NEWSLETTER Marangaroo Primary School Giralt Road Marangaroo WA 6064

Dear Parents/Carers and Community Members
Thank you for taking the time to read the last newsletter for the term. At the moment, this is the main way our school keeps you up to date. We are aware that our communication needs to be reviewed in the future, with the focus being on streamlining how each class and the school communicates within our community.
Student reports went home yesterday. Please use the semester one report to sit down and praise your child on their areas of strength. Allow your child to identify one or two areas that they would like to improve on next semester. I encourage you to schedule a meeting with your classroom teacher should you require further clarification about your child’s report.
If you would like a copy of the learning area reports for each year group, please contact the front office. The learning area report depicts the amount of grades that were given in each learning area.
Kids Who Care
Thank you to Mrs Campbell and Mrs Bija, who are leading a great new initiative. Kids who Care is a playground peer mentoring program initially involving our student leaders. They will be training interested year 5/6 students early next term. Kids who Care students must complete training modules and on conclusion are recognised with a badge and hi-vis vest for use in the playground. I look forward to seeing this progress into a rewarding initiative that supports our students in the playground even further.
Term Planner
This can be found on the back page of today’s newsletter. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive and organised document that parents can rely on to keep up to date with events and other important details. While we aim to minimise changes, if they do occur, an updated term planner will be uploaded on the school website and parents informed via Skoolbag or Facebook.
Term 3 Open Night
Please plan ahead and make yourself and your family members available for the Term 3 Open Night on Wednesday 14 August from 5.30 to 6.30pm. This is a great opportunity to visit your child’s classroom and see some of their progress this year. Specialist class-rooms will also be open for viewing.
Student Uniform
It is really encouraging to see so many students wearing the correct school uniform. In the winter months especially, there can be a decline in students wearing the correct school jacket. Students wearing the school jacket instils pride with every student and allows them to fit in with the rest of their peers. Imagine an Eagles player running out onto the oval each game with a Dockers uniform on…doesn’t work! Please check the P&C information in this newsletter to see uniform shop opening times. Alternatively, please get an order form from the front office. There are second hand jackets available for $2. Thank you in advance.
Stay safe everyone on our mid-year break. A reminder that Monday 22 July is a professional learning day for staff. Students return to school on TUESDAY 23 July. See you all then.

The P&C Needs YOU!
We are always looking for members to join our P&C. Being part of the P&C can be extremely rewarding – making friendships, being part of the school, helping the students and families and contributing toward the community!
Joining us means attending meetings when you can, volunteering when available and lending your voice to make informed decisions about how the P&C contributes funds to the school. We have meetings twice a term on Monday evenings. The next meeting is Monday 5 August at 7pm in the staff room.
Vacant Position
The P&C is looking for someone to take on the role of secretary. This person is responsible for prepar-ing the agendas and minutes of meetings, and general record keeping. No experience is necessary as full training will be provided. This role is absolutely vital to the P&C and we will not be able to continue if it is not filled soon.
If you think you might be a good candidate please email [email protected] for more information or contact Eric Jones on 0411 720 880 or Danica Charlton on 0452 581 605
The P&C have been working hard this year. So far. some of the projects that we have contributed funding towards are the Edu-dance program, the parent open night where we supplied the refreshments and entertainment for the evening and supporting the canteen. We have also run the election day BBQ, Mother’s Day stall and free dress day. Our upcoming events for term 3 will include faction carnival and Father’s Day stalls. We are looking to put the funds raised towards a new PA system.
Canteen
What a first half of the year! We would like to express our thanks to Woolworths Kingsway for their continued support of the canteen through weekly donations. A big thank you to everyone who has supported the canteen this year by placing orders and participating in our fundraising. Your contribution has helped to ensure the canteen has stayed open and available for the school community to access. We aren’t out of the woods yet.
Help us stay open
The canteen will close if we are not able to make enough sales to stay financially viable. The P&C would like to make sure the canteen stays open and we need your support to do this.
The best way for you to help the canteen is to order your recess and/or lunch, support the special days that occur each term or take advantage of the new birthday cupcake ordering system. For more information or to obtain a current canteen menu visit the canteen or the front office.
We have a new Phone Number
As part of the transition to making the canteen cost effective and more viable, we are changing our
phone number. The new number is 0475 522 379 and will be used for the canteen from term 3
onwards. This number will receive calls only, no text message orders will be accepted.
Express Orders
Save time with the canteen’s express order option. Simply put your order and correct money in a zip lock bag or envelope with your child’s name and class, drop it to the canteen and Lynda will take care of it all for you. Easy!
Last Week of Term
For the final week of term, the canteen is offering toasted Baked Bean or Spaghetti Jaffles for $4 and hot milo at recess for $1. Available Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. No pre-order necessary.

Uniform Shop
We will have a new uniform coordinator for term 3. The P&C would like to
thank Simon Ortmueller for co-ordinating the uniform shop during terms 1 and 2.
Change of open days
Beginning term 3 our new open days will be Wednesdays on even weeks of term. We are open from 8.15 – 8.45am for you to visit and try out sizing. Refer to the term planner for confirmation of open days. If you need uniforms but can’t make it to the shop when it’s open, you can fill in an order form and return it to the P&C letterbox in the front office. Please enclose the correct money and the order will be filled and delivered to your child’s class at the next available opportunity.
Faction shirts
Term 3 is faction carnival term! Just a reminder that faction coloured t-shirts are available for purchase for $6 each. Purchasing a faction shirt through the uniform shop not only supports the P&C but shows your pride for your faction.
Second hand and Clearance items
The uniform shop has second hand items available for $2 each, all are sold “as is” and no refund or exchange is possible. The uniform shop currently has some clearance jackets and pants from $5 each. To check availability of sizes and items please visit the uniform shop and grab a bargain.
School Banking
Banking days are changing
Starting Term 3 2019 school banking will now be every Tuesday morning from 8.15am-8.45am. This change will ensure that all kindy students have the opportunity to bank every week instead of just the alternate Wednesdays as previously.
School Banking – Volunteer needed
To keep the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program running we need your help. Our current coordinator will be leaving the school at the end of this year as her daughter will be graduating. We are looking for someone to take over this role. If you are interested in taking on this role please don’t hesitate to contact Melanie Bailey on 0422 517 511 or come along to one of the banking days for a chat.

Dear Parents/Carers and Community Members
Our Semester 1 Attendance Data has revealed that over 980 student absences had no valid reason provided for their absence with 1800 absences having a reason provided.
For a small school that is a huge amount of absences to consider. We are looking at each student in our school having at least 4 absences per Semester with no reason provided.
For our Second Semester we’re focussing on Student Achievement through Punctuality and Attendance.
Our request is straight forward, we would like our students to be at school and on time. Our teachers are working hard to move our students along the learning continuum. We seek our school community’s support to make this happen.
V Malanczak
Deputy Principal
Farewell and Good Luck
We wish Reece and Eric Firth all the best in their move to their local school, Ellen Stirling, in term 3. We look forward to hearing the news from your new school.
Welcome
In term 3 we will welcome a new student to our school, in year 3, Abby George. Abby has visited our school over the past few weeks as part of her transition to Marangaroo PS. We look forward to welcoming Abby.
Kids who Care
Our student councillors will complete Module 3 of ‘Kids who Care’ this Friday. They received their ‘Autism Awareness’ badges at last Friday’s assembly and have done a wonderful job getting to know the likes and interests of our students with ASD.
Their plan is to display their wonderful work on the pin up board outside the
library. Stay tuned for more information on ‘Kids who Care’ next term as our
student councillors look to train volunteers from year 5 and year 6 to join ‘Kids
who Care’ and support all of our students in the playground.

Ms Bonsey’s Bilbies
In class we had discussed how Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander people use natural materials such as ochre and process it through grinding and binding with water to create paint. We then (using mortar and pestles) ground up mostly natural materials (spices, herbs, some clay, and colourful chalk) to create our own paintings of Australian flora and fauna.
