2 Day TripsEastport Peninsula and Terra Nova National Park

Day 1 Marvel at the white sands of the Eastport Peninsula (J5) beaches where you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the Atlantic Ocean. Nine kilometres of trails ranging in difficulty stretch from the towns of Sandy Cove to Salvage (J5) – the most photographed community in the province. Get a glimpse of rare Beothuk artifacts at the museum in Burnside (J5). Enjoy the art of local artists at the House of Diamonds in Glovertown (I5), and return to Eastport (J5) to enjoy the evening at the theatre.

Day 2 Travel to North America’s most easterly national park - Terra Nova National Park (J6). Tour the Visitor̀ s Information Centre to get an in-depth look at the aquarium’s tidal creatures. Take to the water either by kayak, a marine interpreting boat tour, or venture underneath the surface with a snorkelling excursion. Return to dry land to explore the more than 100 km of hiking trails.

King’s Point & Baie Verte

Day 1 Awake to the sound of pristine nature on the banks of Indian River in Springdale (F4). Journey to King’s Point (F3) for a day filled with adventure. Suggestions include hiking the 8km Alexander Murray Hiking Trail, refreshing yourself at the 800 foot Rattling Brook Falls, visiting the local pottery studio, viewing the 50 foot skeleton of a Humpback whale, and dropping in for a “warm up” at the local store.

Day 2 Learn of the French influence along the Baie Verte Peninsula and witness the ruggedness of the tiny coastal communities. Learn about the past at local museums and be served lunch by staff dressed in 1700s French garb in La Scie (G3). Run your hands along the outcrops of the province’s oldest quarry – the Dorset Soapstone Quarry in Fleur de Lys (F2).

Grand Falls-Windsor & Botwood

Day 1 Start the day by travelling the same river highway as the Beothuks (E5). Pile in for a day long rafting trip down 13 kms of the mighty Exploits River. Witness the vigour of wild Atlantic salmon on their annual journey upriver to spawn. Get an underwater look at these majestic creatures during an evening excursion to the Salmonid Interpretation Centre (G5), which is the site of one of the largest salmon enhancement projects in North America. Sit back and enjoy local music and a play during a dinner theatre.

Day 2 Be a captain in the seat of a flight simulator at the aviation museum in Botwood (G4). Explore how the town helped change the face of aviation before heading to Glover’s Harbour (G4) to experience the shear size of the largest giant squid ever caught. In Norris Arm (G4), visit an authentic Fox Moth aircraft hanger that now houses the history and artifacts of the region.

3 Day TripsFogo Island & Change Islands

Day 1 Catch the ferry in Farewell (H3)for a short ferry ride to the serene fishing village of Change Islands ((I3) known for its well-preserved fishing architecture. Enjoy a unique tour “up the tickle” in a 100-year-old make-and break vessel. Visit the province’s only Newfoundland Pony refuge. Shop for locally produced crafts and garments, or take a leisurely seaside stroll on the Squid Jigger’s Trail. Sleep the sleep of a thousand dreams in an authentic fishing merchants home.

Day 2 Take the 20 minute ferry ride to neighbouring Fogo Island (I3), the largest inhabited island off the province’s coast. Go to Tilting (I3), the province’s first provincial registered heritage district that’s soaked in Gaelic culture. See traditional Newfoundland architecture with an intimate look at the Dwyer House. In Joe Batt’s Arm (I3), marvel at the modern architecture of the artist’s residence, enjoy a culinary experience infused with local flavours, and compare shoe sizes with a sorceress at the oddball Witch’s Foot.

Day 3 Hike Brimstone Head (I3), known as one of the four corners of the earth by the Flat Earth Society. Visit local art galleries and quaint museums. Geocache along the trails that lead to relocated communities. Catch the ferry back to the mainland refreshed and ready to continue exploring Adventure Central Newfoundland.

Twillingate & Newtown

Day 1 Marvel at the splendour of historic Twillingate (H3) – Iceberg Capital of the World. View 10,000-year-old leviathans of ice from the many coastal trails, or take to the water for a more intimate experience. Humpback whales frequent the area to play amongst the

icebergs. Return to shore to sample the wide selection of locally produced wines strewn with natural flavours, and visit a true Newfoundland Fishing Heritage Museum. End the evening with a laugh and a traditional Newfoundland meal at a local dinner theatre.

Day 2 Leisurely drive “the loop” through small coastal communities with New-Wes-Valley as your destination. Along the way, learn of the province’s extinct natives at the Boyd’s Cove (H4)Beothuk Interpretation Centre. Take a relaxing stroll through the trails of the Carmanville (I4) Wetlands and witness native animals in their natural environment. Stop to saunter along 11 kilometres of secluded sandy beach in Musgrave Harbour (I4).

Day 3 Step back in time as you explore the Barbour Living Heritage Village in Newtown (J4), a town often referred to as the “Venice of Newfoundland”. Learn what life was like for a typical fishing merchant family as you wonder through historical buildings, a sealing interpretation centre, and mend nets with a modern day fishermen. Afterwards, get a behind-the-scene look at the art of printmaking in an authentic c. 1890 general store in Brookfield (J4).

Coast of Bays

Day 1 Start your Coast of Bays experience in the Town of Harbour Breton (F8). Tour Sunny Cottage Heritage Centre, the former residence of a local merchant. Picnic at Rocky Point Lighthouse before hiking the 9 kilometres to Connaigre Head where you can experience breathtaking views of the fjords that make up this region. Visit the Elliott Premises to learn the history of the Newman and Company in this region, and the areas relationship with the sea. End your day relaxing seaside on the unique red sands at Deadman’s Cove.

Day 2 Head to Hermitage (F8) to catch the 90 minute passenger ferry to scenic McCallum (F8). This isolated community is considered one of the most reminiscent to a 1900’s Newfoundland outport. With no vehicle traffic, and only boardwalk paths to meander around the community, a visit to McCallum is sure to help any visitor relax and soak up the area’s natural beauty.

Day 3 Catch the ferry back to Hermitage today and head north. Along the way, stop at the Mi’kmaw Discovery Centre to learn the culture and history

of the aboriginal people of the region. Be sure to purchase one of the many traditional crafts made by residents of the Miawpukek Reserve - the only first nations reserve in the province.

Day 3 Fogo Island

Continue exploring Fogo Island’s 11 communities that contain everything from local galleries, museums and craft shops, to unique architecture and authentic fishing premises. Hike Brimstone Head, one of the four corners of the earth according to the Flat Earth Society, and discover the rich Irish culture of Tilting (I3), a registered heritage district. Depart Fogo Island on route for Twillingate (H3) where you will finish the day being amused at a local theatre.

Day 4 Twillingate

Known as the Iceberg Capital of the World, Twillingate (H3) is the place visitors come to marvel at 10,000-year-old leviathans of ice. Hop onboard a local boat tour to get a closer look, or to catch a glimpse of the many whale species that frequent the shores. Return to land to taste the array of locally produced wines, some made with iceberg water. Watch a majestic sun set from one of the many coastal hiking trails or from the cliffs at Long Point Lighthouse.

Day 5 Coast of Bays

Welcome to Hiking Central

Take to the road to the Coast of Bays with Harbour Breton (F8) as your destination. Tour Sunny Cottage Heritage Centre - the former residence of a local merchant - and the Elliott Premises to learn the areas relationship with the sea. Picnic at Rocky Point Lighthouse prior to hiking Gun Hill for spectacular views of Harbour Breton. Stop at the Mi’kmaw Discovery Centre on your way north to learn the culture and history of the area’s aboriginal people.

Day 6 Grand Falls - Windsor

Tour the Salmonid Interpretation Centre located on the Grand Falls (G5), site of one of North America’s most successful salmon enhancement projects. Learn the lifecycle of Atlantic salmon, and witness the vigour of these fish as you watch them in the wild through underwater windows. Stop at the Mary March Provincial Museum to hear the history of the Central region and learn about the Beothuks who inhabited this area. Try your hand at axe throwing and get a new perspective of the life of a logger as you walk through a logging camp at the Logger’s Life Museum.

Day 7 Triton & King’s Point

Be weary of the sea monster of Crescent Lake as you meander the 10 km Hazelnut Hiking Trail in Robert’s Arm (F4). Proceed to Triton (G3) to view the skeleton of a 43 foot Sperm whale before dining on locally caught and cooked squid rings. Journey to King’s Point (F3) to view another whale skeleton – a 50 foot Humpback Whale. Stroll along the harbour to a world renowned pottery studio that is inspired by the sea. Eat seaside in advance of enjoying the spectacular views of the 800 foot Rattling Brook Falls.

7 Day TripDay 1 Terra Nova & Eastport

Start your adventure filled day in Terra Nova National Park (I6) – North America’s most easterly national park. Hold marine life in your hands at the Visitor’s Information Centre before heading out to snorkel the shallow inlets, enjoy an educational boat tour, or take to the 100 kms of hiking trails. Venture west to the Eastport Peninsula. Marvel at local art at the House of Diamonds in Glovertown (I5). Spend the evening strolling along the sandy beaches of Eastport (J5) and Sandy Cove.

Day 2 Newtown & Fogo Island

Explore the life of a fishing merchant at the Barbour Living Heritage Village in Newtown (J4), which is known as the “Venice of Newfoundland”. Wander through the historic homes, an authentic fishing stage and a sealing interpretation centre. Catch the ferry at Farewell (H3) for the 45 minute ferry ride bound for Fogo Island (I3). Check into a local bed and breakfast prior to enjoying the island’s culinary experience. Dine on traditional Newfoundland food with a modern twist, followed by savoury gourmet ice cream infused with flavours from the island.
