TERM 3 WEEK 6— 31 AUGUST 2016

News St Joseph’s From the Leadership Team

Dear Parents and Carers, Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day certainly highlighted the strong sense of community spirit that exists at St Joseph’s. This day also reminds me of the importance of family, the importance of friendship and how important it is to work together for the common good. Many of you would often hear me say, that it takes a village to raise a child!

I extend my thanks and appreciation to all our visitors who were able to be with us and to the staff, parents and students for making our visitors welcome.

Thank you to all parents who assisted school staff in setting up and cleaning up the morning tea.

A special mention to our Year 6/7 student leaders who acted as school guides and served morning tea to our guests. I am so proud of them as I’m sure you are as their parents. Well done and thankyou!

It is events such as these that fill me with great pride. It also reminds me of the great privilege I have of being part of such a vibrant and warm community. The staff and I are VERY committed to building a welcoming community where every member feels valued and included. The main purpose of a Catholic School is to build on the mission of the Church. The Mission of the Church, its entire work, is evangelisation – that is, to proclaim and live the Reign of God. This is shaped through Word, Sacrament, Witness and Service.

Our actions, interactions with each other and our WORDS are key to giving witness to our Fatih.

2017 Preparations are underway for 2017. Thank you to all of you who have completed the ‘return to school’

information. This information will be used to determine class structures. As soon as class structures are finalised we

will begin organising students into classes which is a very complex task that requires much planning and thought. Class

teachers have a good knowledge of each student’s academic development and social and emotional needs. Teachers

will take all this knowledge into consideration, together with discussions and parent teacher discussions conducted

throughout the year.

If there are educational or social emotional issues that you feel need to be considered, please inform me in writing,

before the end of this term. This does NOT include teacher requests. Class teachers will have the responsibility of

arranging students into respective classes; however, I will meet regularly with teachers throughout the whole

process. Please note: Any late requests or teacher requests will not be considered.

Camp

This week the 6/7 classes will be going to camp at Mylor Baptist Camp. Students will be provided with

many opportunities for leadership, confidence building and social development. Kathy and I look forward

to being with the students.

Catholic Charities Month

September is Catholic Charities month in the Adelaide Archdiocese, and

during this month we are asked to support the works of the Archdiocese

on behalf of the most needy in our local parishes and schools. This is an

opportunity for us to put our faith into action with good works and a

greater awareness of the needs around us. With this newsletter each

family will receive a brochure outlining some of the works supported by

this Catholic Charities appeal. We have not received enough envelopes so

if your child does not bring one home today please look out for an

envelope soon.

Our Archbishop, Philip Wilson, has a message in the brochure that acknowledges the very important role

our students have in supporting these necessary works within our local Church. It is in this area that

students of all ages can make a huge difference and we look to them with confidence and hope to show us

a way.

The theme of this year’s campaign is ‘me4u’ and there is a website you can access to find out more

information about how we can together support the appeal (me4u.org.au). The brochure also describes

some of the people and places that benefit from our contributions: all of these are local and are deserving

of our support. Some of you will already be familiar with:

Hutt Street, which we support each year,

our local Our Lady of La Vang special school at Flinders Park, (within our parish)

Centacare

The Aboriginal ministry,

The Mercy Hour of welcome, to name a few.

Family Mass

Many thanks to all who were able to attend our Family Mass last Sunday; once again, it was a great

community celebration.

God Bless

REMINDER

PUPIL FREE DAY: FRIDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER DUE TO STAFF INSERVICE

Book Week commenced on Monday 22nd August and is the longest running Children’s festival in Australia. Each year, many schools and public

libraries from all over Australia

spend a week celebrating books

and Australian authors and

illustrators. This week the children were invited to bring a favourite book from home

and we read many of them together. Parents and grandparents were

invited to read to the children and Ms OD’s Yr 3 class read the books they

have made to us.

We have introduced purple and blue fruit and vegetables to our Eat a

Rainbow table and cooked a blueberry and yoghurt cake.

Chelsea and a group of her

friends made bird puppets

and acted out the story of

How the Birds got

their Colours.

“As young children discover the wonders of nature through direct hands-on experiences, they develop a reverence for life that cannot be fostered as profoundly in any other way. Reading about insects in books or watching nature videos is never as compelling as seeing a real butterfly emerge from its chrysalis or tasting the first tomato to ripen on a plant you’ve watered yourself.” Nancy Rosenow : Connecting with the

Outside Classroom.

Ladybugs, bees, caterpillars, birds

butterflies, flowers and vegetables in

our environment have all been a part

of our learning discoveries this week.

NETBALL

U9 Gold 4 vs Nazareth 3 It wasn't a great start from the Gold team as the girls couldn't find their rhythm, missing passes and getting out played by Nazareth. At the three quarter mark we were down 0-3. But in a very exciting turn of events, we switched up the positions and scored 3 very quick goals in the final minutes of the last quarter. Zoi showed great composure to shoot the winning goal of the game under pressure with just seconds to spare! Let's keep working on our skills at practise this Friday. Tonight's game begins at 5:10pm we play North Adelaide.

PS Don't forget TONIGHT 7:30pm Netball Quad Series Match - Aussie Diamonds v's England Roses at Entertainment Centre - please meet out the front 6:45-7pm Coach -Jo

U9 Blue 9 vs North Adelaide 6 The girls played tremendously well together as a team, playing continuously in a more fluent motion. Great passes and intercepting the oppositions passes. Our defence was held strong throughout the game as the oppositions attack were quick and accurate in their shooting. Well played by both teams working up a sweat and awesome goals shot by Mya (4), Lily (3), Amelia (1) & Carla (1) See you all at training this Friday. Next game is at 4:30pm playing against OLQP Shaggies. PS Don't forget 7:30pm Netball Quad Series Match - Aussie Diamonds v's England Roses at Entertainment Centre - please meet out the front 6:45-7pm Coach-Pat

SOCCER U7 Yellow 0 vs Nazareth Yellow 1 What a tough and competitively close game. By far the best game played on both teams, Nazareth def St Jo 1-0. Well done to all who played and giving their best for the team. This Saturday clinic starts at 8.30am playing St Francis at 9am. Coach—Pat
