Launching Ceremony Of Patrol Vessel For Sri Lanka Coast Guard

A special launching ceremony was held in November to mark the commissioning of

two 30 meter class design and built patrol vessels for Sri Lanka Coast Guard which are being built in Japan by a Japanese Shipbuilding Company under JICA’s Grant aid assistance scheme. In celebrating the launch of the first vessel out of the two, on 6th November, a Japanese traditional Shinto style ceremony was held in Tokyo in the presence of Hon. State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene, and His Excellency Prof. Dammika Ganganath Dissanayake, the resident Ambassador to Sri Lanka in Japan and distinguished invitees representing both countries. The two vessels are expected to be deployed in July 2018 after completing necessary inspections of Japanese standards.

Universal Health Coverage - Workplace Health Promotion Programme

Dr. Virginie Mallawaarachchi, a Consultant Community Physician attached to the

National Non Communicable Disease Unit, Ministry of Health conducted a workshop on life style related diseases control on 7th & 8th November 2017 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo.Dr. Mallawaarachchi conducted this workshop based on the activities laid down in her action plan prepared in Japan. She had participated in the Life style related diseases prevention (A) training programme held in Japan during 7th May 2017 to 11th June 2017.

Following are some of the activities included in the workshop.• Check fasting blood sugar and total cholesterol level in all participants.• Assessment of height and weight and calculate the BMI .

The series of workshops she has planned includes conducting programmes for upper level managers in two selected Ministries in Sri Lanka. The main objectives of conducting these programmes for selected upper level managers are to motivate them to adopt healthy life style and to use them as changing agents at their respective Ministries. Municipal Solid Waste Material Recovery Facility at Karadiyana through Verification Survey with the Private sector for Disseminating Japanese Technologies.JICA extended support for construction of Municipal Solid Waste Material Recovery Facility through Japanese private company – Recycle Co. Ltd. Recycle Co. Ltd., started in Chiba, Japan in 1981, has long experience in collection and management of treatment facilities for general waste. The company has a high technology to separate recyclable items from mixed waste and convert organic waste into fertilizer.Sri Lanka has been facing several environmental problems such as water contamination, air pollution, and odour caused by Municipal Solid Waste

JICA Supports Municipal Waste Management Project At Karadiyana

(MSW). Karadiyana garbage dumping facility receives nearly 500 tons of MSW a day. Garbage dumped over decades is reaching the maximum capacity of the dumping site and causing serious environmental problems to surrounding areas.With this Waste Material Recovery Facility newly established under JICA Verification survey, out of 500 tons of MSW, 25 tons/day is converted into valuable organic fertilizer.

Expected outcomes of the project:• Uplifting livelihood and social status of poor people: The project expects to employ eight people from the neighbourhood to run the plant which generates living condition of the people.• Improvement of Environment of landfill area and controlling epidemic situation and harmful pests/ insect: This plant reduces 12.9 tons of organic waste per day. By controlling of methane gas this project helps to reduce approximately 2,889 tons of Co2 per year.Sri Lanka has been facing

office held an ODA tour to introduce JICA’s activities in Sri Lanka to potential investors of JICA bonds*1.More than 20 participants from securities and banking companies visited Japanese ODA project sites, such as Empowerment of the Women in the Recovery from the Conflict –Sari Recycle Project, the Project for the Improvement of Central Functions of Jaffna Teaching Hospital, Verification Survey with the Private Sector for Slope Disaster Technology*2, Greater Kandy Water Supply Project, and New Bridge Construction Project over the Kelani River.We received positive feedback from many

“It was amazing and unforgettable experience in playing Blind Football

game in Japan”, said Rasika Lasanthi (Teacher, Kottawa Dharmapala College) and Pubudu Sureka De Silva (Teacher Welapura Maha Vidyalaya, Kalutara), both who visited Japan representing Western Province for training on Promotion of Social Participation of Persons with Disabilities through Sports under JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Programme (KCCP) during the period 24 Sep ~ 25 Oct 2017. “During our training in Japan we had great opportunity to exercise and play

several games designed for special education children. Playing and learning Blind Football game at Japanese Para Sport Association was one of the most interesting and very beneficial games, which could be applied in Sri Lankan special education sector. Further, exercising of Flying Disk game at JICA Nihonmatsu and Wheel Chair activities at Co –Innovative Laboratories (COIL) Organization Tsukuba were some of the activities that gave us more sensible approach to initiate those techniques into our education system.”

Japan’s Rugby Coaches Conduct Coaching Camp For Lankan Women Rugby Players

Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV), rugby coaches

Yuri Ito and Makoto Mori assigned to the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) conducted a coaching camp in collaboration with the visiting Japanese National Women’s Rugby Team.This coaching camp was conducted at the Colombo Race Course Grounds on 12th October 2017, ahead of the Rugby Sevens Tournament held in Sri Lanka.Japanese National Women’s Rugby Team Players spent their valuable time training Sri Lankan women rugby players, with the aim of enhancing their rugby skills and performance levels. At present, SLRFU is paying much attention towards the development of women’s rugby, since the young women currently engaged in the game lack much needed experience and exposure to high quality rugby.

JICA Volunteers Caring For The Elderly

In the light of the increase in Sri Lanka’s aging population, it is becoming more

and more important to ensure that its future senior citizens stay healthy. With this in mind, the JICA Volunteer Program has, for over a decade, dispatched volunteers in support of the elderly, in order to ensure that they live healthy lives, whilst remaining productive and enjoying a high quality of life.

The JICA Volunteer Program’s activities in support of senior citizens of Sri Lanka has been conducted mainly in collaboration with the National Secretariat for Elders (NSFE). Most of the activities conducted by volunteers in this field are conducted through senior citizens’ committees (at divisional and grama-niladari level) or at elders’ homes and daycare centers. Whilst the aim of conducting such activities is to improve and sustain the physical and mental health of the elderly, a secondary objective of non-communicable disease prevention and transfer of knowledge to caregivers (e.g. those in charge of elder’s homes, family members of elders, and

workshops on the subject of caring for the elderly. These workshops are conducted for the purpose of educating members of elders societies, developing skills of field officers and the staff of elders’ homes and day centers . Together with local resource persons, JICA volunteers (in fields such as physiotherapy and occupational therapy) also contribute towards these workshops.
