Nandan Exim set to be biggest Indian denim producerAhmedabad and India-based Chiripal Group company – Nandan Exim Ltd is on its way to becoming the biggest denim fabric producer in India in 2015 by which time it hopes to reach 112 million meters per annum, if the current market leader, Arvind Ltd does not add new capacity in the interim.

“Nandan is investing Rs 1200 crores in the expansion and we are in the process of adding new capacities to existing capacity of 70 million meters per annum and hope to complete installation of new capacity of 42 million meters by March 2015”, Mr Vishal Chiripal – Director of Chiripal Group informs fibre2fashion.

“This in turn makes Nandan Exim the sixth or seventh largest global producer of denim in the world, says Mr Sandeep Agarwal”, a global denim tracker and CEO of denimandjeans.com."Nandan Exim makes more than 2000 different Source: www.fibre2fashion.com

Will Europe Keep Its High Tariff on U.S. Womens Jeans? The European Union slapped a steep 38 percent tariff on U.S. made women’s jeans last year, and the same is set to expire on April 30, but no one is sure whether the tariff will disappear or be extended for another year.

Industry insiders are placing their bets that the tariff stays in place for another year, but there is a slim chance the tariff—which is more than three times of what it was in 2012 is reduced or shifted to another item.

“The rumor is the tariff will continue after May 1,” said Nate Herman, vice president of international trade at the American Apparel & Footwear Association, a trade group in Arlington, Va. “They seem to like this item for tariffs.”

The AAFA has been pushing U.S. and European trade officials to negotiate a reduction in the tariff, which was at 12 percent before being raised on May 1, 2013,

or dropping it altogether. “I don’t think they will announce a decision before the middle of next month on this tariff,” said Steve Lamar, the AAFA’s executive vice president.

On top of the current tariff war, the two reg ions, i ron ica l ly, are

negotiating a free-trade agreement that would make the area the largest

f ree- t rade zone in the wor ld , encompassing as many as 800 million

residents.

The EU and the United States just wrapped up their fourth round of negotiations in Brussels, Belgium, for the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or T-TIP. The five-day meeting, March 10–14, saw discussions on trade in services, public procurement, rules of origin, technical barriers to trade, agriculture, and customs and trade facilitation.

types of denim fabric varieties ranging between 6 to 14 ounces", claims Mr Chiripal.

However, Mr Chiripal is not overtly worried of the current glut in the Indian denim market, although currently it sells 95% of its production in the

domestic market. He says, “We have tied up with various international brands to ensure that our new capacity is fully utilized.”“In the next few years, we hope to reduce reliance on the domestic market and concentrate more on the export markets. This in turn will take our global market share to 30-35%

with the rest accounted for by the Indian market”, he adds.

He credits the Gujarat state government for its forward looking Textile Policy which has encouraged them to add this new denim capacity.

Arvind acquires 49% stake in Calvin Klein

Arvind Ltd., has finalised a deal for buying out 49% stake jointly held by the Murjani Group and the US-based private equity fund Matrix Partners in

Calvin Klein India for approximately Rs 100 crore, revealed three persons close to the transaction.

The deal will help the denim major widen its ties with its existing joint venture partner American clothing giant Phillips-Van Heusen Corp for Tommy Hilfiger brand. Phillips-Van Heusen Corp also owns Calvin Klein worldwide.

The negotiations, that had started last year, culminated in a transaction five days ago and a formal announcement is expected soon, according to sources. Ambit Corporate Finance was the sole advisor to the deal. Spokesperson for Arvind declined to comment, and the head of Murjani Group Vijay Murjani and Matrix Partners also did not respond to telephone calls and text messages.

While the Murjani Group holds 25% in the joint venture, Matrix holds the remaining 24%. The deal also signals Arvind Group's founder Sanjay Lalbhai's ambition to grow in the mid-premium segment of the apparel market by forging alliances with marque overseas brands.

It all started in 2003 when Arvind struck a joint venture with Murjani Group to sell Tommy Hilfiger in India. Though the worldwide ownership of Tommy Hilfiger moved to Phillips-Van Heusen, Arvind continued to be the Indian partner. Two years ago, Arvind acquired the business operat ions of Bri t ish fashion retai ler Debenhams, Next and American lifestyle brand Nautica in India from Ramesh Tainwala-led

Planet Retail.

Though the move was an attempt to boost market share in kidswear, womenswear and sportsware segments, the economic downturn triggered a sharp fall in customer purchases, leaving some retail brands struggling. Experts feel that these alliances allowed Arvind to consolidate brands under a single umbrella and offer a one-stop platform for aspirational customers.

"These joint ventures not only bring marque brands under a single platform, but also help Arvind to negotiate better for retail space. Instead of negotiating for a single brand, the company can now look at having more brands in a retail mall by paying lesser rents," said Harminder Sahani, founder and managing director, Wazir Advisors, a consultancy firm for retail and lifestyle companies.

Despite the fallout of recession, the company's brands business grew by 25% in the last nine month period to Rs 1,412 crore. The company's profit before tax and interest from brands business grew by 17% to Rs 34.7 crore in the last nine months. The company's brands include Excalibur, Flying Machine, Colt and Newport. In addition to this, it owns the right to market brands such as Polo, Arrow, Cherokee, Next, Club America and Megamart. The premium end of the apparel market has been growing at a rapid 16-18% as aspirational customers are looking to buy better brands. "Customers now want to try out different things," Sahani added. In 2011, Murjani had struck a 49:51 JV with Warnaco which owned the rights for Calvin Klein globally. PVH Corp snapped up Warnaco in the largest deal in the clothing industry last year.

About 95% of garment finishing processes using laser and ecological techniques in the Mexican market have been developed by the Spanish company Jeanologia.

Jeanlogia is the world leader in the development of sustainable technologies for garments finishing and has been present for over 10 years in Mexico, where it has distributed more than 100 laser machines, producing over 1.2 million jeans per month.

During Exintex Textile Exhibition, being held at Puebla (Mexico) from 11th to 14th March, Jeanologia will be showcasing Flexi HS laser technology which reproduces jeans wear avoiding the use of harmful techniques for operators’ health while allowing saves of energy, water, chemicals and time in the process of the garment finishing.

Perfect for working in Jeans, shorts, shirts, jackets and accessories, fits the needs of each manufacturer or designer. It incorporates the latest electronic technology to increase the speed of marking, while the power consumption is reduced in each garment.

Jeanologia, which was recently awarded with the WGSN Global Fashion Award for the best sustainable design team in the world, develops besides this one, other sustainable technologies for garments finishing.

Pakistans highest denim exporter award bagged by KassimPakistan based Kassim Denim has been awarded the ‘H ighes t Den im Exporter of the Year’ from t h e G o v e r n m e n t o f Pakistan. Additionally Arsal Kassim, the Creative

Director has also been awarded ‘KCCI Businessman of the year Gold Medal Award’.

Pakistan is ceaselessly ramping up its status as a prominent centre for denim production. Over the past 22 years, Kassim too has grown in stature to now become Pakistan's leading denim fabric manufacturer and exporter.

“It’s a proud moment for Kassim Denim to be acknowledged by the Government of Pakistan as the highest denim exporter and for me to be awarded the KCCI Businessman of the year Gold Medal’, an elated Arsal Kassim said.

He adds, “I share this award with all those who have honestly and faithfully worked with us to enable us to bag these coveted awards”.

Kassim Denim’s métier is its passion to produce the best denim fabric, which has been made possible by its technical staff and ongoing research efforts of its R&D team.

Kassim Denim has also been very mindful and

conscious of the environmental impacts of industrialization, and takes all possible steps to be sustainable and eco-friendly.

Kassim is extremely conscious of reducing its carbon footprint, hence evaluates the carbon foot print of the fiber/yarn used by the company.

For ease of analysis, Kassim categorizes the fibers as:

a) Natural (from plants, animals and less commonly, minerals) and for these, it focuses directly at the farm stage by monitoring field preparation, planting and field operations, harvesting and yields.

b) Synthetic (man-made) with the crucial knowledge that they are produced fossil fuels, which consume high amounts of energy. Kassim keeps close tabs on the energy and chemicals used to weave those yarns into fabric.

Kassim produces a diverse range of fabrics ranging from 6oz to 14oz in mostly ring yarns ranging between stretch and rigid fabrics, power stretches and specialty blends.

Kassim is one of the pioneers of organic denim in Pakistan. Fabric finishing includes a wide range of over dyed and coated denims

Guess Inc.'s Philanthropic Marketing PushGuess Inc. is parlaying its denim heritage into an ambitious campaign to prevent sexual violence. The campaign was launched on 17 March and will continue till Denim Day on April 23, when activists plan to wear jeans to raise awareness about sexual assault.

The LA based company is integrating its three retail brands — Guess, G by Guess and Guess Factory — into a singular marketing initiative for the first time. Over 400 stores in the U.S. and Canada are unveiling window displays, signs and denim pins worn by staff with messages like “my jeans protest violence.”

“Because the message is so rooted in denim, so true to our heritage, when we heard about Denim Day it felt impossible for us not to participate in a bigger way,” said Amber Tarshis, Guess’ senior vice president of North American marketing.

Besides tapping into its customer e-mail list and social media accounts to spread the word, Guess will also be running print ads in the May books of Vanity Fair, Teen Vogue and Lucky magazine. Public service announcements also w i l l h i t t h e I n t e r n e t , t h r o u g h WhoWhatWear.com, Upworthy.com, V Magazine’s Web site, a Teen Vogue-sponsored newsletter and an e-mail blast from Lucky.

This is the largest philanthropic marketing effort in Guess’ 33-year history. Tarshis said it is pivotal today for fashion brands to be both progressive and charitable. “Our customer wants to make a difference and wants to get involved,” she said. “They’re looking at companies to be more phi lanthropic and more social ly and environmentally responsible. The consumer demand and the corporate interest for making a difference are coming together like never before.”

Denim Day originated in 1997 after an Italian

court overturned a rape conviction because the judges felt that, since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans and given consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit, sponsors Denim Day in the U.S. As part of the promotion, the Guess Foundation is contributing $100,000 to Peace Over Violence to help fund its crisis hotline, teen dating programs and other activities.

Tarshis said the company also is involving its workforce of 9,200 people and carrying the message north of the border to Canada, where Peace Over Violence has never sponsored Denim Day. It’s also hosting Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Police Chief Charlie Beck and musician Aloe Blacc to a press conference at its downtown L.A. headquarters on Denim Day. “That’s the real value: the reach,” she said.
