Lost trekkerlived on fliesA GERMAN backpackerfound stranded on an islandin floodwaters in a failed bidto reach Uluru from ruralQueensland on foot will at-tempt the trek again.

Daniel Dudzisz, 26, wasfound 17 days after he wentmissing while walking the95km from Windorah —about 1200km west of Bris-bane — to Jundah.

He is believed to have sur-vived on a diet of flies andother insects.

The German, who set offon February 17, was foundstranded on an island cre-ated by floodwaters by twomen driving by.

After he got off the island,the pair dropped him back at

the Windorah OutbackShop, where he bought amuch-needed feast.

‘‘A packet of cereal, a two-litre milk, a block of cheese,some frozen party pies and acouple of other things,’’ saidstore owner Diane Geiger.

She said it could havebeen worse for Mr Dudzisz— who can’t swim.

‘‘He’s very lucky that thefloodwater didn’t keep ris-ing, that it’s levelled outwhere it did,’’ she said. ‘‘Inbig flood times, those islandsgo completely underwater.’’

Police Inspector MarkHenderson said the chancesof surviving in the isolatedarea where Mr Dudzisz — aninsulin-dependent diabetic

— got stuck were ‘‘virtuallynon-existent’’.

‘‘He is very, very gaunt; hehas lost a considerableamount of weight and thereis very little doubt he wasnot far off perishing,’’ InspHenderson said. ‘‘He jokedabout never going hungryin the Australian Outbackbecause of the amount offlies you can eat for theirprotein, apparently.’’

Amazingly, Mr Dudzisz in-tends to continue his trek toUluru after a three-day rest.

Insp Henderson said whilelocals were glad Mr Dudziszhad been found alive, his ad-ventures had cost the com-munity time and effort dur-ing an already difficult time.

serious caffeine jitters, a newapp may be able to help youcontrol your coffee habit.

UP Coffee is a free appfrom Jawbone, the makersof a variety of Bluetoothgadgets, including the Jaw-bone UP.

Keeping with that fitnessand health theme, UP Coffeeis an app that tracks your

coffee consumption, corre-lates it with your height,weight, gender and the timeyou want to get to sleep.

Like the UP band, it pro-gressively builds a profile ofyour coffee use.

You can also tie it into anaccount if you’re already anUP band user to check again-st your recorded sleep.

It’ll warn you if that esp-resso is about to send youover the edge, or if that late-night latte is going to haveyou awake at 3am, althoughit’s not automatic; you’ll

have to remember to logeach cup of coffee as youdrink it, presuming you canhold your hands steady longenough to input the details.

Virginia resident LauraDibbs owns a smartphone butsaid the app was ‘‘stupid’’.

‘‘If you don’t know whenyou’ve had too much coffeethen really, you have got noidea about coffee,’’ she said.

‘‘I drink two a day and thatis it.

‘‘Some days I only haveone but I would never havemore than two.’’
