sides and three cat boxes. The ground is natural with grass. The sides are 1-inch by 2-inch wire, and the roof is fiberglass. There is a cat door in the wall of the house opening to a wired-in catwalk for access to the run. I can close off either entrance to keep the cats inside or out. I keep a clean bowl of water out there, as well as some self-entertainment cat toys spread around. Needless to say it is the cat’s meow and they use it year-round! Whether or not you have behavior problems with your cats, I think it is safe to assume that we all want our cat friends to be as happy as possible. Aside from providing great food, care, play, and loving them, creating a fabulous environment is key to that happiness. So the more you learn about interior and exterior catification, the better. You can create and do it yourself or there are companies now making cat wall shelves, companies available to custom-build cat runs, and portable outdoor enclosures in amazingly different sizes and shapes, too. You can go online and search the word, catification. Lots of good stuff comes up. In fact, I just discovered that Jackson’s latest book is now available and guess what it is called? Yep, no need to say it again. I obviously have not read it yet but I bet it has lots of great ideas in it.

I was probably 10 or 11 when our local Northridge movie theatre, The Peppertree, dug up the then 10-year old cult flick, Harold and Maude and began to show it for a limited time. My brother Jack, a decade older than me, really wanted see Pink Floyd’s The Wall, also playing at The Peppertree, so off we went to the movies. I thought the plan was that we’d watch a double feature together. Jack and I often did things together when I was a kid. Even with the age difference, I always felt like I was one of his favorite people. But as soon as the movie started, he whispered, “I’m going to sneak in to another movie. I’ll meet you back here.” And off he went. My other brother Haim, was “the responsible one” but Jack was the fun one. So, off he went to leave me alone in the theatre. Now I had seen movies before. Mom, Dad, and both brothers were all movie fans, but this was the first time I was left to experience a film, at a theatre, on my own. But I didn’t have time to ponder this “on my own” concept for too long because soon I was lost in the vision on the screen. A man’s shiny brown shoes, slowly walking down a staircase as he puts on a record, Cat Steven’s Don’t be Shy. It felt like a nursery rhyme with depth: Don’t be shy. Just let your feelings roll on by. Don’t wear fear or nobody will know you’re there. The man on the screen lights a candle and we see his face for the first time. He looks like he’s the same age as my brother. That must be Harold. But why is he so sad? Just lift your head, and let your feelings out instead… Harold gets up on a chair. He ties a rope around his neck and then he…. jumps. The music stops. His legs dangle. He hung himself! Why would he do such a thing? The music was so happy, I don’t understand… then a woman walks in. She doesn’t scream or anything. She calmly goes to her phone and dials it. And it’s the kind of phone we had back then, the kind that takes forever to dial. The kind you actually have to dial. The dialing sound is the only music now. Finally she speaks. “I suppose you think that’s very funny, Harold.” Harold coughs or laughs or something. He’s alive! Which is a good thing, because he’s about to meet the hilarious, strange, wise, 79-year-old woman played by Ruth Gordon, my first spiritual teacher… Maude. I spend the next 91 minutes in a Cat Stevens, Maude enlightenment-induced classroom better than any classroom I had ever been in before. I remember later telling my dad, “And then Maude picks one of the daisies and tells Harold, ‘Much of the world’s sorrow comes from people who are this, (and she points to the daisy,) but allow themselves to be treated as that.’ Then she points to them all. Get it? Get it?” Then later telling my mom, “So Maude asks Harold if he sings and dances. And

he said No. And she said, “I thought so.”

Because Maude, Maude sings and

dances even when she’s not singing and dancing, you

know?” I loved Maude with all of my little

being. She represented everything I felt to be

true. At a young age I had a clear idea, or rather feeling,

about my own uniqueness and my desire to always be myself. Maude was one big affirmation of these beliefs. I liked that. I was raised without a bedtime, chores, or a bevy of rules. Maybe because my

parents were in their 40s when they had me so they were just more relaxed. As a consequence, I had nothing to rebel against and always felt like I could be who I was, as I was it. And that was Maude through and through.

“L.I.V.E. LIVE! or else you got nothing to talk about in the locker room.” She knew stuff. Plus, she was fun.

It wasn’t until years later, upon my eighth or so viewing that I noticed the tattoo on Maude’s arm. It happens so quickly, for an instant the camera pauses on her concentration camp number. It’s never mentioned in the

film by Maude or anyone else. So here’s a character who went

through unknown sufferings and she can still tell Harold that she loves people because “they’re her species.” Now, I know that Maude is a figment of the screenwriter, Colin Higgins’, mind but I also have come to learn that many people have gone through countless, unimaginable pains, and yet, they continue on, some of them not only happily, but happy in that contagious sort of way. The sort of way that would make a 10-year old kid believe that life, in all it’s wierdness and sadness, is still worth singing and dancing about. My brother Jack died at 42 after years of drug abuse. What would Maude have said about that? She probably wouldn’t have judged it but she would have acknowledged its sadness. After all, one of her greatest lessons was about letting go. As she lie dying in the ambulance, Harold holds her hands and cries, “But you can’t go, Maude. I love you!” Maude smiles lovingly. “That’s wonderful! Now go out there and love some more.”

other sciences? It’s found inscribed on tombs, found on tile floors, and scribbled on columns. This same pattern has been repeated

as crop circles. If these crop

circles belong to beings superior

to us they are communica-ting to us in a language we have yet to understand. How-ever, it is a roadmap of our creation. It

is the key to how the Big

light and how our mathematics,

chemistry, and even the arrangement of cells within

us as embryos began. The Flower of Life is our history as a species. It is our human family album in pictorial form, yet it does not belong to any one religion or country, as mentioned before. Stare at it for a while. Better yet, as suggested in Spirit Science, draw it yourself and see what happens. It is more

complicated than it looks and by its very repetition it appears to be delightfully simple, but deceptively so. Da Vinci took this a step farther in Metatron’s Cube. One could speculate, “Who was Da Vinci and where did he come from?” Where did he get the keys to such special knowledge? The Tree of Life of the Jewish religion resides within the Flower of Life. It is as if an intelligence far beyond the common person living in ancient times wanted to give us road maps of our existence. Examples in the Periodic Table show up in the Flower and the answers to the pi of 3 and 5 appear in the Flower. Nearly everything we humans need to live is found in that one drawing. What we are made of and what we can make, all found in that sacred flower. For a deeper dive into the world of Sacred Geometry pick up John Mitchell’s book..4 It is no accident that the most sacred sights known to humankind are found on a grid of the planet. Sacred geometry is our legacy as a species. It is what makes musical tones pleasing, mathematical formulas like pi work, and is the blueprint of our world. In this discussion I don’t want to get so deeply into the mathematics that this article serves as a sleeping aid. Also, my personal grasp of mathematics is limited to recognizing an equilateral triangle. The year my mother died, I failed high school geometry simply by never appearing in class. So, this article will probably appear far below your head in math rather than above it. In fact, we will skirt the subject of mathematics as much as possible and concentrate on beauty, history, and mystery.

After watching a video provided by Spirit Science 1 I found myself becoming aware that everything fell in the lines of geometry and my lifelong fear of the subject subsided. I started seeing geometry in everything I looked at. The squares and rectangles of picture frames, the shape of an egg that seemed to be never-changing, the scales on a fish that formed a beautiful overlapping pattern more intricate than a human mind could ever conceive, a chambered nautilus with its gentle curves, all hypnotized me. However, a specific shape fascinated me the most: “The Flower of Life.” Spirit Science suggested that we draw it ourselves to get the full spiritual impact of the flower. So, I purchased a 29¢ child’s compass and a few art pens and started drawing away. It was much more complicated to draw than what I originally assumed, but, I learned a lot. Evidently I am not the only one. It is part of our legacy as human beings as is the Egg of Life, as is the Tree

of Life. Depictions of the Flower of Life appear on columns and floor tiles and tombs and rafters to prevent lightning strikes. The Flower of Life is found nearly everywhere in the world. Iraq, Eqypt, and Lapland have the flower, among the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci (though he doesn’t make any particular mention of them as being anything special,3 the fact that he took the time to draw them is significant on its own. The flower was found in the remains of an ancient Roman temple in Cordoba, Spain. Nearly everywhere man has tread, the Flower of Life has come with him. This is our heritage. This is what we are made of. The Egg of Life, a simplified form of the Flower of Life, replicates the cells that make us human beings. This geometric pattern of the Flower of Life is found

worldwide. It crosses lines of countries and has no particular religion. How this particular form was brought to nearly every country in the world countless years ago is unknown. Was it spread worldwide by extraterrestrials attempting to make us understand mathematics, music, and

Cradled in love and tenderness by

Shirdi Sai Baba

Continued on Page 3

By William Song What would it mean for humanity if we now had photographs of Jesus or Buddha taken when they were alive so that we could see their faces, or had words that they had written about their own lives? These photographs and words would be charged with transformative sacred energy, the love and consciousness of a divine being. Time and space would pose no barrier to the priceless immanent grace such objects would hold. As an act of love in extreme times, divine presence manifests into human form to guide humanity toward love, compassion and inner peace, their spirit too large to be contained within the strictures of any given existing belief system. Mother Mary, Jesus, and Buddha are examples of the highest calling of lives lived for the welfare of others, lives that expanded what was known to be possible for other human beings. In coming years, Shirdi Sai Baba will become known as such a being, recognized globally for the inclusive
