After recently becoming the darlings of the US music scene, Ohio’s Twenty One Pilots are set to wow Aussie audiences with their genre-defying blend of piano-driven “schizoid” pop rock.
Earlier this year, the band floored audiences and critics alike when they supported pop-punk trio Paramore during their Australian arena tour, and the band’s buzzworthy performance at the 2014 American MTV Movie Awards had the audience of masked fans jumping in unison to their hit, Car Radio.
With their high-energy live performances, the duo initially developed a rabid fanbase across the US Midwest, soon growing beyond the US coasts into a global following after constant tour-ing and their deep connection with fans over social media.
WHAT'S ON With the mysoginist train wreck that
was Blurred Lines leaving this reviewer scratching his head at its seemingly endless popularity, there was a sense of vindication upon learning that this ap-palling album sold a meagre 530 copies in it’s first week. Essentially, this is an album with one purpose - to win back Thicke’s estranged wife Paula Patton, and is literally full of whiny ,two-dimensional nonsense and arguably some of the worst lines ever delivered in the history of the English language. Try this one on for size - “Oh baby I’ve got a feeling we were lovers in a previous life”.
Yuck.By the end of this album, there is an
overarching sense that, if this record does win Thicke back his wife, it will probably be because she isn’t a fan of music. Did someone say overshare?
If ever there was a film to dissuade would-be international drug traffickers, then this Alan Parker-helmed thriller would be just the trick. This harrow-ing true story tells the tale of American citizen Billy Hayes who, in the early 1970s was caught trying to smuggle two-kilos of hashish out of Turkey. He is initially sentenced to four years for possession. The prison environment is inhospitable with a sadistic prison guard named Hamidou ruling the prison.
While it comes with a fair amount of “hoo-ra” US patriotism, this Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights)-directed war flick is a gripping experience from go to woah.
Based on the New York Times bestselling true story, Lone Survivor tells the incredible tale of four Navy SEALs on a covert mission to neutralize a high-level al-Qaeda operative.
The four men must make an impossible moral decision in the mountains of Afghanistan that leads them into an enemy ambush.
As they confront unthinkable odds, the SEALs must find reserves of strength and resilience to fight to the finish. Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch and Eric Bana star.

f you know anything about seminal Washington-via-San Francisco sludge-grunge-metallers The Melvins, you’d know that frontman and driving force behind the band Buzz Osborne isn’t
one to be predictable.
“What I do has always kind of existed a little bit outside of the norm - I guess you could say that I’ve never really been much of a joiner,” he told TE.
To that end, Osborne, under the moniker of King Buzzo, has released his debut solo long player, This Machine Kills Artists, and the distortion is dialled way down in favour of a stark acoustic-only sound. But, if you think that Osborne is getting all folky, well you’d better think again.
“I have no interest in sounding like a bad version of James Taylor which is what happens when almost every rock and roller straps on an acoustic guitar. No thanks - This Machine Kills Artists is a different kind of animal,” he said.
A different kind of animal is an under-statement. This Machine Kills Artists - a cheeky play on the message folk icon Woody Gutherie had stamped on his guitar, “this machine kills fascists” - sees Osborne striking down on that acoustic with as much menace as ever and, while the sound may be quieter, the riffs are as sludgy as anything he’s recorded with the Melvins. Lyrically, too, don’t go thinking that Osborne is writing peans to summer

or the fragility of the human experience - with titles like The Spoiled Brat and How I Became Offensive it’s pretty obvious that this is Osborne as snarky as he ever was. Folk rock has rarely sounded as off-kilter.
While this has been cause of much surprise among global music wags, Osborne said that he couldn’t really see what all the fuss was about.
“It’s funny because people have told me how much the record sounds like a Melvins record and I’m like ‘well, I’m in the Melvins so what the hell do you expect,” he laughed.
“With the Melvins, a lot of those songs were written on an acoustic guitar anyway so it wasn’t like it was much different - although I guess I did have to think about how I was going to make it work with only a guitar. I think I’ve done a pretty good job.”
For the uninitiated, Osborne has, for the past 30 years, constantly been redefining what we think of as heavy with the Melvins whose albums such as Ozma, Bullhead, The Bootlicker and Houdini have influenced countless grunge rockers, punks and metalheads in equal measure. Everyone from contemporaries Nirvana (Osborne even had a fair hand in their formation, introducing Kurt Cobain to Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl) and Soundgarden to more sonically visceral acts like Mastodon and Neurosis. Aside from the Melvins, Osborne laid much of the sonic architecture for Faith No More frontman Mike Patton’s avant-garde metal outfit Fantomas and grindcore outfit Venomous Concept.
While there’s no denying Osborne’s
influence in many genres, he said it wasn’t something he really thinks about.
“To be honest I don’t really see how we’ve influenced anything, but it’s cool that people think so. I’d say that we definitely have a few “brother” bands who are on a similar wavelength to what we’re doing but that’s about where it ends for me.”
Osborne who was only in the country last year for a co-headlining tour with the Melvins and New York noisemakers Helmet is heading back our way next month to brandish his acoustic stylings.
“Man, I can’t wait,’ he said.“It is a long flight though, it really does
take it out of you but I love to work so I’ve got no reason to complain.”
When the Australian tour wraps up, Osborne said he’ll be looking to put the finishing touches on the Melvins 22nd record - Hold it In - due in October, although he added that Fantomas fans shouldn’t hold their breath for any new activity.
“It really doesn’t look like Fantomas will do another record but you never really know - it’s totally up to Mike,” he said.
“The new Melvins will be out in October so we’ll be doing a fair bit of touring after that - it never ends and I love it.”

Stepping into the light
With his last Australian jaunt as part of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s mammoth
High Hopes tour earlier this year, sax player Jake Clemons’ return trip, promoting his debut EP Embracing Light will be a decid-edly more intimate affair - not that he is complaining.
This upcoming tour will be Clemons’ third time on our shores - his first with the ubiqui-tous E Street Band’s 2013 Wrecking Ball tour.
“On that [Wrecking Ball] tour, I really didn’t know what to expect because I’d never visited Australia before - it really is an amazing place and I can’t wait to get back.”
While Clemons is perhaps best known as a sax player, Embracing Light showcases him as a man of many talents with his sax, guitar and songwriting stylings coming to the fore.
From the horn-drenched Song for Hope to the bluesy Embracing Light and the high energy rocker Without this is a scarily well-realised debut - especially given that the lion’s share of it was written and recorded during E Street Band commitments.
“A lot of the EP was written on tour - we were in the middle of the Wrecking Ball tour
and it really was quite a challenge trying to fit everything in,” he said.
Clemons added that the E Street Band were invaluable and incredibly generous when it came to giving advice on the direc-tion of the EP and when that band contains the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren and Max Weinberg, that advice shouldn’t be taken for granted.
“I honestly think that there isn’t a better band in the world and they were all really gracious with their advice - particularly Bruce. I remember him saying to me before a show just after I started playing with the E Street Band “you don’t deserve to be here and you’ve got to keep earning it - I don’t deserve to be here either and I’ve got to keep earning it”, which I think is pretty good advice.”
Clemons, who joined the E Street Band after his uncle and original member Clar-ence Clemons passed away in 2011, said he was fortunate to be able to pick up his uncle’s mantle
“Clarence and I were extremely close,” he said.
“I was lucky enough to have grown up around those guys and I was incredibly humbled to be asked to pay tribute to whim in such a way - I still am.”

When Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) first got together, their romantic connection was intense - but ten years and two kids later, the flame of their love needs a spark. To kick things up a notch, they decide - why not? - to make a video of themselves trying out every position in The Joy of Sex in one marathon three-hour ses-sion. It seems like a great idea - until they discover that their most private video is no longer private. With their reputations on the line, they know they’re just one click away from being laid bare to the world... but as their race to reclaim their video leads to a night they’ll never forget, they’ll find that their video will expose even more than they bargained for.
Directed by Jake Kasdan (Bad Teach-er, Walk Hard) this riotous comedy stars Jason Segel, Cameron Diaz, Rob Corrdry, Rob Lowe and Ellie Kemper.
Blackfella Charlie is out of sorts. The intervention is making life more diffi-cult on his remote community, what with the proper policing of whitefella laws now. So, Charlie takes off, to live the old way, but in so doing sets off a chain of events in his life that has him return to his community chastened, and somewhat the wiser.
Directed by Rolf De Heer (The Track-er, Bad Boy Bubby), this film won David Gulpilil a best actor nod at the Cannes Film Festival.

Set against the breathtaking scenery of the French Alps, this reworking of a classic French tale sees a lonely boy, Sebastian, played by an adorable Felix Bossuet, form and unlikely friend-ship with “la bête”, a misunderstood mountain dog being hunted by local villagers - young Sebastian lovingly names her Belle.
Their friendship forms at the height of the Second World War, as Nazis occupy the mountainside village as part of a clandes-tine operation to stop persecuted Jews using the Alps as a pas-sage to freedom in neighbouring Switzerland.
This lovely film hammers home all the lessons about trust and loyalty you’d expect from a family-friendly French fable and there’s plenty of heart-warming moments between Sebastian and his canine companion that are sure to bring tears to the eyes of animal lovers.
It’s utterly delightful.
Having been left disappointed with the ending of the 2011 re-boot of this iconic 70s sci-fi franchise, I approached its sequel with a due sense of caution. Happily though, I needn’t have worried as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes more than makes up for its predecessor’s shortcomings.
The story picks up with head ape Caesar leading his ever-growing nation of genetically evolved apes and focuses on the grim aftermath of the revolution they started in the first film. A small group of survivors - Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke and Keri Russell contact the apes in the hopes getting them to restore a power station and a fragile peace is reached. However, as is the case with these things, both sides are brought to the brink of war although, there is much more focus on dramatic tension than vacuous CGI bells and whistles.
Sure, there is plenty of CGI to be had with all of the motion-captured apes and all, but the trick of this film is that you tend to forget that you are watching computer generated simians.

When it comes to buffet dining in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, the Silver Dolphin Restaurant at Wests
Cardiff has always been one of the more popular options. After my visit there on the weekend, my first in quite some time, it wasn’t hard to see why.
This is one buffet where the word variety would be an understatement - think fresh seafood, pastas, salads, yum cha, an array of roast meats and a hefty selection of Chinese favourites and you’ve only begun to scratch the surface.
After being ushered to our seats by the ever-friendly and helpful staff, my dining partner and I made a beeline for the buffet, with my eyes firmly locked on the honey chicken. This iconic dish is served in nearly every Chinese restaurant in the country and its quality generally serves as a good litmus test for the quality of the rest of the menu. I have to say that Silver Dolphin’s take was an absolute winner - one of the best I’ve had in quite some time. The beautifully-cooked chicken was encased in a super-crispy coating and the sauce was simply delicious - not too sweet and just the right amount. The accompa-nying fried rice was another standout - full of flavour and cooked to fluffy perfection.
My dining partner decided to start with a yum cha selection and a light and perfectly balanced steamed seafood bun and a sticky rice and mushroom parcel were impressive to say the least.
Still eager to sample more Chinese classics, my second helping of Mongolian beef (and even more of that delicious fried rice) was another winner. Not too salty (as some lesser dished tend to be) and with

some tender beef slivers, this was a dish to write home about.
My dining partner chose the roast pork for second helping and her first comment was “perfect”. The succulent meat, accompanied with a tart apple sauce was a taste to behold while the ridiculously crunchy crackling took this dish to another level.
With our appetites fully satiated, my dining partner and I left Silver Dolphin already planning our next visit. I suggest you do, too.

New York, arguably the biggest competi-tion in the world, Burlesque Idol is head-ing to Newcastle.
Producers Sarina del Fuego and Lola LaBelle told TE that the concept behind the show was to help support emerging burlesque talent in a show that features more titillating fun than you can poke a stick at.
“Without giving too much away, Burlesque Idol is a really fun, glamorous and tongue-in-cheek show that caters to all types of burlesque - from classic, to gothic and everything in between,,” del Fuego said.
“The show features an array of rising burlesque talent in each city we visit as well as plenty of audience participation, raffles, and a best-dressed competition.”
If that wasn’t enough, the show will also feature the Noir Review - a film noir-inspired, blues-soaked cabaret show featuring a live band and narrated by an unseen detective that has already wowed audiences at the Sydney and Adelaide fringe festivals.
“With the Noir Revue, the whole mood of the night changes to something a little more mysterious,” LaBelle explained.
“All of the performers will be performing to live music and there’ll be a little bit of circus, cabaret, crooning and, of course burlesque.
There’s no denying that burlesque has undergone quite a resurgence in popular-ity over the past ten years or so and LaBelle put this down to the fact that their was a certain egalitarianism in the artform.

“I think that burlesque is a very grass-roots movement that really anyone can be a part of ,” she said.
‘It’s all about finding your own creative voice and also an awful lot of fun, which is certainly an attractive proposition.”

Getting her freak on
If you read enough articles about music you’ll start to notice the same words used many times over to describe
different artists. That’s why it’s refreshing when you come across a phrase like the one best-selling author Neil Gaiman used to describe singer/songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke. After hearing Kate’s voice Gaiman said it was like “being f***ed by butterflies.”
“It was excellent and that’s probably one of my favourite comments as well,” Miller-Heidke said.
“It’s so supremely evocative,” she laughed.Miller-Heidke is very much deserving of
such a description. She uses her classically trained voice to add an operatic element to her alt-pop music, but it’s not all beauty and light.
“I guess I have a relatively experimental approach to using my voice and I’ve probably got a bigger range of dynamics and tones and just fun stuff to use my voice as an instru-ment and play around with it,” she said.
“I think I probably do that more than most other singer/songwriters, particularly in a live context, it’s fun to use those textures to kind of freak people out,” she laughed.
Miller-Heidke’s live shows are theatrical, intriguing and beautiful and, come August, the talented songstress will be bringing her live show to Newcastle City Hall.

Joining her will be her full band, which includes husband and musical soulmate Keir Nuttall.
“I think because we know each other so well and you know, we’re best friends, we’re definitely on the same musical wave length and we can, onstage you know, we play together so much that we can almost communicate without words, without
sounding cheesy,” Miller-Heidke said.“But yeah, obviously we send each other a
bit insane and it’s nice to have the rest of the band and the crew as a bit of a buffer zone sometimes.”
The August tour will see Miller-Heidke performing tracks from her album O Vertigo which was released in March. The album, her fourth studio release, came after her
split with Sony and she decided to produce the album using crowd-funding through PledgeMusic.
“It was incredible and yeah the support I got through that was overwhelming,” she said.
“I’m not sure if I would do it again next time. I think the world is changing so quickly it seems like it’s constantly in a state of flux so who knows where we’ll be in six months.”
After the tour, Miller-Heidke will be heading off to the UK for a string of shows before she makes her way to New York in October where she will perform with the Metropolitan Opera. The talented singer is also currently writing a children’s opera for Opera Australia.
“It’s a new opera, adapting a book by Shaun Tan called The Rabbits and yeah, I guess they kind of just took a leap of faith in asking me but I’ve loved being involved,” she said.
While speaking to Miller-Heidke you start to see that her path was never going to be one that involved mainstream pop.
“I like music that transports me or tells a story. I really like the theatre. I’m going to see Into the Woods next month, which I’m very excited about so musicals are a big thing for me,” she said.
“As I get older, I don’t like stuff that’s too loud - it feels like I’m getting punched in the ears,” she said.

Sitting pretty in the city
While their debut EP Heights taking cues from the likes of My Bloody Valentine and
the Jesus and Mary Chain - with its fuzzed-out sprawling shoegaze psych, Melbourne three-piece Pretty City have taken a bit of a different tack with their latest crop of singles.
Piece of the Puzzle, released at the begin-ning of the year and their latest single Roll On are two slices of big riffing rock that recalls the wall-of-sound swagger of the likes of Deep Purple and Cream.
After an East Coast run promoting Piece of the Puzzle in March, the lads are wast-ing no time with their Roll On tour kicking off last week.
“It’s been fantastic - we’ve really hit the ground running this year,” guitarist Johnny Moretti told TE.
Moretti said that the change in direc-tion for the band came largely from principal songwriter, Hugh Matthews rediscovering the rock and roll majesty of 60s rock supergroup Cream.
“The first EP was a bit more 90s shoe-gaze-influenced than the new songs,” he said.
“Roll On especially is a real psych 1960s rock track which was written by Hugh who had been getting right back into bands like Cream at the time and we really wanted to capture some of that raw rock and roll vibe.”
There is a palpable live vibe on both tracks however Moretti explained that there was more post-tinkering on the new singles than on Heights - testament to the technical capabilities of producer Jez Giddings at Melbourne’s Hothouse Studios as well as the quality of the songs themselves.
“The EP was recorded pretty much all live - we overdubbed some vocals and keys - with this one though we tracked everything live but we overdubbed all the guitars and I think the fact that there is that raw, live vibe on the songs is a testament to how good the songs are.”
