This column is a forum to inform the ther-mal spray community on current activi-ties in institutes and research centers ac-tive in the field of the thermal spray.Research efforts carried out in these orga-nizations are oftentimes the starting pointof significant developments of the tech-nology that will have an impact on theway coatings are produced and used in in-dustry. New materials, more efficientspray processes, better diagnostic tools,and clearer understanding of the chemicaland physical processes involved duringspraying are examples of such develop-ments making possible the production ofhighly consistent performance coatingsfor use in more and more demanding ap-plications encountered in the industry.
This column includes articles giving anoverview of current activities or a focuson a significant breakthrough resultingfrom research efforts carried out in insti-tutes and research centers around theworld. Sandia National Laboratories’ ThermalSpray Research Laboratory (TSRL) is alarge experimental facility dedicated tounderstanding process-microstructure-property relationships in thermal spraycoatings. The TSRL is located on Kirt-
land Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM.It is part of Sandia National Laboratories’Materials and Process Sciences Center.The Materials and Process Sciences Cen-ter provides scientific and engineeringexpertise in materials techniques to sup-port the missions of Sandia NationalLaboratories, including stewardship ofthe U.S. nuclear stockpile. The primarymission of the Thermal Spray ResearchLaboratory is to provide technical supportto the U.S. Department of Energy for itsneeds related to thermal spray coatings.The TSRL supports process develop-ment, coating design, and knowledge de-velopment for thermal spray coating ap-plications within the Department ofEnergy.
The TSRL is led by Dr. Aaron C. Hall andDr. Rodney L. Williamson. The remain-ing support staff of engineers and techni-cians at the TSRL have nearly 100 yearsof combined experience in thermal spraytechnology and process control develop-ment. Over the past 25 years, the TSRLhas contributed significantly to the devel-opment of the cold spray, wire flamespray, and powder flame spray coatingprocesses. The TSRL is currently work-ing to develop an understanding of micro-structure-property relationships in verylow pressure (thin film) plasma spraycoatings.
The TSRL currently employs six engi-neers and technicians, one visiting profes-sor, and two summer students. Labora-tory facilities consist of a 2500 ft2 highbay space and numerous smaller spacesdedicated to feedstock analysis, instru-mentation assembly, and machining op-erations. The TSRL has four spray sta-
tions; three are traditional thermal spraybooths equipped with six-axis robots(Staubli RX-60, ABB IRB 140, and anABB IRB 6600). The fourth spray stationis a 1000 L3 vacuum plasma spray cham-ber equipped with enough pumping ca-pacity to maintain 1 Torr while operatinga Metco 03C plasma torch. Processesavailable at the TSRL include air plasmaspray, vacuum plasma spray, very lowpressure (thin film) plasma spray, twinwire arc spray, high-velocity oxyfuelspray, wire flame spray, powder flamespray, and cold spray. The TSRL main-tains a suite of particle diagnostics equip-ment on-site for characterizing thermalspray feedstocks (Beckman—Coulter la-ser particle size analyzer), investigatingthermal spray processes (DPV-2000,Tecnar G3, Polytech L2F, control vision,and optical spectrometry systems), andcharacterizing coating properties (xenon-flash thermal diffusivity, helium oycnom-etry).
While the TSRL’s primary mission is tosupport the needs of the DOE, the TSRLcan and does accept work from other fed-eral agencies and from U.S. industry. Thestatus of Sandia National Laboratories asa federally funded research and develop-ment center specifically precludes Sandiafrom competing with U.S. industry.

Guide to Surface EngineeringMeasurement Standards
National Institute of Standards and Tech-nology (NIST), Gaithersburg, MD, haspublished a guide to standards for themeasurement and characterization of in-organic materials surfaces, in cooperationwith the ASM International Surface Engi-neering Committee. NIST RecommendedPractice Guide: Surface EngineeringMeasurement Standards for Inorganic
Materials (Special Publication 960-9) isintended to aid the technical and scientificcommunity by identifying relevant stan-dard methods for measurements of perti-nent surface properties and characteris-tics such as surface chemistry, surfacetexture, hardness, cleanliness, residualstress, sampling thickness, and more. TheGuide directs the user to appropriate stan-dards based on material type, property ofinterest, and measurement or character-ization method. Each summary includes a
general description of the standard, the in-tended application, specimen require-ments, type of data produced, and the lim-its of the method.
