News from Around the World ACTIVE AND INTELLIGENT PACKAGINGÐTHE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS `Active packaging' is packaging that is speci®cally designed to change the condition of the packed food to extend shelf-life, improve safety or enhance sensory properties. `Intelligent packa- ging', in contrast, is designed to sense the environ- ment and/or convey information to the user. A new publication from CCFRA Ð the proceedings of an international conference held in September 2000 Ð outlines the latest developments and current trends with active and intelligent packa- ging. The conference brought together experts on active and intelligent packaging from around the world and the proceedings contains a summary of each presentation together with copies of the visual aids used on the day. MICROBIOLOGICAL RISK ASSESSMENTÐNEW GUIDELINE No. 28 PUBLISHED BY CCFRA Microbiological risk assessment MRA) offers a route to improved food safety. It provides a scienti®cally-based approach to assessing the risks presented by speci®c microbiological hazards, such as infectious pathogens or microbial toxins, in speci®c foods. Ascertaining the level of micro- biological risk associated with a food can facilitate better control of that hazard. MRA is gaining international recognition. It will, in the future, be widely accepted in assuring food safety. The new guideline, entitled An Introduction to the Practice of Microbiological Risk Assessment for Food Industry Applications, provides a basic intro- duction to the concepts of MRA Ð what it is, what it is not, how to undertake it and how it relates to existing quality systems. .
