Dear Fellow National Law Associate,

We would like to begin this newsletter by congratulating the New York Giants and their fans for their victory over the New England Patriots in Superbowl LVI. In a moment that felt like “deja-vu all over again,” the Giants defeated the Patriots in the Superbowl for thesecond time in four years.

Pictured left, Mario Manningham pulls in a clutch 38 yard catch which propelled the Giants to victory. Pictured to right, Eli Manning, the Superbowl MVP. Eli bested

Tom Brady in his second Superbowl showdown with him.

As NLEA members were gathering for the February Meeting at Bobby Van’s, the New York Giants, along with millions of their fans, celebrated the Giants Superbowl LVI victory with a ticker-tape parade down the Canyon of Heroes. The victory is the Giants’ fourth Superbowl win in the history of the storied franchise. Millions of fans linedBroadway for the two hour event that ended at City Hall, where the Giants’ players were presented with the “Key to the City.”

The NYPD did a wonderful job policing the event. In fact, the NYPD expanded the parade route from four years ago which enabled hundreds of thousands more fans to cheer on their gridiron heroes. The previous parade route had the parade turn east down Chambers street before entering into City Hall at Centre Street. As the map below indicates, the 2012 parade continued north up Broadway before heading east on Worth Street; four blocks further north than Chambers Street. This route took the parade past Foley Square, where tens of thousands of fans waited with rolls of toilet paper, footballs and signs, eagerly awaiting the parade contingent. We extend kudos to the NYPD and parade organizers for looking out for the fans.

Linsanity and the Rangers

Combine the Giants Superbowl victory with the emergence of the streaking New York Knicks and their new star Jeremy Lin, and the “best record in the NHL” New York Rangers, and New York sports fans have had a lot to cheer about this February. With the mighty Yankees looming on the horizon, 2012 promises to possibly be an historic sports year in New York. Now if we can only get the Mets on board! Let’s hope that our team’s successes bring corresponding success to our favorite venues!

February Meeting

Speaking of favorite venues, we held our February luncheon meeting at Bobby Van’s in downtown Manhattan. The meeting was held in the vaunted “vault” room, so called because the room is a converted bank vault. The luncheon coincided with the Giants’ parade, so the energy in the room was buzzing. Although a formal affair, several members disclosed to Kevin Fitz that they were wearing Giants attire underneath their suits!

The luncheon was a great success, as the meeting was well attended, and spirits were even higher than normal. As usual, the food was outstanding. Several members commented on the perfection of their filet mignons. The gathering got off without a hitch, with the only complaint from the membership being that it “went too fast.”

Chauncey Parker was our guest speaker. Chauncey is the Executive Assistant District Attorney for Crime Prevention Strategies of the New York County District Attorney’s Office. Chauncey is also the Director of the New York/New Jersey High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), a federally-funded program that invests in federal, state and local law enforcement partnerships designed to disrupt the market for illegal drugs.

Chauncey’s illustrious career has placed him in numerous leadership positions during his 23 years in law enforcement. Chauncey is the former Director of the New York State, Division of Criminal Justice Services and Commissioner of the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. Prior to these appointments, Chauncey served for 10 years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York under Mary Jo White, serving in the Organized Crime Unit. Moreover, Chauncey is a member of the Board of the Police Athletic League, Harlem Day Charter School and Joyful Heart Foundation.

Chauncey truly leads by example, and demonstrated that when he spoke to our group. We would like to thank Chauncey for taking time from his busy schedule to spend a few moments with the membership to discuss his diverse career experiences.

*Chauncey accepting a gift of thanks from NLEA President, Kevin Fitzgerald.

Condolences

The NLEA regrets to announce the passing of long time NLEA member Tom Buda III. Tom was the longtime Secretary of the Retired Detective's Association of the City of New York and most recently a member of the Board of Directors. Tom’s guidance and mentoring to the RDNY membership will never be forgotten. The NLEA sends our condolences to Tom’s family and friends.

Congratulations

NYPD Reunion

At the moment the funeral mass for Detective Peter Figoski of the 75 Precinct began on December 19, 2011 in Babylon, Long Island, a message was broadcast over all public safety radios in Broward County, Florida. Breaking into the busy police, fire and rescue frequencies, the message from Sheriff Al Lamberti ordered a moment of silence in observation of the solemn procession more than 1200 miles north. In recognition of that noble gesture, the National Law Enforcement Associates presented a pewter wall plate to Sheriff Lamberti at the Annual NYPD Reunion held on February 9th in Pompano Beach. Each February, during the same week, this reunion is held by retired NYPD members in Florida. Our own Ken Battcher, a retired Lieutenant Commander of the 81 precinct squad, attended the occasion, and presented the plate to Al Berkowitz, who accepted the award on behalf of Sheriff Lamberti. Al Berkowitz is retired from the New York Transit Police Department, and now serves as the Special Assistant to Sheriff Lamberti. Al is also the President of the Broward County 10-13 Club. Al said the NLEA plate will hang in a prominent spot in the Sheriff Department’s Fort Lauderdale Headquarters as a reminder of our brotherhood. Congratulations to Sheriff Lamberti for this well-deserved honor.

Heroes Welcome at LaGuardia Airport

A military transport plane recently experienced mechanical problems and was forced to land at LaGuardia Airport. Upon arrival, the servicemen were absolutely surprised and overwhelmed by the incredible "Heroes Welcome Home" that they received. The crew didn't expect any sort of fanfare, but you can see from the pictures that LaGuardia, including members of the Port Authority Police Department, went all out. The troops on board wish to thank all those who made them feel so welcome!

Deadly Lesson for All Law Enforcement

Please take a good look at the following video (click on the link). The video is of a news report fromMobile, Alabama. After viewing you will realize the importance of preaching sound tactics with prisoners at all times. For those who cannot view the video, it depicts a perpetrator on a new arrest being brought to the local jail by an officer from the Mobile Police Department. The prisoner had a makeshift knife hidden within a locket around a chain on his neck. While being escorted to the transport cruiser, the prisoner seems to pull the knife from the locket, while being filmed! Once at the jail, the prisoner managed to fatally stab the transporting officer in the neck, and escape with the officer’s firearm in the officer’s vehicle. The prisoner later shot a responding officer before his own life came to an end. Please share this video with all law enforcement members you know, both active and retired.
