NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2014 Phillip and Vicki Dempsey, Dempsey Pastoral Co, Nundle with their sons Robert and Rory decided to purchase a hay making plant to take advantage of the enhanced timeliness of making hay themselves verses using contractors. With approximately 400 acres of irrigated and dryland Lucerne on creek flats around Nundle, the intention is to produce a good quantity of hay and silage to feed their stock through winter and the dryer period we are experiencing at the moment. A New Holland BR7060 Round Baler with cutters was chosen following investigation of the options available and feedback from a neighbour who has owned and operated a similar New Holland baler for some years. The BR7060 with cutters will allow the Dempsey’s the flexibility of using pre-cut bales in their vertical feedmixer and reduce the mix time required. The baler is also very capable of producing bales suitable for silage. The BR7060 makes a 1.2m (4’) wide bale with a diameter of 0.9m (3’) through to 1.5m (5’) and comes complete with automated greasing/oiling systems and a hydraulic rotor reverser. A new Taarup 9146 Single Rotor Hay Rake was also purchased to suit the Used New Holland 1431 Mower Conditioner which has a 4m cut. The Taarup rake has a 4.6m raking width and has hydraulic lift, fully oscillating wheel and axle undercarriage and with the adjustable windrow skirt varying size/height windrows can be achieved. Another factor in the decision to purchase a full hay plant from Goodwin Kenny/New Holland is the back up and support from Goodwin Kenny’s dedicated Hay technician Merv Leard. Goodwin Kenny has again been successful with the Tender to replace one of the Armidale Dumaresq Council’s Parks and Gardens mowing units. The New Holland G6030 has a 30Hp Diesel engine, 2 pedal Hydrostat drive, 4wd with rear wheel steer. The New Holland G6030 mower is designed as a commercial grade mower with PTO drive to the deck gearbox and hydraulic deck lift. The deck on this unit is a quality German made Wiedenmann outfront mowing deck. Council staff were impressed with the clean deck lines, under deck spindle protection and heavy discharge deflector flap. The simple high lift function which tilts the deck up for blade maintenance is an improvement over previous decks council have used. Tom Small, Werris Creek, has added to his hay plant with the purchase of a new SIP Hayrake. The SIP 360/10 single rotor rake has a working width of 3.6m and is ideal behind Tom’s New Holland H7230 mower conditioner. The SIP 360/10 has an adjustable cam track, fully pivoting undercarriage & manual height adjustment. The SIP rakes have proven to be a very reliable rake with simple maintenance and simple operation over many years that Goodwin Kenny have been selling them. Goodwin Kenny Hay technician Merv Leard set up the rake on farm with Tom, again reinforcing our commitment to not only selling good quality equipment but setting it up to suit each individual operation. Simon McDonald, Moore Creek had been researching the purchase of a new tractor for some months, before deciding on the purchase of a New Holland TD95D Plus with Challenge front end loader and 4in1 bucket. The TD95D Plus is the last of the run out model and as such was attractively priced. Simon is familiar with the TD series of tractors as his father and uncles have a similar tractor at their Weabonga property which has given good service over a number of years. The New Holland TD95D Plus has 98 engine HP, 4wd with 12 Forward and 12 Reverse gears as well as an additional 8 Forward gears in the Creeper box. The new tractor will be used for general farm work including fencing, ploughing, seeding and haymaking. The new Challenge Implements loader has been equipped with Euro hitch to match the loader on the other tractor so that all the implements are able to be interchanged easily between the tractors. A New Silvan SX500 spreader was also purchased to go up to the Weabonga farm for the spreading of pasture seed and fertilizer. Pictured with the New Holland BR7060 Baler is Phillip & Rory Dempsey. Rob & Pam Crosby – Kansas Livestock - Winton Requirement - Cultivation of 10 year old Lucerne pastures ready for re-sowing. Additional Criteria - Horse paddocks from 30 acres down to 1 acre in size

Narrow Laneways 10’ gates Short run lengths.

Solution - Simba X-Press 3.0m by Great Plains. Reason - Compact size – easy manoeuvrability in lanes and through gates.

Set up allows operation at slower speeds compared to competitor machines. Up and back cultivation can be done working across the paddock without leaving ridges or furrows. Crumble roller leaves a finish less prone to wind blowing dust around.

Parallel disc harrows – Great Plains “Simba X-Press” Two Parallel Rows of Discs – Each 500mm disc is mounted individually, the discs rotational speed is far greater than more conventional discs. Pro-Active spring mounted disc units with a trip height of 120mm give improved protection against stone damage and improved contour following at speed. Each disc can move independently of the others, at working speed the discs vibrate and shake through the ground. Because of the angle and vibration, discs stay clean and there is no need for scrapers. Chopping and mixing is enhanced and a finer seedbed is achieved. Easy Disc Angle Adjustment. The angle of each row of Discs is fully adjustable between 0° and 25° enabling you to vary how aggressively the soil is worked and ensure good penetration. This also allows you to achieve good cultivation at lower speeds than some other machines on the market. Select an acute angle for maximum mixing of stubble in one pass and a shallower angle to chop down ploughing when required. Depth is controlled by the Cage Roller on the rear, the weight of the machine helps the roller to break down clumps – re-consolidate the soil and reduce wind and water loss. WHY a Simba X-Press Compact length – ideal for small or large paddocks. Good results at slow and fast speeds by adjusting gang angles. Quality frame and undercarriage – built in the UK. Reduced costs of cultivation and compaction by reducing trips across the paddock. Repairs and maintenance is easier – no need to remove big gang units from under the frame. Machines from 3m to 4.0m linkage or trailed, rigid and folding.

Call in to discuss your cultivation requirements with Glenn or Peter at Gunnedah or Tony at Tamworth.

INTRODUCING THE ALL NEW ECO-POWER PLATINUM

PREMIXED ENGINE COOLANT

Eco-Power Platinum Premixed Engine Coolant is an advanced fully formulated organic, high performance diesel and petrol engine coolant. It is a Propylene Glycol based coolant that features an advanced additive package to comply with the specifications of late model engine manufactures. It contains no nitrites, amines, phosphates or silicates (NAPS).

So how does that benefit me?

Easier Maintenance: Testing the coolant is a breeze with the new test strips, no more hassles trying to work out how much additive is needed.

Easier Servicing: Eco-Power Platinum only requires an additive dose once every 6,000 hours and requires the use of non chemical filters. Simply add one litre of additive to every 60 litres of engine coolant every 6,000 hours.

Longer Service Life: Eco-Power Platinum has a service life of 6 years or 20,000 hours or 1,500,000 kms when properly maintained.

….Susan Goodwin….Susan Goodwin….Susan Goodwin….Susan Goodwin

Just to keep you up to date: Shane Bridges joined the Spare Parts department at Tamworth in early October and over the last couple of months would have assisted a few familiar faces who were looking for parts. Shane comes to us with many years experience in the Agricultural Machinery industry having held prior positions in Spare Parts and Sales with a number of local and interstate companies. While David Hartmann and Peter Mackay had a few days off over the Christmas period I was assisting Shane in Spares and it was interesting to see the reaction from some customers at the counter when Shane was serving them. There were some comments of surprise to see him at Goodwin Kenny after his long association with Case, all were positive about his ability to assist them and many agree with me - I think he looks great in the Blue and Gold !!

I hope you all had a great Christmas. I was fortunate this year to have my daughter Gina at home visiting from Quambone, with her fiancé, Kodey Sinclair, and was also pleased to have my brother Geoff Lillyman, his partner Barb, their daughters - Zoe & Emma visit from Dorrigo, along with my mum - Joy from Moree, all here for the weekend before Christmas. To me this is what Christmas is all about—having family and friends share a meal, some conversation & laughs & a few cool drinks.

We did exchange a few gifts also - I gave my nieces a Sewing Machine and Gina gave them their first sewing lesson. I think they were a bit daunted by the prospect of using the machine, but under Gina’s guidance were soon sewing patterns and seams, so I hope this is a gift that will give them a lot of pleasure. I was lucky enough to learn to sew with my Grandmother on a Singer Treadle machine when I was very young and have loved sewing ever since. The other photo is of one of my gifts, a Horseshoe Pear Sculpture made for me by Kodey (he is in the “Good Books” with his future mother-in-law at present) and my dog “Bella”. The sculpture, made from old horseshoes, looks great and now I think I would like a couple of smaller ones….so if you have any old horseshoes lying around that you don’t have any use for I would be very grateful for them ...just drop them in. In 2014 we look forward to continuing to support your efforts in Agriculture with Parts, Service & Machine Sales and wish you all the best for the coming year.

JOKE OF THE MONTH

An Afghanistan diplomat visiting the US for the first time was being wined and dined by the State Department.

The diplomat was not used to the salt in American foods (French fries, cheeses, salami, anchovies, etc.) and was constantly sending his manservant Abdul to fetch him a glass of water.

Time and again, Abdul would scamper off and return with a glass of water, but then came the time when he returned empty handed. "Abdul, you son of an ugly camel, where is my water?" demanded the diplomat.

"A thousand pardons, O Illustrious One," stammered the wretched Abdul.

"But a man is sitting on the well!"
